And by "true", I do not mean "fact". I mean it was as it says in the book, but the book being taken as fact has shed a lot of blood, ruined a bunch of lives, and kept absolutist monarchs in power by use of fear throughout history.
So, the Bible is merely literature... and reading what God did in the OT, those grisly stories makes God sound a lot worse than Hitler.

Look in the OT and you'll find tones of crap, look in the NT and you'll find stuff like "men have authority over women" or "slaves must obey" and so on. Jesus himself said he didn't change anything from the bible and that not a single verse of the bible would stop having a meaning. That means slavery should still be ok.

1. This "slavery" was much closer to what one would call "servant"; they were not treated with such racism and cruelty like American slavery.
2. God didn't mean that if a man told women to jump in the fire, she should do it. If I remember, God commanded men to protect and love women, and if women followed a man that followed such decree, I don't think he would force her to do anything that will threaten her independence.
And where the heck in the bible does it justify child abuse?

But if they survive a day or 2 and then die then it's ok because it was property anyways? Wow, sounds lovely. Being a slave means you can't leave and live your life like you want.
