I have a iPod touch I am getting used to typing fast on it and I can't wait till I get iPad this April I will like it more cause the screen is way bigger to type on.
This is pretty pointless. He's been typing on an external keyboard for years, and the iPad for a day. Typing on the virtual keyboard takes practice but once you get it down it is just as fast on an external. I've had this iPad for a few weeks, type 120wpm on an external and 95 on the virtual. But I've been typing on externals since elementary school, I suspect I'll get up to 120 on the virtual after more practice. Auto corrections DO make things go faster btw.
however, the iPad has the best touch screen, including all the stuff like multigesting or just touching the display...you won't find anything better nowadays ;)
It was unfair, because when he typed on the notebook, he heard that text in the first time, and when he typed on the ipad, he typed the same text... in the second time... Nevertheless the ipad lost the battle...
I think nobody can type with 10 fingers on ipad, becauese its virtual keyboard is too small. This reduces the typing speed dramatically for those who CAN type...
I guess the Ipad is the ultimate techno version of Marmite. Personally, I love the Ipad ! But I totally understand why people might not like the Ipad, everyone has a unique use of the Ipad. So, the Ipad doesen't suit everyones needs. It's not that the Ipad is bad, it's just the way we use it. ;)
You start the standard keyboard test @ :32 and end it at 1:12, so clearly no scaling, but the iPad test starts at 1:29 and ends at 2:38. Clear the stopwatch next time.

The first time i ever used the texting on iphone i immediately wrote it off as un-useable. Now, i find it the EASIEST way of texting on a mobile phone (made especially easy with the inclusion of landscape typing.)
So who knows, with a month or two practice, maybe someone could actually type faster with a touch screen?

THE most stupid test ever. No way u can take that seriously. First of all, it's the same text for both times. You would certainly assume he had memorized some of the words. I perfer the real thing to touch typing. I've tried typing a 8 page essay on the iPad and let me tell you, its beyond annoying. It took me four times longer than it normally would on labtop. And I don't even want to imagine using it to take down notes during a lecture. It would be faster and much simpler for me to just write down the notesinstead. But typing aside, the iPad itself is is pretty useful, maybe once they come out with one that can connect to a portable keyboard, I'll buy one.

The Apple iPad is easy to type on and you get used to it extremely fast. In landscape mode, its extremeley easy to type like a normal keyboard, unfortunately, when i type using all fingers, the backspace button seems to small and i always accidentaly press the "p" instead of backspace

That is the #1 test for me. All the entertainment stuff is great, but I need to actually be able to create and edit new words and ideas. Why hasn't any biz or cell co been able to merge text-to-speech recognition? Or a better auto complete, perhaps categorized based on part of speech, sentence structure, the word or phrase preceding, the sentences preceding, the type of writing, the # of paragraph, and a mil more factors? Treat predictive typing like Google treats SEO SERP results. MS + Google!
Newer phones that will be coming out within the next year have a new form of auto correct \ t9. apparently you keep your finger on the screen and just move from key to key and apparently it fixes it for you. Sorry to be so vague i dont know all the details but it is comin.

I typed that exact paragraph is 32 seconds my first try, 22 seconds with a bluetooth keyboard, and I am a 6 finger typer. So I would not say this test id proper. He is not used to a small keyboard, I am.

as a designer. I would only be interested in a tablet type device if it had a stylus with pressure sensitivity... working with programs like the Adobe suite. The ipad sadly does none of this.
Wait, if he started typing on the Ipad at minute 1:30 and finished at minute 2:38 isn't that 1 minute and 8 seconds? not 1 minute and 48 seconds like they said, so there's just a difference of 29.1 seconds between the laptop and the Ipad.

The IPad looks 'nifty' and all...but it just seems practically useless and really unneeded if you have something like a laptop or a another portable Apple product on hand. At best the IPad is great because its lightweight and generally doesn't seem to take that much space if you had the need to carry it around.
But other than that, the need to look 'trendy', and general 'Tech-geek' interest...it seems like a waste of a decent bit of technology...
Ah, you're right now that I think about it. There are laptops that are about the same size and thickness as the IPad. Well, then that one less point in favor of the IPad. Now the only thing they have left for them is the fact that it makes you look trendy and pets your inner geek....

my 8 year old can type faster than this guy. its technology for the new generation. theyll grow up with this stuff, with less and less keyboards, and they wont complain like most adults do about the touchscreen keyboard

That is the #1 test for me. All the entertainment stuff is great, but I need to actually be able to create and edit new words and ideas. Why hasn't any biz or cell co been able to merge text-to-speech recognition? Or a better auto complete, perhaps categorized based on part of speech, sentence structure, the word or phrase preceding, the sentences preceding, the type of writing, the # of paragraph, and a mil more factors? Treat predictive typing like Google treats SEO SERP results. MS + Google!

Newer phones that will be coming out within the next year have a new form of auto correct \ t9. apparently you keep your finger on the screen and just move from key to key and apparently it fixes it for you. Sorry to be so vague i dont know all the details but it is comin.

I typed that exact paragraph is 32 seconds my first try, 22 seconds with a bluetooth keyboard, and I am a 6 finger typer. So I would not say this test id proper. He is not used to a small keyboard, I am.

The only complaint I would have for the iPad's keyboard (basing it off my experience with my iPhone) would be that it is difficult to type when you have long nails.

What a flawed 'test'. No control variable. iPad has upperhand because it's going last and uses the same phrase already exposed to the experimenter.

How about you guys do another test after he has been typing on the thing for a month... a true comparison is if you just started typing on a keyboard like his first time using a keyboard when he was a kid vs a virtual keyboard

as a designer. I would only be interested in a tablet type device if it had a stylus with pressure sensitivity... working with programs like the Adobe suite. The ipad sadly does none of this.

Wait, if he started typing on the Ipad at minute 1:30 and finished at minute 2:38 isn't that 1 minute and 8 seconds? not 1 minute and 48 seconds like they said, so there's just a difference of 29.1 seconds between the laptop and the Ipad.

The IPad looks 'nifty' and all...but it just seems practically useless and really unneeded if you have something like a laptop or a another portable Apple product on hand. At best the IPad is great because its lightweight and generally doesn't seem to take that much space if you had the need to carry it around.
But other than that, the need to look 'trendy', and general 'Tech-geek' interest...it seems like a waste of a decent bit of technology...

Ah, you're right now that I think about it. There are laptops that are about the same size and thickness as the IPad. Well, then that one less point in favor of the IPad. Now the only thing they have left for them is the fact that it makes you look trendy and pets your inner geek....
