why does Greg keep that Purple (hair tie?) on his guitar by the 1st fret. Im guessing for damping to added to cleanliness, but does GREG HOWE really need that? Anybody know of any other reason?

Exactly right-for the damping effect, especially when he's tapping. Guthrie Govan uses the same thing.
