played this at SU Honors band last year and am playing it in youth orchestra this year... go figure I have the same conductor for it too... awesome piece with awesome memories, though!
You don't die if once a year people clap during this march. I understand, it's a brilliant march and you'd like to concentrate on that but seriously it's not that big of a deal.
This is a pretty cool song, but playing it is quite boring. Horns have up beats, cellos and bass have quarters, and the violas have eighth notes. Its only fun if youre a flute or 1st violin.
There is a great rendition of this fine march by Blasorchester Neuhof. The excellent trumpet part at about 1:20 and again at about 1:41 can be clearly heard and it adds a great deal to the march. Find it on YouTube.
@leosvijacka The only anthem of sorts that the EU could use is a more recent song by an orchestra called '3 Doors Down'. And the choral movement goes along the lines of, ' I'm a Loser.'
@leosvijacka Can be, and I agree. But in many parts of Europe, especially east parts of EU (Hungary Slovakia...) it can remind all times of Austria-Hungary with all negative connotations.
Another very fine march is "Marsz Rzeczpospolita" no, I can't pronounce it either...it's a Polish march and one I just stumbled across during one of my journeys through YouTube. I'm glad to see others are aboard regarding the clapping.
I'm thankful for every time I can listen to this fine march without the distraction and obfuscation of a bunch of clods in the audience clapping along. .....tradition be damned.
@SpeedyNeutrino43 I agree completely. Still, I would not define the audience participation as "a bunch of clods". Despite the tradition, I am always thrilled by the involvement of young and old alike. I last enjoyed Radetzky March in Trondhiem, Norway under Leonid Grinn. What great fun. Enjoy those moments if you can. In the modern era, they are so fleeting and rare. After all, the joy of the march is to inspire action, is it not?
I've traveled throughout Europe back in the 80s and was lucky enough to attend a few concerts, some of which featured this fine march. Some clapped, some didn't. When I was in the audience along with clappers I didn't say one word about it even though I was irritated. Believe it or not the best rendition of the "Radetzky March" I heard was in Bombay, India. Nobody clapped. In any case I do recognize your point.
Yeah, I mean really - you are not supposed to enjoy yourself. Shut up, sit down and act... English. Heaven forbid people actually interact with their music.
@SpeedyNeutrino43 I agree, but I wouldn't call the clappers "clods". They are people taking delight in music. If you heard this march being used AS a march, you'd also have to endure sound of the stomping of shoes or boots on a street or parade ground, yet soldiers marching to it would never reduce the march to an auditory experience only. By marching (and clapping) we celebrate this music, and all that it inspires.
my school is playing this for competition and it is really hard!! i love it :D

Clapping should be banned during a performance unless requested by the conductor. Lol.
