Hi, I was wondering if you know why exactly there is a distinction made between 'motor' tics and 'phonic' tics, resulting in four different types of tic disorder.
A 'phonic' tic, after all, is a motor action of the chest muscles and vocal chords.
Wouldn't it make more sense to distinct between 'motor' tics and 'thought' tics (compulsions)?
So my compulsions are autistic compulsions.. I already knew that because I am autistic, but your definition was very recognizable for me and your video was very informative.
my goodness. you've made an excellent and most helpful contribution here. thank you so much for putting this together. really appreciate this! i work as a child / adolescent psychiatrist and would love to show these to a couple of my patients...if you don't mind?
is there a relation between tourettes and stuttering? It was interesting as well hearing you also bring up autism and the differences between tourettes
your video is very good, and am learning a lot about the brain from this, I am very
dyslexic and am left handed. many dyslexics are lefties and each persons condition varies and know it is the same with tourettes, it is interesting how vast the brain is as well as the differences between each persons condition. is this chemical or electrical?
When I feel I need to even up I also relate that to sensory overload and noticing how things feel more. I want to even up after being touched on one side. I respond to the fact that I feel different on one part of my body than the other
Ex: My right arm is touched and I feel wrong & want to feel the same way on the other arm. I want to be feel the same on the left and I want it to be cause by the same person or thing that touched the right.
I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I never really understood why my face twitched.... I would always just say there nervous twitches if anyone asked... Really affected me during my life.
My tics include rolling my eyes and moving my eyebrows, i used to make a noises and uncontrollably nod when i was younger, so im thankfull they have stopped.
So does this mean i may have tourettes?... It seems the older i get, the longer the list gets for my mental problems =(
My girlfriend has what I think is a cumpulsion disorder! I didn't know what it was and she's never been diagnosed, but I think (based on your explination) that's probobly what she has. Example: when she gets out of her car, she locks it, unlocks it, locks in...and does this exactly 5 times--counting out loud every tme! She does something simular when standing from a chair. She stands up, moves the chair forward then back ward, forwardcounting to 3 every time. What do you think?
Thanks much for the explanation. You're well spoken, and your accent is a joy. It's a rather interesting insight into behaviors of people with more and less obvious tics and compulsions.
Thank you this did help. It actually still makes me question whether i get tics or compulsions still. I find I have either a very annoying habit or a tic or a compulsion i dunno. i feel a sudden urge to blink. but not normal blinking more like a squint and if i dont do it it feels like theres loads of pressure around my eyes....if that makes sense? tic or compulsion?
ur definitions r a bit confusin but i think i get it - so, a tic (response 2 involuntary sensation) is lyk the kind of reflex that nevr goes 2 the brain, rather it jumps 2 n from ur spine instantly. but compulsions (response 2 thots) r lyk the kind of reflex that actually goes thru ur brain, so u actually think bout it.
what about crackin my joints? i needa stop the pinching. im pretty bad, n its so automatic, i barely think bout it. i could hold back if i concentrate n not let my gaurd down.
Would you please make a video about purely obsessional OCD? Also, can any compulsions be a response to a feeling? For instance, when you seek balance by evening up the tension on both sides of the DVD in your "Visual Representation of Evening Up...", is this OCD telling you to seek balance even though the action is caused by a sensation?
Thanks so much for your well thought out examination of all this. Your thoughts and your ability to teach your ideas are very helpful Continued success.
(continuing) She can try to hold off from doing it but its like an urge to cough. Doctors can find nothing wrong with her (they scoped her throat too). The doctor today said he thought it was a tic.
My question is does this sound like a tic to you? Seems like a tic is more involuntary with a wider range of muscles that just a cough. My daughter says she's not hiccuping. It looks like she has the hiccups but she's really doing a cough. Thanks for any feedback you may have.
Thanks for your video. If I could ask your opinion? My 9 year old daughter has had a tickle (itch) in her throat for a year. We've taken her to 3 doctors. No medicines work (antihistomines, antiacids, cough meds - none work). Seems to be located just below voice box. She says it "tickles". And she very frequency (2-10 times a minute) will do a small cough (like lightly clearing her throat). There are no other muscle movements- just that. ( to be continued....)
@welovepies: Wouldn't it have been more polite to ask 'are you a young boy or a woman?' rather than directing it as though I myself were an object who couldn't answer with 'is this'? But never mind :) I am a woman. I have short hair because my face is sensitive to light touch and I can't stand the feel of my hair brushing against my face.
That's a very interesting theory. The two seem to be similar but also very different at the same time, it makes them difficult to decide on how to classify them, together or separately doesn't it?
I love the way you explained this as well, it's very well done. :D
this was interesting. thank you for this. I have a diagnosis of OCD, and i've never been diagnosed with Tourette's, but I do have tics, or what i've always thought of as tics. they're mostly facial tics, always right side of the face, blinking, but sometimes the whole right side of my body kind of curls up as if someone had startled me.
but i can't think of any sensation (or thoughts) that goes with them. the muscles just contract on their own, and i haven't noticed any pattern to it.
sometimes well alot i have to close an eyes usually my left cause it dosent feel right and turn my head and look at somethingtell it feels right and i keep doing it its not touretts i can controll it but when i dont do it when my mind tells me to it just dosent feel right
thank you for posting this. my son and i have had tics since he was 5 and i was about 7. my family thinks that we only do it because we are thinking about it which for me now goes without saying they think we are compulsive. this video will help me prove to them that we tic and are not compulsive.
I didn't know that about you... it touch me because...I think i'm bipolar too but without tics...I never go at doctor or someone else...I feel like the girl in "girl interrupted",Did you watch this film?
I don't know if i'm sick or not...maybe i don't want to know....
I don't think that compulsions are always a response to a thought. Sometimes compulsions are a response to a feeling. Someone with ocd might keep doing something over and over until it feels "right". It's like a feeling of doubt, and the feeling of doubt doesn't go away until you do the compulsion. Then it feels okay.
This is a very interesting and very, very good explanation about how these disorders relate! VERY VERY well put. Thank you for posting, you've answered many of the questions I had about how they relate.
What do you mean by tics are in response to a sensation? What kind of sensation? An urge to tic? The urge with tourettes doesn't go away until you have a tic? I thought tourettes is when your body just randomly moves without you telling it to.
Wow... You really got me thinking on this one... I have often wondered if I have OCD and that is what's causing my tics... Seriously, hearing someone else explain something I have always wondered about and believed myself is very reassuring and makes me feel like I am not alone. Thank you! The thing that really hit me was that my "OCD" doesn't really come from fear. I didn't know if that was possible and I'm glad to know it is.
this is a wonderful vid...thank you for posting it:) the tic I hated the most was my swallowing tic! You are a very brilliant person and are helping so many:)
I think this video is excellent and puts clearly into words what I have been trying to understand myself and get across to others (including my treatment team) for years. I am even tempted to suggest to my psychiatrist that she looks at your video. Thank you so much, Tictionary.
More people should see this; it was very clear and well spoken, giving a well constructed statement. I especially loved the graphs, even if it's outdated by the end of the video.
