I am truly sorry. I am a die hard NW fan (old and new- which I dont know what has of new) but I got to say that Simmone Simons, Lori Lewis, Floor Jansen, Vibeke Stene and Annlouice Loeglund murder Tarja Turunen both on recording and live. *A shower of Tarjaholics murder me with comments*. Lori, no question about it. Tarja's voice is too classicaly perfect, and therefore I don't hear any emotion in it at all, it's just about voice perfection. But when I listen to music, I want the singer to portray some sort of emotion, because that's what music is: emotion ! So my vote goes to Lori Lewis. Not only that, but Lori gives a much better live performance, as she moves around more and she seems much more friendly than Tarja does. I don't care how many people disagree with me. Go Lori !

Let me give you an example I'm listening right now: Gethesemane(Oceanborn), last chorus, second "without you". For 2 seconds that's not singing anymore, it's crying. For me those 2 seconds alone make her greater than anything Lori, Floor or whatever will accomplish in their whole career.

Technique is another discussion for another day but remember this: in their time, even great sopranos/tenors said about each other that they have crappy technique (Callas and Tebaldi for eg). :)

All Lory's songs have piano or mellow orchestra to allow her to be heard.

When Tarja sings, the orchestra can unleash anything, her voice is still heard.

This is not power, but a technique called 'squillo' which she uses since several years.

In this video there are songs with tarja sice she was mezzo, when she was lyrical then when she was spinto.

Tarja folows no style, Tarja is a style by herself.

Wacken was a not really a good (vocal) performance by Lori, she was recovering or something, 'coz she's honestly a MONSTER. On stage was amazing (forgeting about tech).

Talking about technique: Lori is faaaar better than Tarja. She uses her voice amazingly . Honestly a very good singer and probably one of the metal scene.

Tarja is famous but her voice is damaged 'coz of her wrong technique and her vibrato...is horrible.

On stage i do prefer Lori. I like tarja as well, but Lori is a queen.

I don´t know much about Lori, just what I´ve seen on this video, but Tarja uses lots of techniques, the stacatto in Passion and the Opera, vibratto in Slaying the Dreamer, the strange vocals in the middle of The Siren, the version of The Phantom of the Opera (the best version ever made...) just to mention few... Two great techniques but we have to consider that we have a dramatic soprano (tarja) and a lyric soprano (lori), and taking that in consideration, dramatic sopranos are rarer than lyrics ones... also is very important know that you are comparing an opera singer (lori) with chamber singer (tarja), it's clear that tarja's low notes are wai better than lori's ones, and the high notes on the contrary... that is charateristic of their voice, but both are awsome and show passion while sing

Tarja is a full lyrical soprano, NOT a dramatic one. She extended her register above and below lyrical registre so it may be 'lyrico spinto', but by no means is she dramatic.

Regarding your second statement - Tarja is not a chamber music singer, nor an opera one. She's a very talented rock singer which uses classical technique (along with other styles) when playing.. and from time to time she plays some opera or chamber music.

I saw thousands of comparisons of Tarja vs XX. Only Lori Lewis, Floor Jansen and Vibeke Stene are in the same 'league' as her but the difference is still huge.

The three above are opera singers playing metal.. any opera in any small town has comparable performers.

In my opinion, Tarja is special not because of her voice or technique, but because of the way she makes you feel every word she sings.

Tarja always had an unique style - not a classical or operatical style, just one based on them.

In time she sang mezzo, lyric and now she sounds more like a spinto lirico (that alone proves great talent and determination btw).

She blends techniques from other areas like church and choral music and even r&b or soul into her style when she feels like it.

This blending is the reason you like - and I love her :)

You see that as a 'taint', I see it as lyricism.

Even when Callas was in her prime there were critics of renown that trashed her voice as sounding too rash or bottled.

Some adore Sarah Brightman's voice while others say she sounds like a chipmunk and lacks technique... the list is endless.

Lori além de ter mais agilidade nas notas seu lirico soa mais natural, nada forçado, Tarja força tanto os vibratos que muitas vezes semitona no momento do vibrato. outra coisa que acontece, tarja usa notas muito agudas somente em picos ou finais de frase e quando precisa usar mais velocidade nas notas nunca usa notas muito agudas, diferente de lori, que além de brincar com a voz no agudo, consegue manter estrofes inteiras em notas altas.Indiscutivelmente tarja é FODA, mas melhor que Lori Jamais
