As a programmer I'm extremely impressed that you went for the most move-efficient solve instead of trying to copy a human method. How does the algorithm work, in general terms?
the solve in 10 sec. were just 21 steps, so the cube isn't random or you discovered the method to solve the cube in around 20 steps. the machine is nice but the solving is fake!
@TheSmetsi no, the solve is genuine. If you read the description and do a little research you'll find that CubeStormer uses a great program that can find almost optimum solutions very quickly. CubeStormer II uses a different, but equally effective algorithm that can also consistently find solutions of about 20 moves! ;-)
@TheSmetsi If you knew what you were talking about, you would know that ANY permutation of a rubix cube cant be solved in 21 moves minimum. Don't start calling shit out as fake that you have no idea about, moron. Research, Analyse and comment: easy enough.
The solving could easily be possible using a tree solving method which would calculate the least number of moves nessisary to solve the cube. Since calculations per second on computers these days are so fast, it makes more sense to do it that way. My bet (guess) is you can solve any cube in 30 moves or less. No matter the scramble.
@madcatdotexe I think you might be underestimating the complexity of the task of finding the least number of moves. Have a look at cube20(dot)org to see the work that people have done over the last 30 years or so to determine that the worst case is 20 moves. I believe there are very few algorithms that have been developed that can find such short solutions in a reasonable time.
@TheSmetsi Every single possibility of the 43 quintillion ones in a rubik's cube (besides solved) can be solved in 20 moves or less. I remember watching a video and Google lended the use of their super computers to find that number.
I'm sure you guys are using AI techniques to solve this problem. I'm studying AI now and would like to take a look in your software or at least know which methods did you use in the algorithm.
Now can you make one that will play EVE Online for me when I am at work, level up my wow character whilst doing all my ironing and picking the winning lotto numbers and tiling my kitchen. Then I will be impressed, so until then I will just carry on removing all the coloured stickers and putting them back on again.
@alchemistEXE2 Thanks, I think when you see the whole machine you may change your mind however, I put more time into the asthetical apearance of CSII than i did for CS1, l hope to release another video of CubeStormer II on my channel sometime soon.
@Brandson1000 I have tried to focus on the standard 3x3x3 cube, mechanically it could solve a 2x2x2 with a change of software, a very good friend of mine has devised a single machine which can solve all kinds of different cubes...check out "IAssemble" 's channel here on YouTube!
@RoboticSolutions I met this guy (David) today at an engineering festival in cambridge :) I'm building my own Rubik's cube solver for an AS Technology project and had a chat about it with him whilst he was displaying multicuber and the yellow android 3x3x3 solver. He mentioned that you worked on CSII together and used his algorithm to solve it instead of Cube Explorer (which i am using for my project)
Nice work! My personal record still is 1:07. But I broke the cube.
Just finished my sudoku-solver in Excel. Still needs an input/output "robot" for the real paperwork, but it does the solve. I'm impressed about the programming you had to do for this cubesolver. Many lines I guess
What's the average solve time? And what's the average number of moves it finds? And why not use 15 seconds of scan time and solution finding to find an optimal time, and NOT count this towards the total time to solve? I.e. why not follow WCA regulations?
@RoboticSolutions Thanks for replying. I actually knew that as your video shows under 11 seconds for a seemingly 20 move solve. But I'm curious as to the solve time in WCA rules. Give 15 seconds to scan, and then what's the average? All cubes have 20 move solutions, but even using CubeExplorer, you need a wealth of processing power to find it, so I'm guessing longer move solutions are normally found. In any case, interested in knowing how it'd fare in a real WCA tournament. Average 3 of 5? :)
The computer had this solved almost instantly after it fully analyzed the cube... it was just slowed down by the motors! This is really a 0.00001 second solve!
@Sonicpod0 The Motors/ RCXs in CubeStormer are not altered. The power it produces is through multiple motors and optimum gearing to suit the task. Bear in mind the NXT and the RCX have a very similar output power availability, it is "unlikely" that the NXT would offer any advantage in this application.
@MrJosiahT Colour recognition is provided by "Cube Explorer" using the LEGO webcam to capture an image of each face as it passes during the scan routine.
@RoboticSolutions Hey I'm 15 and we're doing a project in school, and my idea was to programm a LEGO Mindstorms.. It's really, really impressive what you did here, great job!

Hi, I don't know if you've considered/tested this already, in the cube inspection phase, he turns 3 then switches then turns another 3. But it's possible to scan in just 5 turns with 2 switches. (2/s/1/s/2) have you tested this to see if it's faster?
@georgetroulis Unfortunately, no, it has been designed for the 3x3x3, Have you seen "MultiCuber" by "IAssemble" like it's creator, it's really clever!
@emoman7777 sure, although being one of the combinations that requires a minimum of 20 moves, the software manages to find a 21 move solution in a fraction of a second.
I would be interested in a picture of the arms, like how they grab nicely and more. also, what electronic parts does the robot uses? somone said 24 motors...?
Dear RuBot... You have been beaten for your record time of approx. 15 seconds by a biulding toy. merry christmas. (You have toooo much attention, and you use preumatics, too loud. This machine is smaller, faster, and brilliant. Oh, and costs less to make!)
I understand how the parts Cubestormer is made with, electronic parts at least, are no longer manufactured, but are there newer versions of said parts that would serve the same purpose? In other words, could Cubestormer (or something very similar) be built today using modern bits?
@ShokaLion The newer NXT parts are very different to the older RCX type that Cubestomer uses, the result is likely to be VERY different...have you seen "YellowCube Machine"? ..that uses the NXT to very good effect. It was produced by a very good friend of mine :-)
You honestly have to make instructions on how to make that, I am sure people would find a way to use new LEGO parts to achieve something even more insane!
Cubestormer is really a lavish one off unit! it has 24 motors and 4 controllers which are no longer manufactured. It is therefore unlikely to be worth the effort it would take to produce any plans for it.
