Hmm, thats odd, intuos 4 is the industry standard and more or less everyone swears by it, well, each to their own, ive never used the 3, im fine with a graphire 4
i'm not going to lie, your computer is insane! but you could have bought all those parts separately and custom built your computer for much less than 7k!!!!!! If I had that budget my computer would be godlike, but i'm just a poor little boy.. :(
My question is, since you have the ability to have something as expensive as this hardware, why not use something like a wacom cintiq? is it not comfortable for this work or is it a completely different way of working?
thats why i dont buy alienware. I got a more powerfull pc then that and i spent 3k on it. Still its kind of a pain in the ass to buy all of the parts and then connect everything yourself.
@bezoro2008 Except when your computer breaks you've got to take the part out, ship it to the manufacturer, wait for them to process it, have them ship another one back, and then you can take your own time to put it back together. Alienware will have someone at your house by the end of the day that it breaks, and replace the broken parts no questions asked.
When you use your computer to make your living, the longer it's down the more money you've lost. Alienware solves that problem.

Have you (or anybody that you know) had any compatibility problems between Wacom tablets and different PC configurations? I've gotten a newer PC and I can't get my Intuos 2 (ok, it's quite old) to work on it!
I tested it on a different PC and it didn't work there either! So I can only draw with in on my 5+ yo PC, which is terrible.
@allluckyseven have you downloaded the updated driver from the wacom site? I don't know for sure but my guess is that you have a newer windows or OS type than your old computer so you'll need a different or newer driver.
Got a newer desktop computer (an i7) with Win7, plugged my old Intuos 2 tablet, downloaded the latest driver and tried to make it work... and it didn't.
I also tested on a friend's computer (which has the same specs as mine) and on another one which is a few years older.
I tried some older drivers aswell.
Maybe I should try installing it on a different computer, or installing XP here, but I don't have the time for that atm.. will do that soon
Whenever I try to make small brush strokes on my wacom without zooming in, my on screen brush will not move and a light blue ring will highlight/encircle it, does anyone know if/how I can get rid of this?
I agree with him about the Intunos 4 nib. I went through my first nib in two months. I had to replace it with a nib from my old overworked intunos3 which is sadly out of commission and its still going after 5 months. But I love the surface of my intunos4 over my old 3. Maybe its because i normally draw with pencil on smooth paper and he uses pen and marker so its different for him as far as feel. Wacom needs to work out that nib thing. We pay a lot so we deserve quality, you know?
You can calibrate the colors on your monitor, and there are way higher quality ones over Dell. You're overpaying either way for the quality. Honestly, just make it a rule to never buy Apple stuff, there's always something better for way less.
I notice you have the Application Bar hidden, the one that has icons for Bridge and stuff. How did you hide that? I can't for the life of me find how.
i just got my Intous4 M yesturday but ive got a problem since ive never used photoshop. It is the problem with the opacity that you talk about in 13:02 and since you got CS1 and ive got CS5 i cant find what to do. I can find opacity but if i turn it to 1 wich seams to be the minimum every thing I draw just gets or none colured. pls help sry if you dont understand what im refering to ive looked every where but i cant turne it of (the thing that makes me get unintentional coulor changes) pls help
Hi Feng, love your videos, this one was specially helpful too, the tip about setting the opacity off on brushes and locking the smoothing down awsum! ,,
do you have to do each brush settings individually then? im guessing you do,, ive just started sorting my own out finally!
also wanted to ask about your desk settings, im finding long sessions at my desk give my back hell,, do you have any tips regarding your 'comfort' at the desk? thanks again for these wonderful vids
what I don't understand is that I have a laptop with 6 GB memory and it's a 64 bit laptop, but still photoshop Cs2 only uses about 2,7 GB at when I go to memory and image cash and slide it to 100%. How is this possible?
i'm torn between the 9X6" and 8X13"wacom intuos 4 and can't decide which one to buy. Feng has a bigger and better monitor(2560X1600/ 30") than mine and recommends using 9X12" tablet. but mine is smaller with a lower screen reloution(24"by Dell/1920X1080). Intuos4 offers 9X6" midium size and 8X13" large size here in korea. Can anyone tell me which one would work better for me? need to practice digital paintings and work on my porfolio soon. thx!! ^^
@TheGreatBokChoi I also use a bamboo fun. You can get the detail you need. Bamboo has pen pressure and the largest drawing area on any Wacom tablet. Including the best one. It just doesn't have tilt which isn't really necessary if you're taking up Digital paining as a hobby.
i wonder if 9X6" wacomtablet isnt big enough for me and need to get a larger one. i have a 24" monitor by Dell(1920X1080 resolution). Intuos4 offers 9X6" midium size and 8X13" large size here in korea. would you be nice to give me some tips which one would work better for me ? im using a tablet for working on my portfolio. thx!!
@TheGreatBokChoi Yes you can do digital painting. My PC is a Anthlon 64 2.2 Ghz / 2GB Mem / 6100 Gforce on Windows XP. My computer sucks you can handle it fine.
Hey Feng, would you say the Intuos 4 is a good model to invest in or would it be better to hold out for the Intuos 5 and see if they fix the nibs and drawing surface? You sound like you prefer the nib on the 3. I have no idea how long they usually take to come out with a new version and if they don't plan on releasing a 5 by later next year I wouldn't wana wait.
hey i have a problem where if i go over a line ive drawn that isnt at 100% opacity, i can go over it again and it becomes darker...and i get that muddy looking affect thats really annoying...i want to get rid of it but i dont know how...
Hi Guys, About the intuos 4 tablet's surface being too slippery: Grab a large sheet of paper, overlay it on your tablet, and tape the edges. Voila, perfect paper feel, nib's don't wear out as quickly, no impact on dpi accuracy or pen pressure, and you can take it off anytime you want.
I had the same problems concerning the drawing surface and the nibs on the Intuos4 so I bought a sheet of Acetate, cut it a bit larger than the drawing surface and taped it on top. It acts like a protective layer and it works prefectly.
With oppacity off, how do you blend colors? In real media, colors tend to smear/blend when you paint over 1 color with another-- It seems like for a beginner, it would slow you up a lot having to pick a different tint or shade each time you wanted to lighten or darken the paint..
You are correct. What I do is control the opacity manually - just like in real life. I press the 1 to 9 keys to control how much of the paint gets applied. Also, for beginners, it's better to not blend anything. Have each value be very distinct.
One thing PS doesn't do is mix colors (for example, mixing blue paint on yellow will result in green in real life). So to accomplish this, one must learn about color theory; or use Coral Painter which mixes in real-time.
@Fengdesigns thanks for responding! So, the 1-9 keys will change paint oppac. 10%-90% right? Do you advise setting up a palette in PS with all planned values laid out? If so, what's the best way to do this? Is there a way to save values and colors or should I make a new layer and paint dabs of colors in the upperhand corner to pull from with the eyedrop tool? -thanks for your time in advance
Yeah, I wish Wacom would've kept the Intuos3 design and added the Intuos4 features. I've got a Intuos4 and these nibs wear out so fast, and I also find that surface a bit slippier, too. But I kinda adapted to it. Anyway, thanks for this helpful video! Very informative! And I was hoping you did one on some of the tech specs you're using!
@AlisherUA : Feng talks a little bit about painter in the vehicle sketching tutorial i think, he says he only uses painter for line work because it feels like using paper and is very natural, but he only uses it as a sketch book, so no special settings really, he does give the tip that you must set up the pressure of the tablet within painter so that it adjusts to your personal pressure use, he also imports his brush from painter 4 (mentioned in this tut) , hope thats useful.
