Having only ever heard the other version of this song, I wondered how there could be a "Mellow Version". The other one is hardly speed metal. This really is a different song entirely. I may not prefer this take, but it's pretty damn good nonetheless.
Thanks for the info on Bonham. Damn if the drum track doesn't sound like Bonham though. It has that that heavy sound that's so indicative of him. Oh well. It sound marvelous regardless of who was playing the skins.
Been looking for this version for awhile. Isn't that John Bonham on the drums? Whether it is or not, the drum track is so much better on this version.
@jaleach123 Bonham has never played on a Donovan session. In fact, he plyed on relatively few recording sessions until the first Led Zeppelin album. Donovan's fanciful memory credited him as playing on some of his recordings, but this was later proven incorrect...
I can't begin to tell you how long I have looked for this particular version! Simply magical! In my opinion, this version is far superior to the more upbeat, earlier version. Thank you!
I've loved the wistful beauty of this since I first heard it back in the 60's. I attached meaning to it for a few people in the past too.. The wind always slipped through my fingers in the end.
I love this version. This Greatest Hits LP was actually the 1st Donovan LP I bought in the late 70's. I loved his music as a child in the 60's and always loved his hits. I heard this version of this song and just played it over & over. So haunting and lovely. Then I looked in used record stores up in San Francisco (where I lived at the time) & Berkley and bought all of them. Same w "Melanie" who was the female "love child" (Donovan was the male) who sang "Beautiful People."
I may as well try also if I think I could sing this any better than Donovan. Here is a bit more trivia for ya.Jimmy Page Produced Hurdy Gurdy Man.He also played guitar on it and many other tracks.I believe J.Paul Jones did session work on many tunes.
I like this version. A couple of years ago, he had a newer version posted on his web site that was recorded in recent years. It was this tempo but was just him and guitar. It beat the socks off either this or the original. It's not there any more."Art is not eternal, boys." - Ken Kesey
Great version... But the original is fantastic as well. Will people PLEASE stop comparing Donovan to Bob Dylan? The original is not "Dylanesque," okay? It's original and it's refreshing and it's a great song in its own right. I'm a huge Dylan fan but people need to stop acting like anything with a guitar and a harmonica is copying him... Besides, Donovan and Dylan were contemporaries, and, if I'm not mistaken, friends as well (Donovan appeared in Dylan's "Subterranean" video).
@ChrisnSnoop yeah they were mates and they hung out together too, there is a youtube vid of donovan and bob in a hotel, chilling, and singing songs. its awesome to see them together.
was a troubadour in that he Always had time to play for the people, @ the early festivals whenever the band due were late for some reason "IT'S DONOVAN" & up he'd get & play till they arrived often pulling friends up out of the audience to form impromptu bands. Love Him ♥

@catkisser: well actually in his case the "Greatest Hits" album. This plus "Colours" and "Season of the Witch" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Sunshine Superman", "Jennifer Juniper".. all classics.
Oh man, this is so beautiful! I have never heard this version. As a 29 year old male, this is one of my favorite songs. I love the original, never really heard it as a Dylan copy. I hear the similarity if I try, but to me its just a beautiful Donovan song, either way you take it. These are two voices that cannot be, and should not be compared in my opinion. Anyway, Thanks for posting this!
Glad that you posted this! Actually Donovan re-recorded this for two reasons--first, Hickory Records would not give him the original version for the Epic greatest hits album, and he wanted to "update" the song from the Dylan imitiation that dominates the original. LOVE IT. (Sadly, when Epic rereleased the album, they dropped this for the inferior original.)
@Rainwhisker167 I like the original. I wouldn't call it inferior. Just different. I dig this version too but I don't know if I'd call the other version inferior.
man this song is the best! It was definitely better back then when men expressed their romantic and soft side and now it's all "gonna pick the world up and drop it on your f**king head"
I love the ending on this version. It's the version I heard and knew first. I don't remember it being this mellow maybe becasue I never hear this version anymore.
thank you Soulflower! this the best version ever ! We'll ride the wind on our magic carpet forever *8*! your rock my world and groove me soul baby! I Love Ypou back! Peace!!
This is by far the grooviest version of Donovan singing this song. I've already caught the wind with my precious sweet freespirit, the kindest gentle lover on Planet Earth he is , thank you baby for being who you are, you rock my Universe in the sweetest of ways, I Love You!! Peace;-)
@ShadowWanderer1 - The original issue of "Donovan's Greatest Hits" had this version of "Catch The Wind" and a re-recorded version of "Colours". The re-release which was released around 200 featured the original versions of those songs as well as four recordings not featured on the original release.
One of my favourite numbers from the early sixties.
This is interesting - starts beautifully (as does the original). Another of his versions but I still love the harmonica version best; one note to add, I think he probably did this one to show off his vocals - very sweet!
For all you acoustic guitar players out there - this is an easy tune to play - go for it! :)
I agree completely....lacks the beauty of the original....totally lacks it....it's too slow and dragged out...you lose the flow of the song and it's ruined!
i remeber this version, which album is it on? i know i've heard it. i was in the army from 1970 to 1973. someone there had it on an album. or maybe i drempt it all? we did alot of LSD back then. i laughed at the guy who said is the turn table at the correct speed.
May be the only instance of artists not being able to afford rights to their own material having a beautiful result. I can't even comprehend the horrible significance of that state of affairs having any good effect.
But this song certainly proves the exception to the rule. Beautiful, beautiful soft lens capture of the ephemeral quality of the way love feels, with such a subtle rise of the emotions and crescendo of the spirit...
oldies55, this version is so superior to the dylanesque, Thank You
While I enjoy Donovan's old folk style, it can't begin to compare with this far superior mellow version. To me, this is much more like Wear Your Love Like, Jennifer Juniper, or other such fair. This is so beautiful. This is the Donovan I really relate to. I also love the mellow version of Colours if I can find it. Good upload.
I am definatly one of these, but it does no good, when she doesnt want to love you back, even when says shes falling in love, with you. Woman are... To complicated.

I am partial to the, as you call it, Dylanesque version, but this one is beautiful in a different way! I love it. It's very passionate and sweet sounding. Thank you for posting!
