  • tonytheponyism Your are welcome ! Another beautiful song is Hey girl by Freddie Scott. I wish you the best . And remember it is good to cry .

  • Having only ever heard the other version of this song, I wondered how there could be a "Mellow Version". The other one is hardly speed metal. This really is a different song entirely. I may not prefer this take, but it's pretty damn good nonetheless.

  • I dedicate this beautiful song to my autistic daughter I love you !

  • @7thgeorgiegirl I also have an autistic daughter (12 years old now) = made me cry..but in a good way. Thankyou!!

  • How could I have never heard this version before? Love this! Thanks so much!

  • I really cant believe there would be anyone who would dislike a Donovan song, especially this one.

  • ah but i may aswell try && catch the wind... <3

  • Thanks for the info on Bonham. Damn if the drum track doesn't sound like Bonham though. It has that that heavy sound that's so indicative of him. Oh well. It sound marvelous regardless of who was playing the skins.

  • Been looking for this version for awhile. Isn't that John Bonham on the drums? Whether it is or not, the drum track is so much better on this version.

  • @jaleach123 Bonham has never played on a Donovan session. In fact, he plyed on relatively few recording sessions until the first Led Zeppelin album. Donovan's fanciful memory credited him as playing on some of his recordings, but this was later proven incorrect...

  • * * * * *

  • This is the song I think was spinning subconsciously in my head and manifested the love of my life.

    I love you my patty-pie!

  • I can't begin to tell you how long I have looked for this particular version! Simply magical! In my opinion, this version is far superior to the more upbeat, earlier version. Thank you!

  • I like how this song builds up so perfectly, by the time the bass kicks in, I'm already in another dimension :)

  • i love this so so so so so much

  • Great stuff, they don`t make them like this anymore....!

  • I've loved the wistful beauty of this since I first heard it back in the 60's. I attached meaning to it for a few people in the past too.. The wind always slipped through my fingers in the end.

  • This version is the superior version. Gorgeous. Kills me to listen to it. And that's what great music is all about. God bless.

  • I love this version. This Greatest Hits LP was actually the 1st Donovan LP I bought in the late 70's. I loved his music as a child in the 60's and always loved his hits. I heard this version of this song and just played it over & over. So haunting and lovely. Then I looked in used record stores up in San Francisco (where I lived at the time) & Berkley and bought all of them. Same w "Melanie" who was the female "love child" (Donovan was the male) who sang "Beautiful People."

  • I may as well try also if I think I could sing this any better than Donovan. Here is a bit more trivia for ya.Jimmy Page Produced Hurdy Gurdy Man.He also played guitar on it and many other tracks.I believe J.Paul Jones did session work on many tunes.

  • That can he put so much eloquence and yearning in a song astounds me still.

  • What a beautiful song--I prefer this version , too.

  • The absolute best!!!!!!

  • this is my fav version...crash of the drums picks up the pace nicely.

  • My favorite one!

  • This beats the living bejesus out of the original version (and that´s saying something, because the original version ain´t no slouch).

  • OMG your are now my hero, I have been looking for this version for YEARS!!!!!! thank you SOO much, I havent heard this since i had the Record.

  • It's on my greatest hits from him, and .... I stole it from my sister. Shhhhhhh, don't tell.

  • Starting around 3 minnutes... the bass line is just poetic... ah... how I wish I lived in those times.

  • I like this version. A couple of years ago, he had a newer version posted on his web site that was recorded in recent years. It was this tempo but was just him and guitar. It beat the socks off either this or the original. It's not there any more."Art is not eternal, boys." - Ken Kesey

  • @Itty0420 yet the inspiration of all art is...you cannot forget that. Even in a dark empty cell on the brink of madness one can be moved.

  • love this song. have had many a mellow moment to this song. peace

  • It does not get better than this in trying to catch the wind.

  • It does not get better than this in trying to catch the wind.

  • Great version... But the original is fantastic as well. Will people PLEASE stop comparing Donovan to Bob Dylan? The original is not "Dylanesque," okay? It's original and it's refreshing and it's a great song in its own right. I'm a huge Dylan fan but people need to stop acting like anything with a guitar and a harmonica is copying him... Besides, Donovan and Dylan were contemporaries, and, if I'm not mistaken, friends as well (Donovan appeared in Dylan's "Subterranean" video).

    TY for upload, btw

  • @ChrisnSnoop yeah they were mates and they hung out together too, there is a youtube vid of donovan and bob in a hotel, chilling, and singing songs. its awesome to see them together.

  • love it!

  • Beautiful music such as this great old song helps ones soul to breath.Take care ADonovan43

  • *****

  • was a troubadour in that he Always had time to play for the people, @ the early festivals whenever the band due were late for some reason "IT'S DONOVAN" & up he'd get & play till they arrived often pulling friends up out of the audience to form impromptu bands. Love Him ♥

  • So sweet and dreamy.

  • WOW! Thank you!

  • been looking 4 this version 4 quite a few years(mellow?thisROCKS !!)

  • You can get this mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • This is one of a select few of songs that served as the soundtrack to an entire generation. I bet Dylan wishes he wrote this one.

  • @mattfireisland lol?

  • Great version. I heard this first on 8 track in 1970. I haven't been able to find it on any CD. I believe it was omitted. Any idea where I can purchase it??

  • I always loved this version. My big brother won the "Best of" album from a radio station and I learned those songs at an early age.

  • @catkisser: well actually in his case the "Greatest Hits" album. This plus "Colours" and "Season of the Witch" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Sunshine Superman", "Jennifer Juniper".. all classics.

  • This is brillant! Its like getting into the tardis and going back to the best of the 60! I can see why Sir Paul was so blown away by Donovan.

  • Thanks for the post!

    A classic!

  • love it

  • Again.... original is always the best.

  • @hmoob7

if you think the original catch the wind is better than this, you're very wrong and also a dicksucker

  • @ApocalypseNow318 And you're a eater of ass-discharge! XD

  • Oh man, this is so beautiful! I have never heard this version. As a 29 year old male, this is one of my favorite songs. I love the original, never really heard it as a Dylan copy. I hear the similarity if I try, but to me its just a beautiful Donovan song, either way you take it. These are two voices that cannot be, and should not be compared in my opinion. Anyway, Thanks for posting this!

  • Glad that you posted this! Actually Donovan re-recorded this for two reasons--first, Hickory Records would not give him the original version for the Epic greatest hits album, and he wanted to "update" the song from the Dylan imitiation that dominates the original. LOVE IT. (Sadly, when Epic rereleased the album, they dropped this for the inferior original.)

  • @Rainwhisker167 This is why I adore Ytube-Thanks for your informative comment and for dropping by my channel!! Have a wicked good day!

  • @Rainwhisker167 excellent thanks for that info chum....what a stunning version though

  • ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh oldie55 THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!!

  • @Rainwhisker167 I don,t know about you but this version is just as good as the original. The original is more folk oriented.

  • @Rainwhisker167 I like the original. I wouldn't call it inferior. Just different. I dig this version too but I don't know if I'd call the other version inferior.

  • @Rainwhisker167 I love this version sooooo much more than the Dylan immitation.

  • This is the Cosmic version, not the Mellow Version.

  • en mi opinión, la versión definitiva de esta extraordinaria canción

  • Hmm I like this but it doesn't seem to have the same groove as the original..

  • An exquisite track!! So superior to the mono single version. I get chills everytime the bass and drums come in. Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • man this song is the best! It was definitely better back then when men expressed their romantic and soft side and now it's all "gonna pick the world up and drop it on your f**king head"

  • I love the ending on this version. It's the version I heard and knew first. I don't remember it being this mellow maybe becasue I never hear this version anymore.

  • great song

  • this wears well. I own this but YouTube is more fun!

  • this is my favorite version of catch the wind. it makes me think about life.

  • after listening to many versions of this song, this is definately my favorite. it makes me slow down and think about life.

  • Soooooo good!!!!!!

  • thank you Soulflower! this the best version ever ! We'll ride the wind on our magic carpet forever *8*! your rock my world and groove me soul baby! I Love Ypou back! Peace!!

  • This is by far the grooviest version of Donovan singing this song. I've already caught the wind with my precious sweet freespirit, the kindest gentle lover on Planet Earth he is , thank you baby for being who you are, you rock my Universe in the sweetest of ways, I Love You!! Peace;-)

  • I love this version <3 Much gratitude for posting it!

  • My copy of Donovan's Greatest Hits doesn't have this version....

  • @ShadowWanderer1 - The original issue of "Donovan's Greatest Hits" had this version of "Catch The Wind" and a re-recorded version of "Colours". The re-release which was released around 200 featured the original versions of those songs as well as four recordings not featured on the original release.

  • So cool!

  • i love this kind of music the chillin stuff i was wandering if any buddy had ideas for me

  • One of my favorite Donovan songs. Thanks for posting it!

  • One of my favourite numbers from the early sixties.

This is interesting - starts beautifully (as does the original). Another of his versions but I still love the harmonica version best; one note to add, I think he probably did this one to show off his vocals - very sweet!

For all you acoustic guitar players out there - this is an easy tune to play - go for it! :)

  • This version is the BEST!

Far better than the folksy version, I love the instruments coming in on the final chorus.

Thanks a whole heap for posting it.

  • C'est la version qui m'a fait découvert la chanson

  • much inferior to the original

  • I agree completely....lacks the beauty of the original....totally lacks it....it's too slow and dragged out...you lose the flow of the song and it's ruined!

  • nevermind, i just noticed it's from his greatest hits. and a great hit it is.

  • i remeber this version, which album is it on? i know i've heard it. i was in the army from 1970 to 1973. someone there had it on an album. or maybe i drempt it all? we did alot of LSD back then. i laughed at the guy who said is the turn table at the correct speed.

    oh well its Great! thanks.

    peace-out, lardo.

  • are you sure the lp is spinning at the correct rpm?

  • it most certainly is

  • oh how amazing is this. so haunting, a beautiful version..

  • May be the only instance of artists not being able to afford rights to their own material having a beautiful result. I can't even comprehend the horrible significance of that state of affairs having any good effect.

But this song certainly proves the exception to the rule. Beautiful, beautiful soft lens capture of the ephemeral quality of the way love feels, with such a subtle rise of the emotions and crescendo of the spirit...

oldies55, this version is so superior to the dylanesque, Thank You

  • God, so Beautiful !

  • Tremendously superior to the original version (and that one ain´t no slouch either).

  • i like how it sayes mellow version as if the original is a death metal track lol

  • @dragonfitter

I agree...lol. It should have just been titled "slower, softer version"

  • I can't take it.

  • this is surreal!!

  • this version is amazing, music is love

  • While I enjoy Donovan's old folk style, it can't begin to compare with this far superior mellow version. To me, this is much more like Wear Your Love Like, Jennifer Juniper, or other such fair. This is so beautiful. This is the Donovan I really relate to. I also love the mellow version of Colours if I can find it. Good upload.

  • i love this song as well, and am glad to find it up here =) best version ever. good old love makin' songs

  • This version lures you in by the ears, then drop-kicks it to your heart, ...LOVE IT!! Still my fave!!!! : D

  • Wow. Thank god there are men not afraid of their softer, romantic side.

  • Thanks for dropping by!

  • You're welcome.

  • @oldies55

I am definatly one of these, but it does no good, when she doesnt want to love you back, even when says shes falling in love, with you. Woman are... To complicated.

    :'(

  • Thank you SO much for posting this masterpiece . . . It is without question the BEST version of this song, and I've looked for it for years. THANKS A MILLION!!!!

  • man, this is my very favorite version of this song. i only have it on a cassette tape though, which i just mins ago tried to play but it hisses so badily that this song is nearly inaudable. so thank you for putting this gem on here. any chance i could get an mp3?

  • Did you hear this song in the trailer for "Flower"? That's what made me look this up. It's a wonderful song, though. :D

  • The first half of this is extrodinary...

  • the 2nd half isn't bad either! Thanks for dropping by and commenting!

  • I grew up with this version too- I love the 'Spectoresque' explosion tward the end of this song!

  • Thanks for commenting!

  • Interesting alternate version; I still like the original best.

  • Such a beautiful song and singing! :)

  • Thanks for dropping by!

  • I think this version is "harder" than the acoustic. And by far the better of the two. Thanks for posting! ; )

  • YW!

  • After all that I forgot to thank oldies55 for posting this. Thanks man! Been a while since I heard it. I need to dig my old album out and give it a proper spin!

  • Ty Jon!

  • Does anyone know where I can get this version on mp3 or cd? The <4 minute version was listed on the Donovan's Greatest Hits cd that Amazon offered, and I looked around for this version and couldn't find it.

  • Tried to contact you via a direct message...no reply

  • This version is off his "Greatest Hits" vinyl album on Epic. The 1990 CD release had this version. It is now out of print but can be found in used CD stores. When Legacy remastered his Greatest Hits package in the 2000s they removed this version of the song in favor of his more upbeat solo acoustic version. The original "Greatest Hits" package also has a FAR superior version of "Colours," which they replaced on the newer releases as well. Stupid record companies. Hope this helps!

  • obviously I have it if you want it

  • This version is the one that truly captures the emotion of this song. To me this is the best version of this song.

  • Thanks for commenting!

  • From inside his mind...

    Classic and so true..

  • I was thinking about this version just a week or so ago, and that I'd not heard it for 15 or 20 years. My favourite version of this song, happy I found it here by accident, thanks a lot for sharing it was awesome hearing it again :-)

  • YW!

  • wow I never heard this version...it's awesome too

  • I am partial to the, as you call it, Dylanesque version, but this one is beautiful in a different way! I love it. It's very passionate and sweet sounding. Thank you for posting!

  • Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen

  • Oh good grief - I like the song, but wow, this version burned my ears. No, no, no.

  • some people prefer the "Dylanesque " version-I happen to like this one. Thanks for commenting.
