How to capture an atmosphere!! Will never be a good show as Deadwood was.. it was so insanely good and thorough. will watch it over and over again, if mr Milch can see this, please at least make those movies!!!
Green grow the lilac's on the piano extremely well fitted
His day’s work done, violence both malevolent and kind passed by and his interests advanced, Al looks out on his charges at peace. All is, for just a moment, at peace in his world.

I both love and hate Al in this scene. He's obviously enjoying the moment between the Doc and jewell, but he stiil needs to show Trixie who's boss . . . but then, he hangs his head in shame at his own behaviour towards another person.
Ian McShane, you are fantastic at what you do . . . cocksucker! :)
I think Al was in love with her. and she kinda knew it. But she liked sol and broke his heart. that look he gives her makes me sad. a man who lost love and man enough to live it. man enough to live with the consequences of his own actions. al. rocks.
Just read Geri Jewell's autobiography and she said of this scene that it was so late and she was so exhausted and in so much pain that Brad Dourif literally had to carry her through the dancing.
This bit made me wanna bawl my eyes out. The Doc seeing that there is some good he can do in the world after having to watch the Minister suffer that torture, and Jewel is just so happy. The last two eps of this season are the best TV I've ever seen.
Do you guys know the title of the background song? it's not beautiful dreamer. I've listened to the sample of the cd. it sounds more like a mix of that song and when we were young maggie. but i can't find the exact title. PLZ HELP!!!
@leminem26 After driving me nuts for awhile and thinking it was beautiful dreamer i emailed Dave Bourne's website and they told me the song is "Green Grow The Lilacs" we finally have the name!

Al Swearengen was a ruthless bastard who would go to no means to get what he wants, but despite all of the things he was, he had a soul, which was one of the major points of the series.
Shame HBO had no soul for stopping this masterpiece though. I pray it comes back, not looking good though.
It was mentioned elsewhere that he took Jewel out of a bad situation, no one wanted her. She said things to him in the series no one else could get away with.
Kind of hard to give you the evidence when this dang page wont let me post any URL's.
Dave Bourne did all the saloon piano playing for the deadwood series. he has 5 cd sets out with his music. on his first, track 2 is beautiful dreamer. this exact piece.

is the direct link to his info and cd's. again i can't post the URL.
I think we all learned a good bit about Al when he revealed his bro had seizures (and they'd charge ppl to watch), so we can understand why he had a soft spot for Jewell.
I didn't watch Deadwood past season 1; too much nastiness for my tastes. But this scene nearly redeemed the series for me. It's beautiful and touching.
Beautiful scene. Been looking for it for a long time. Final moments of season 1. They're all watching Jewel and Doc dancing and the look Al gives Trixie and the bow of his head for just a moment. He loves her. Thanks for posting.
I never get emotional watching TV or movies - ever. But the first time I saw this scene, tears poured down my face. Best, most rewarding experience watching TV I've ever had. Loved everything about this episode. Thanks for posting
@SG1Mitchell The tune being played is " Green Grow The Lilacs'. It was a popular song during the Civil War. I agree this is the most tearjerking rendition i've ever heard. Deadwood is the greatest ! Jacque damaxan14@gmail.com
This is probably the most touching scene in the Deadwood series, in which Al's humaness and sensitivity are displayed- subtly, without his even having to say a word...
Does anyone else feel some kind of fire between Doc and Jewel???

It took me a while to find but finally:
the name of the piece is "Beautiful Dreamer" created by Stephen Foster in 1862

As far as I can tell that isn't the same piece. Unless the piano is subtly hidden in the background. Can you show me what piece you referenced?
