Beautiful music, but why do so many people have to post a comment all with words from the song|? Can't you all write you're own stuff? Go back to sleep, bloody time wasters.
for my father who, once took me to Paris,-we are Greeks-where he lived for 2 years. Its his favored city of all.He passed away,in 1997,but when i see Paris, i see him,and i beleive he is watching .My dream is to live there someday...
my son misses me apparently. but well both go and live in thai when hes old enough so we we will not have to endure you western whores. oh! im oim irish by the way. 99 problems...no need to explain the rest....cunts
This is the only band whose songs on their albums make me cry consistently. This one makes my heart bleed. I just find it hard to tell other people about this kind of thing. Either one is in the zeitgeist & vibe of this or one is not. So, on the one hand yes, this is lacerating. On the other hand, listening to this late at night does nothing more than reinforce the sad feeling that for nearly 52 years I have felt apart from others Bullied & physically abused in private school, called names.
@Jonnobaas It's like there is an invisble wall between yourself and others.Looking through a window at something you aren't a part of.I've felt that way,on and off,for most of my life. It's better now, thank the gods, but school was absolute hell.I wouldn't want to live thru that part of my life again for any amount of money.47 is much better than 18 was, that's for sure!
the trumpet solo at 3:45 is my favorite part. So delicate. I rarely like covers more then the originals, but I would argue strongly with anyone that this cover is superior to the original.
@geridg I've just started playing this album after too many years without it and hearing the solo you mention was when I remembered why I used to play all three of the This Mortal Coil albums constantly. There's not enough music that is this special.
Well done! I've always loved/hated this song. My father DID promise me the world. Only to make the world rain down upon me like a heavy sleet. I still hold a candle for him, that someday he will become a better man.
So beautiful just got Filigree and Shadow today after having lost my other cd,,,,so happy to listen to all the perfect, magical songs again!Thinking George Michael covered this, smart man, this song is lush!
Filigree & Shadow has to be one of the finest albums ever put together, from start to end it flows with such tremendous emotional scope it never fades. This song is a highlight, Alison Limerick's voice is just sublime, the piano, cellos, lyrics....love it...
@seaclouds What group (if any) was Alison in? I had this album from the month it came out on a cassette for years then I got it on cd. It is a masterful album start to finish. One of the highlights of my extensive music collection. The members of Cocteau Twins worked on this album (I know that much lol....because I loved Cocteau Twins). Peace and joy...
Have loved this song for years after my husband bought the LP for me. The song permeates your mind and pops out at choice moments. I thought the singer was Alison Moyet for a long time ( under a different name) but since geting a PC have looked up the singer - beautiful voice
Perhaps the best song on a fantastic album that rivals Joy Division's Closer or Floyd's 2 early 70s albums as almost faultless; lyrically this song touches me on many levels as my grandfather died in a mining accident before I was born; with the greatest respect to Judy Collins, she doesn't bring out the power of her lyrics in the almost matter-of-fact way she delivers them (reminiscent of Curtis & Love Will Tear Us Apart); the vocal performance bt TMC is equal to the lyrics, and the music too!
They have a box set with It'll End In Tears, Filigree and Shadow, Blood, and one disc of the originals from the artists they redid these songs from. Check out Emmy Lou Harris' song Til I Gain Control Again. It is better that TMC's version. Filigree and Shadow was my favorite, still have the LP's. If you ever did lsd to this you would be blown away. This song My Father sticks in your head years after. True Art
If you like this wonderful song, then I STRONGLY urge you to buy 'Filigree & Shadow' which is a collection - including this - of equally fantastic songs, performed by 'This Mortal Coil', who were artists on the 4AD record label. I have owed the vinyl of this since the late '80s. Still knocks me out every time I listen to it.
Beautiful music, but why do so many people have to post a comment all with words from the song|? Can't you all write you're own stuff? Go back to sleep, bloody time wasters.

According to a recent interview in Mojo with Ivo, Elizabeth Fraser recorded the original vocal of this song but wouldn't let him use it.
