RIP Syd Barrett, thanks for all the great tunes, and all the inspiration, and some great experience's i had with your music. you are one of the greatest musicians of all time. shine on you crazy diamond. :(
@MickeyLove01 People said Barrett was mad or LSD destroyed and yet his 2 solo albums show a superior song writers. PF didn't want him anymore so he carried on writing gems that have never been equaled.
Dominoes is a piece of genius. Why would he WANT to remain in a music industry that began less and less with each decade till NOW? He had a lucky escape before people soured his talent and money men to whored him out. Waters became a tit and Gilmore lost his hair. Barrett got peace and quiet.
@thatsthewayitgoes09 Thanks for the essay. I don't see the correlation between being a middle class twerp and your reply. In my opinion, Barrett showed initial talent but his solo stuff was annoying. I will refresh my memory with a quick listen of the title to which you refer.
@MickeyLove01 "Thanks for the essay. I don't see the correlation between being a middle class twerp and your reply".
I write anything I want and how do you know I'm middle class? Just because I wrote something with care and understand the subject? Oh dear another angry Irish prick troll! Coming from someone who wrote GARBAGE poetry on his channel I find it funny you think you're expert on me or Syd's.
If you don't like his music THEN FUCK OFF. Write about incest because you clearly love it.
@thatsthewayitgoes09 Thanks for your reply. Youtube is for people to offer an opinion regardless of whether it agrees with yours or not. I have no idea why you appear so angry at what has been said but I couldn't really care less anyway. You should also learn the difference between poem and limericks. And what is with the americanisms? You sound like sound like a right dumb fuck.
@siouxie921 I just think as soon as "Animals" came along Waters had formed the idea he WAS PF and by "Final Cut" he was writng dreary anti - middle class 'grey clouds' music and even when he'd left he tried to stop the rest carrying on the group. The only person who could truely say they were PF was Syd because he's the only one who never acted like he was the beginning and end of it.
Perhaps on 1 LSD trip he saw the future with Justin Bieber and all the other crap? Decision made for him.....
Hongkongscene- Thanks for sharing. And yes, all bro's and sisters, Syd was a genius. The question we should all be asking, is how can we (society) prevent geniuses from feeling alienated and destroying themselves?
Whether the genius be mathematical, or artistic/creative, or whatever. And you know, so many millions of people seem to think that art, and artists, don't really matter. That all that matters is "the bottom line" and money. Well, art and artists matter. Especially the talented.
@dudebearpig05 Yeah, I'm looking for that song too! I've heard all studio albums and many bootlegs but I just can't find it. If someone knows song at 9:31 I would be really grateful! Peace
Who the fuck 'dislikes' this? Lamest 11 people in the world! haha.Agree to the brim with the BBC over simplification and LBjim (re: royalties) - I'd recommend Rob Chapman's book " A very irregular head" . Just saw an exhibition here in London of Syd's art/ letters. Heartwrenchingly amazing.
@jamesa4050 So true. It's just another example of how the media and large parts of society are uncomfortable talking honestly about mental illness. A lot of people close to him and mental health professionals now think that Syd had schizophrenia, which people usually have a genetic predisposition for. I don't believe that Syd's LSD/drug use was the cause of his mental illness but it would probably have exacerbated his symptoms.
@lilymacsification I can tell you from both personal experience and what I've read that LSD can trigger early onsets of schizophrenia. I had a friend as a teenager that I used to take acid with....around 19 he was taken out of school and ended up in a hospital because his parents said he was acting violent and having delusions. He took quite a bit of acid but his parents also said they had a family history of schizophrenia. I've read this can happen sometimes with those two things.
@lilymacsification 100% WRONG! His sister-in-law has said that LSD was what caused his mental breakdown. She went onto say what an evil drug it is to turn somebody like Syd into what he became at the end of 1967. Don't think it was anything mental because it was the drugs, simple as that. Look at it as a cautionary tale.
she had also stated that he may have had aspergers. so I'm, supporting what lilymacsification, going to point out that it was plainly stated that L.S.D probably "exacerbated his symptoms". please don't speak without experience when it comes to drugs. do as you will with other topics, but, it makes your "evidence" less valid if you have never experienced such things.
@larr393 Well the operative word here is may have had it. And as for your comment about experience, I've never done LSD but I have known friends who have done it, and I was able to see what Syd went through. So to put it another way, bugger off. Have a nice day.
i wish i lived in England or at least somewhere in europe. i think i could musically relate to people there better than here in USA. i know just about all the chords of pink floyd songs on guitar and i think i could impress some british folks haha
@freddiebarry93 You will find a great deal more classic rock and blues fans here in the states than you will in Europe. Unfortunately, the techno scene is moving through that continent like an unstoppable tsunami.
@flockofseagulls87 well i guess it depends. right now people my age (16 and 17ish) are into pretty much just rap music. i mean im not gonna hate on it but it sucks they can't open their mind to other sorts of music
Rick hit a cord there about not seeing your friend grow up. My best friend went crazy with magic mushrooms, acid and speed and has spent the last 20 years in institutions. Like Syd, he is also a genius, a poet and an artist.
@americanmisfit1 agree it's filled with crooks. Also seems like majority of people are materialistic. There are some good people here though. Not all Americans are the same.

@MichaelLebury There single See Emily Play was a hit in the UK and their debut went to N0.6 but it wasn't until Dark Side Of The Moon that Pink Floyd were discoverd world wide
@auralexstasy most of Waters inspiration came from Barret's life and personality. Stop being a jerk, lets love every member of the greatest band ever. If Waters was that great he would have done it again after he left which he didn't. A band is a band don't try to understand that.
Waters is the key writing genius, Gilmour is the key guitar sound of Floyd. Syd is overrated. Floyd's best material does not include Syd. Their most acid stuff is their most popular stuff. The essential Floyd is: Meddle, Animals, Dark Side, WYWH, and Wall. Syd's most important contribution is his dominant personality and leadership that got the band to square one; his art is inferior to Waters/Gilmour.
@auralexstasy No Syd means no Pink Floyd. Without him, they wouldn't have ever come together and formed the band. If by inferior you mean there's not as much of it, then you're right. If that's not what you mean go fuck yourself.
Syd's paintings, music, and lyrics do reveal artistic genius. He had great POTENTIAL. BUT, his potential was not realized, and it is largely because his genius made his psyche vulnerable to injury. The Floyd sound loved by millions is devoid of the Barrett sound. IT IS UNFAIR TO WRITERS OF THE FLOYD MASTERPIECES TO CREDIT SYD BARRETT AS THE GENIUS BEHIND IT. Formative influence, front man, and object of later artistic material Yes. On par with later Floyd, No.
@auralexstasy as true as it may be that syd had noconnection with the more famous "pink floyd sound" he did in fact have a large impact on the theme of pink floyd's music. dark side of the moon and wish you were here BOTH were written about syd going crazy. So, no he may not have credit for most of the writing of Pink Floyd music, but he definately has to have credit for being the inspiration for virtually all floyd songs.
@auralexstasy as true as it may be that syd had noconnection with the more famous "pink floyd sound" he did in fact have a large impact on the theme of pink floyd's music. dark side of the moon and wish you were here BOTH were written about syd going crazy. @auralexstasy Understand what ya sayin, but don't ever forget that it was Syd who (even after his departure) inspired the others to go on to greater things. Without Syd The Pink Floyd would not have existed and we may have simply had a couple more r n b bands in their place. That might have been interesting, but it would have meant a world without Pink Floyd. Now theres a horrible thought ;)
Poor Rog...at 2:09 he almost breaks down in tears when he says "express my love for him" that must have been hell to see your best friend destroyed before your eyes!
They asked Jagger if Exile would have been different without the drugs and how it would have been different. He said, "that's subjective." How do you quantify that? I used a significant amount of LSD between 1968 and 1971. Many friends and acquaintances did also. LSD was indiscriminant in who it effected. Certainly a %% of "susceptible" people "flipped out" but I know of a number of strong, and charismatic people who "flipped out" too. There were alot of casualties of LSD "the cart or the horse?
I love Barrett so much because he realy walked like he was talking. He did not hypocritical about his drug use as many artists did. Barrett had his own vision on things and most people did not understand him back then. Most people painted him as a poor helpless acid addict and declared him insane or shizofrenic. They just blamed all his problems to drug use.
Does anyone else recognize that Syd and Roger invented the first Beatbox? Need we say ... The Pink Floyd fortelling the future. First rate brilliance.
syd barrett would be nothing if not work the work that roger and david developed didn't still stand the test of time so well. There's a reason why people don't list to piper like dark side, the wall and wish you were here. It's because it wasn't pink floyd yet.
i memoire of people that allows themselfs to be diferent, and to change, the world never stop why shoul human do it,LONG LIVE SID BARRETT,NO SID NO PINK FLOYDS
So incredible!! It's amazing how many ppl think that Pink Floyd- known for frat parties and number one hits- is just that. This should be a requirement to hearing any other Floyd. It is a deep story. Far beyond guitar solos and commerical b s.
Whats the first song?

@auralexstasy most of Waters inspiration came from Barret's life and personality. Stop being a jerk, lets love every member of the greatest band ever. If Waters was that great he would have done it again after he left which he didn't. A band is a band don't try to understand that.
stonedoummaynardjame 1 year ago
Waters is the key writing genius, Gilmour is the key guitar sound of Floyd. Syd is overrated. Floyd's best material does not include Syd. Their most acid stuff is their most popular stuff. The essential Floyd is: Meddle, Animals, Dark Side, WYWH, and Wall. Syd's most important contribution is his dominant personality and leadership that got the band to square one; his art is inferior to Waters/Gilmour.
auralexstasy 1 year ago
@auralexstasy No Syd means no Pink Floyd. Without him, they wouldn't have ever come together and formed the band. If by inferior you mean there's not as much of it, then you're right. If that's not what you mean go fuck yourself.

@cheeseeater09, earinsound, et al

That's your opinion. Syd is not overrated. That's my opinion. And the rest of PF would agree, otherwise this documentary would never have been made.

They just blamed all his problems to drug use.

syd barrett would be nothing if not work the work that roger and david developed didn't still stand the test of time so well. There's a reason why people don't list to piper like dark side, the wall and wish you were here. It's because it wasn't pink floyd yet.

So incredible!! It's amazing how many ppl think that Pink Floyd- known for frat parties and number one hits- is just that. This should be a requirement to hearing any other Floyd. It is a deep story. Far beyond guitar solos and commerical b s.
