i may have some bad news for you. it looks like a motor which has electromagnets to create the needed magnetic field. it would be rather hard to convert it into an efficient generator....
why don't you convert that 2 hp dc motor into a pulse motor?
you need 4 isolated poles on the dc motor to make it work (very similar to a bedini circuit). go find an old power supply from a PC and grab the huge transistors out and the capacitors, resistors etc.
that's true i know o f a good machine shop that can do that to an ac induction motor core also tap in the brushes of a common ac dc motor dis connect the outer windings put heavy bar magnets to cover the outer over lapping plates in the middle of the motor the outer iron is then magnetic spinning it with your fingers can turn it and make a small dc pulse current un buffed by a capacitor ..
the relay looking thing with for wires is a diod 12 v ac to dc converter that along with the capacitor can double the efficiency of a small home made generator a diod lets electricity go one way but not the other like a back flush valve in a water pipe 4 are in the relay looking thing look up bridge rectifier the step down trans former of an old tv or radio is capable of stepping up ac voltage if there is enough amps and volts. a small stepper motor in a v.c.r. can generate double its v

An a.c. d.c. motor like that will make a good dc generator. The wires to the brushes can be the out put while the outer windings ether independently exited with a battery or shunt fed and spun really fast with lawn mower...Go ac there much better start with. car a.c.modified alternators unregulated and 110 v induction motors and read up. its much better then a treadmill toy just google up a good 'how to' and how it works and faze cnoverter web sites . and keep the smoke in the wires.
I got an old treadmill for free, ripped out motor, drilled holes in rotor, got pvc from dumpster, made turbine blades, mounted them on the rotor, and with a few other scraps made a 100% free wind turbine... was alot of fun. it'll charge a 12v battery
the motor looks like a universal ac dc ,like in most vaccuum cleaners. if it runs on 12v dc then you will need to disconnect the brushes and connect the brush wires together outside of the motor. this will bypass the rotor. now the stator field can be energized to magnetize the rotor. use a photo flash cap, in most single use cameras at your drug store, charge the cap then connect to the stator field (careful high voltage). now if you rotate the motor you should get ac out of the stator.
dont trow away that controller! youll need it! and ps:those bearings in that pulley roller are crap they fail alot! i made every piece of that crappy treadmill but the motor came from general electric! oh ya company that made the treadmill is outta business!

2 wires will run the motor, 2 wires will serve as a tach output.. You CAN NOT use this motor as a "generator" in it's current form as it has no permanent magnets inside it.. to make it generate ANY power, you have to charge the field windings with "x" amount of voltage then spin the armature, and the wires connected to the armature brushes will generate current.. it's designed kinda like the old "Magnetless" opera speakers that had no permanent magnets in them.. Neat design. =)
You know how it works, you hold onto it telling yourself "might use this someday." Then you keep it for awhile, then throw it out. Then the next month you are looking for it because you need it. Its a paradox a lot of us live. Happens all the time to me. :=P

What crob227 is telling you is that most DC motors are also generators or can be used as generators, by turning the shaft by hand or another motor it will generate a voltage, some dc motors have a tachometer built in, my guess is the two small wires is most likely the tach and the two big wires are the motor input. Put your meter on the two big wires and give it a spin you will see a voltage being produced.
Dude you got some good stuff there motors are fun big DC ones are good generators, the power supply can be limeted down and used as a veriable lab supply good stuff bet your wife is glad to get rid this closet stuffer.
find the leads that ohm out or if you have a setting on your meter that beeps use the two wires that beep after you have the two wires hook the up to the meter on ac volts and spin the wheel and there is your voltage to put it back to dc current you need a rectifier circuit.checkout my videos

why don't you convert that 2 hp dc motor into a pulse motor?

I think you will need a rotor with magnets. You will have to cut the rotor down on a metal lathe to get clearance for the magnets.
