Wonderful! Snow bathing! I love the way these birds size up stuff and the way you can see then calculating what to do. What was he mimicking just before the end of the vid?
I have non-migratory crow as well.I did find it as a juvenile with broken leg in 2 place. Hi is doing fine and hi is 9 month old now.Never closed in a cage or any enclosure at all.Free ''as a bird'' , hi is in my garden all time with out any ideas of leaving it.I would like to see him fly away from me and I hope one day hi will find a mate or so.All I give him to eat hi eat but most of it hi is hiding all over the garden so I am worried is hi eating anything at all hahaha.Good luck
I can understand that Julian the Raven is admired BUT it's not all medieval superstition for looking unfabourably looked upon them. My house and car is trashed (vandalized) by a raven. I can't say it differently then it simply attacked my hous. NINE window bug screens on all 4 sides of the house + multiple times all rubbers, including wipers are thorn to pieces by a raven. WHY ??

Ha ha Pluto the rook (our rook) she thinks its scary with snow. But yeah sometimes she baths in it. And then he get all cold and get in and chase the cats.
Thank you XD I have to admit I adore the corvid family for their intelligence and their playful natures and feel they are looked upon so unfavourably because of medieval superstition based on their dining habits. It's a shame that people don't understand such an intelligent beautiful family. You really are lucky to have a fantastic raven like Julian. Keep up the good work
@comandermalander456 We are licensed wildlife rehabilitators with a special purpose permit to keep non-releasable birds for educational purposes only. It is illegal for anyone without the proper permits to possess any type of migratory bird.
After volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation centre in West Yorkshire, England I ended up taking on the care of several disabled crows and when we had a great deal of snow this winter I witnessed this same behaviour in my crows but especially in an imprint called Hoppy. I was wondering if there was a reason for this behavior or if it has any significance? It reminds me of the bathing habits as they flutter their wings.
@DWVHYDE I think they do it just because they can. In my opinion intelligence and play go hand in hand. The more intelligent the bird the more it enjoys play.
Wow that raven has a very deep voice... when you asked him "whats up" I think he said "gloves" then he repeated whats up twice and went to the gloves... clever creatures :)
In my neighborhood, big crows are the "bosses." That is, until a lone raven wanders by. Then, they all keep a distance and "yell" at him 'til he's eaten & leaves. My two pet parrots like watching the crows, but really "alert" when they hear that raven!
Though the raven does it as natural behavior, to my knowledge. It's about getting rid of parasites. Ofcourse this is probably one of the cleanest ravens around, but it's still behavior it has. If there was water, it would probably use water instead.
@Andreazor Ravens do do this as part of their behavior not only to get rid of parasites but also just because they like to play in the snow. Julian is given a fresh bath pan everyday which he uses to bathe.
Haha, how funny! He actually really is playing!I love watching him roll in it and burrow in it.Had he never seen snow before?

@wordreet He is saying 'What's up". A phrase we said to him all the time when we fed or cleaned him. One day he answered back.

If you don't stop throwing snowballs in his direction, you'll be in trouble soon.
Never forget, they're smarter than you think, and learn fast. xD

HA, I was actually about to say that "ravens are some of the more majestic birds in the world," but noticed that you beat me to it.
I, for some reason, tend to forget just how large ravens often are.
