From what I can gather, the J-PAC generates key presses and releases on a computer as you press/release switches connected to the J-PAC (I have the I-PAC, and presume that the J-PAC is similar in this respect). If so, then simply run my StepMania Player program and click "Realtime Light Control", and follow the instructions on the new window to set the keys (keycodes) which it responds to to the keys which the J-PAC emulates. Once configured, you don't have to keep my program on top.
Yes, I do (it is actually in progress). Note that it no longer uses a microcontroller, but a parallel port (both faster and cheaper).
For me, this must have cost around 30-35 GBP, but it's hard for me to say how much it will cost other people, because there is such a large variety of places available to buy the items from.
can you make a kind of a playlist with that application too? i mean that you dont have to browse every single file and click 'play simfile' after every song. that would be cool!
My program can start playing when you press a specific key on the keyboard (even when StepMania has focus), so if you synchro-start it when the gameplay on StepMania starts, they'll stay in sync. StepMania (version 3.9 Plus) can control the lights via parallel itself; however, it only flashes _all_ lights for when _any_ note is pressed. The only time they're lit individually is during game menus. You can see this on my "Critical Judgement" video - I had SM controlling the lights directly there.
Yes, I made the program. I'll put it available for download in a few minutes (should be up within an hour) and there'll be a link in the video description. However, my program can also control lights via parallel, which I recommend a lot more because the SSC-32 struggles to turn outputs on and off quickly enough sometimes (it has a time resolution of only roughly 25 millisecs). I'm making a tutorial video for how to make the lights (by parallel) and to use the program. ;)
cool. thanx. but.. umm.. i like making this stuff too. i was wondering also, where your inteligence came from? ya'know, so i may broaden my knoledge and sharpen it a bit more?
Last night I added the ability to let you simply press your arrow keys (you can configure the controls if you don't use the arrow keys) to control the lights "live", without a simfile. That works when other programs such as StepMania have focus too. I've updated my lights since this video to work by parallel (LPT), so that, if you exit my program and add the SM lights driver, StepMania itself can actually control the lights (SM's programmed to flash all at once though, except for in menus -_-).
I'm currently working on a tutorial video for making the lights (I'll try to included recommended places to buy parts from). The video will explain how to use the stuff too, and it's always going to be freeware. ;)
Yes, that's right. Well, as I've been coding it so far, it will be hard to make only one type of note strobe while other types don't. This is mainly because it's the same program which controlled the servos to make the computer "play" StepMania in my earlier video.
However, as I've been coding new parts, I've come to realize that the way I'm doing it is very inefficient, so I'm gonna change large amounts of code soon. I'll add strobe (and other) options too before I release it to the public. ;)
Dude, you really have to put up a tutorial and links to parts availability. This is really sick, and will produce an awesome case mod that ill incorporate this into. Job well done.
I will release the program when I've finished adding the ability to configure things - what pins on the microcontroller are connected to what light, what COM port the microcontroller is connected to, etc.
Also, as I said replying to your comment on my "Native Faith" video, SM uses the parallel port instead, so if I could get my program to use parallel (LPT) as an alternative to serial (COM) then the lights which you build will be compatible with both programs.
Hey, I could probably play that (except for the ending). I'll record a video of the lights doing it though (and if I manage, might as well do one of me playing it).
One it really goes insane with is called "Vertex BETA vROFL" (v=4jl91FtKWoA). Unfortunately, 30 FPS isn't enough to cover capture most of the flickering, as it looks like to the human eye, but I know someone who'll probably let me borrow their 60 FPS camera, so I can then provide a high FPS download link. ;P
Just to let you know, I'm currently uploading a 2nd video of these lights, now in a box, recorded from 4 different angles. Although the song's none of those we mentioned just now, its difficulty is still 15, and since it's at night, it looks crazier. I'll link to it from this one by posting it as a video response. It should be up within an hour, as long as my internet connection keeps working. ;)
I think it would be really great if you could modify your program to send signals through the parallel port like Stepmania does for the lighting and release it. The reason being that it's cheaper to wire it by yourself with a few transistors than buying a microcontroller for DIY. Especially if you plan on making a guide. Not to mention the lights would be compatible with stepmania itself as well.
It's funny you should mention that, because I modded my lights to work with StepMania via parallel about 2 days ago... and was a little disappointed at how SM only flashes all at lights once.
I'm currently clueless as to how I'll go about sending data through the parallel port, so I'll have to do a bit of research before I can try programming it. Once I know how to, though, it shouldn't be hard to modify the code. I'll probably make it an option of using parallel (LPT, default) or serial (COM).
You that are so good with computers, why are you still stuck in the 90's in computer technology? lol. Well for all I know you have a super-high-tech computer with liquid nitrogen cooling but you just use this comp for fun
If you're referring to the Windows 9x-style theme, it's just the "Windows Classic" theme on Windows XP Home. I use it because I rather my computer spends more time doing what I tell it to, using more of its full hardware potential, rather than trying to look gimicky and smooth.
The comp is better than the theme lets on, but it's not so "super-high-tech", heh. 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, and a GeForce 7900GTX OC are its strong points. Oh, and there's a big 20cm fan, but no liquid nitrogen. ;P
The first song's from the 4th Touhou SM pack and the second song's from the 1st Touhou SM pack. I'm putting the links in the video description now (can't believe I forgot - I've done it with every other SM-related video so far)
If the cords for the lights were longer you could make stepping pads and have a game from that. O.o Although, there is alot of those games out, but yours could be like the first japanese or chinese or korean or wherever the song is from..
The last song goes by the long (translated) title of "Marisa stole the precious thing" (and it's Japanese), and it's by IOSYS, a group who are well-known for their crazy remixes such as this, although they do produce a large range of other styles of music. ;)
Yeah, I'd like to make some extension leads for the lights, and a stepping pad (although I've never played on one before, so it'd probably take quite a while for me to get used to it =/).
Thanks. Welll, yeah, now I know the basic circuits, I could simply up the number of lights (maybe have several on one circuit too, so I could have several lights around the left of my room for one direction, the front of my room for another, etc). =D
that is seriously neat, but why didnt u play that really long and complicated (to play on stepmania) piano song which is one of the variations of some touhou song?
Thanks, but damn, I completely forgot about that one! "Piano Variation for Remilia Scarlet", I think is what you're thinking of, and yeah, it's pretty complex, but there are still more ridiculous ones (such as "Vertex" - how a human hand could possibly move up and down 200 times a second, I don't know).
What do you mean by the "light charts"? As long as that info is stored in the SM file, I could change my program to be able to do that too (or instead).

So these are just hooked up to a servo controller and a program that tells which assigned light to light up per step arrow?
