Don't watch this film! Nim died of an heart attack after spending years living as a human, his mother dumped him and after a few years of living with other humans Nim ended up living with chimps like he did when he was born however, Nim saw himself as a human when asked to put photos of chimps and humans seperate he put his photo in the human pile. So when he was with other chimps he'd sign 'out' to humans viewing him in cramped cages. He was scared before he died, that caused him to die!

project nim is insightful, but Nim was not the first non-human animal to learn out language, no was it scientifically sound in any way, as the interviewees said so themselves.

Washoe was heavily documented and reliable in science. No doubt Nim was enlightening, but trying to sell this as the first animal to speak our language is bullshit. Bunch of hippies with no scientific integrity. Then again, that probably made it more fun for the "researchers"

The truth is, they never actually taught language to Nim (sarcastically named Nim Chimsky after linguist Noam Chomsky who said language was uniquely human). This is a classic case of researchers getting too close to their subject, and seeing what they expect to see (Experimenter Bias). Read Michael Shermer's review of this research on his Skeptic website. Apes can learn to mimic and to make connections through Operant Conditioning, but this isn't true language like humans use.
