@Daveycr that was the point of the film, man.. that the experiment didn't provide sufficient results, and Nim was subjected to a life of pain and solitude. It's not meant to be like, "wow, these scientists really made a difference in the world".. why do you think one of the closing lines was "Chimps are very forgiving animals"? Psh.
@Daveycr in fact, the director made the main scientist Herb look like somewhat of a douchebag by the end of the film, showing that he only visited Nim once for a photoshoot and then never saw him again.
@collettaification More than 'somewhat' I'd say. Herb looked like he couldn't keep his dick in his pants, never worried about the obvious shit that was gunna blow-up in his face 2 seconds later and talked like a complete asshole. How women found this guy smart or fuckable is way beyond me...
I got half way through this and I'd had enough of the creepy slut who wanted the fuck the baby monkey. What the hell is wrong with her? A pedophile for primates.
@TheSWTORMMO - "ignorant fool"? So there is another type of fool is there? Thanks for sharing you tautological nitwit now go back to your video games.
Poor Nim.. :'( makes me sad that we can't even treat our family (great ape family) with respect and dignity....why do we deserve to dominate the planet??? We can't take care of it.
so they communicated with another species? Was it "I'm hungry" type stuff or "hi my name chris and I hate wearing shows"? I think we are closely related to chimps but a chimp and human are about as close as dogs are to cats when it comes down to it.
@logick0 It was hardly an experiment they tried to "copy". They simple furthered understanding and research by attempting to iron out methodological flaws in previous research studies regarding chimps and language. For something more up to date, search for Kanzi the Bonobo.
To take monkey and make him to live like human is anhuman. In west africa every family take monkey for fun. It is look like you have child, but under 5th. And after all it is no human nor monkey. Sad!!
Don't watch this film! Nim died of an heart attack after spending years living as a human, his mother dumped him and after a few years of living with other humans Nim ended up living with chimps like he did when he was born however, Nim saw himself as a human when asked to put photos of chimps and humans seperate he put his photo in the human pile. So when he was with other chimps he'd sign 'out' to humans viewing him in cramped cages. He was scared before he died, that caused him to die!
@Megann2k10 Have you seen this film? I think for people to understand the story they should watch the film. This film only tries to expose the story and to a certain degree condemn what happened. If anything this film could bring awareness to people, hence I believe that they should watch it.
I don't mind them attempting to do what they did but do not call it science. It was pseudo science if anything born out of human nature's often misguided inclination to anthropomorphize anything we find mildly reflective in the animal kingdom from a hamster to a dog. Personally I think humans do this to avoid feeling alone in the universe and to feed an insatiable desire to empathize.
The project concluded that he did not in fact understand language, he knew certain signs which for him garnered certain outcomes, which was demonstrated when after Nim was in a zoo and would ask for things with sign language all other chimps then would use the sign to get the same thing, such as food.
"He loved alchol and driving fast in cars : D It was the 70's hahah!... I've never had a better time except for maybe a Greatful Dead show" <---- These are our "Scientists"?? And you stupid bastards want to hand them the keys to our economy because the "Scientists" think humans control the temperature of the planet? Americans are so stupid. We deserve to parish.

@KingDingaLing090 Damn, of course i know what sarcastic means. I just read your comment and it was so ridiculous and immature i thought you were being sarcastic. That's all.

If you want to have a little debate on the hoax called "global warming" I will be happy to humiliate you in front of all your loser friends. Bring it the fuck on pussy.
@KingDingaLing090 you claim that the people who did this project aren't scientists because they're hippies. What they were doing was they were allowing themselves to FEEL how they were or were not becoming attached to the chimp, such as whether they loved it as a pet, an almost human friend, or none of the above. The experienced these emotions, recorded them and examined them. When trying to find out how closely linked the chimp and human species are, what the hell else would a scientist do?
@bradyisbeast12 They used an endagered wild animal like a toy and gave him booze and weed until he had a heart attack. Nothing they were doing was scientic they didnt even record their observations. You are a fucking STOOGE who didnt even read the history on Nim Chimpsky you little fucker.
We deserve to parish? Oh, I forget. Your type of ranting tripe shows you just learned to type. You obviously haven't seen this because your criticism, hilariously, aims the same argument ( but at the wrong subject) that the movie ITSELF makes.
@bradyisbeast12 : Ignorance like disbelieving the Global Warming BS hype by Al Bore and the Demwits. Is that the ignorance of which you speak. Do tell.
@ThePerfectashlar disbelieving global warming is a perfect example of stubborn ignorance vs. scientific facts. yeah, that's the ignorance I'm talking about
project nim is insightful, but Nim was not the first non-human animal to learn out language, no was it scientifically sound in any way, as the interviewees said so themselves.
Washoe was heavily documented and reliable in science. No doubt Nim was enlightening, but trying to sell this as the first animal to speak our language is bullshit. Bunch of hippies with no scientific integrity. Then again, that probably made it more fun for the "researchers"
The truth is, they never actually taught language to Nim (sarcastically named Nim Chimsky after linguist Noam Chomsky who said language was uniquely human). This is a classic case of researchers getting too close to their subject, and seeing what they expect to see (Experimenter Bias). Read Michael Shermer's review of this research on his Skeptic website. Apes can learn to mimic and to make connections through Operant Conditioning, but this isn't true language like humans use.

hmmm, i don't hate this. i just don't feel comfortable when humans want to understand species, why don't learn their language, instead of teaching them our ways? it just doesn't feel the right way
And then they shipped Nim off to a pharmaceutical testing company when they were finished.....
