Blade Runner turns 30 this year (2012). It is an amazing box set. They gave it a good treatment. I suppose it stands to reason since the movie has continued to grow in stature as the greatest science fiction film ever released. Yes - it even tops 2001: A Space Odyssey in some 'greatest' lists. I saw the film in theaters in the summer of 1982 and I thought it was destined for high esteem - yes, even then. I even kept the movie mag I got at the theater you pick up when you get your ticket.
@Zaranyzerak I was wondering whether you know if the Theatrical edition of Blade Runner has been altered in someway with CGI? I mean like removal of wires or matte lines? I hope not.
@IsaacBTTF No, the only version that has been altered in that way is the Final Cut. The earlier cuts are true to their original presentations, warts and all.
Hey Z , fans of the videos, i got blade runner last christmas as a present and not knowing what to expect, i loved it straight away. Although i don't mind the two disc, i would LOVE to get the briefcase, would you recommend it?
You being a Blade Runner fan, what would you call a Blade Runner lover? In the same way as star trek fans are called Trekkies. Maybe they are known as simply Blade Runners, or Replicants, perhaps bladeys...What do you think?
Does this have more content than the Ultimate Collector's Edition? I'm looking to buy one of the Blue Rays but I don't know which has the best of both quality and quantity.
@mrchiledonut I have no idea what the Ultimate Collectors Edition has, I've never heard of it. I've never seen any edition of Blade Runner that has more content than this set. There was a Special Edition boxe set of Blade Runner released a few years ago, but it was just the Director's Cut (barebones, no extras) with some lobby cards and a lithograph film frame. This edition gives you FIVE cuts of the film, and hours upon hours of extras that have never been released in any other edition.
You never really showed the number of the set you have. I own the standard DVD briefcase and was waiting to see what number your set was. I guess a lower number means it has a higher value. Well, not really a higher value, but I guess it's more collectible. Mine is 009097/ 103,000.
@eyebone69 That kind of thing has never really been important to me. As long as I have the set, I don't really care what number it is. They're all identical. That said, my is 4917/10,000.
I love your review, it's a shame I'm in the UK, I did get the Region 2 set, it has everything your edition has except obviously the briefcase, and doesn't have the origami and the car :( but can't complain as it has all the discs and other bits :D
You can watch the Theatrical Version of Blade Runner on Netflix via Stream :) BTW Thank you for the review man, I just became a fan of Blade Runner and it has inspire me so much when it comes to film-making and I consider it as my all time favorite Sci-fi film! Star Wars and Minority Report we're close but this film is just an instant classic. Thanks Again! :)
The film worth a watch? silly question, cos I still haven't, need to get my hands on it, too bad I can't pick this amazing bundle up due to it being region 1 i guess, but wow, that's got to be one fun few hours of watching
@SassiTheKitty While the collector's set is region 1, there's a Region 2 set of just the 5 discs that has all the disc-based content. Between the 5 cuts of the movie and the MOUNTAIN of extras, it's definitely got a lot to keep you busy! I envy you having never seen it before, you're in for a treat! :)
@Zaranyzerak Ah, cool, 'fraid I didn't get the collection like this, but ah well, I did manage to pick up the director's cut today cheap, might watch it some time in the week, will let you know how I got on with it :)
@Zaranyzerak I have the Region 2 5-disc Collector's Box Set, and I love it. It definitely is just like the DVD-set in your cool Briefcase set, (despite being a R2 release), without the briefcase and the other extras thet come with it. I bought it over buying the Final Cut on DVD, because it has all the different cuts(including the final cut, and the workprint). The only other Blade Runner set I have is an old Director's Cut on VHS, which was the only cut I had seen before buying the 5-disc set.
@wolfeman323232 Yep, the DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray versions were all limited, with their own numbering. 34 bucks is a very good deal, these originally went for almost 100.
@Zaranyzerak SWEET i only had 20 at the moment i saw it, and its been at the same store for years so il just get the cash and snag it before someone else dose.
@CavalierXVI I'm pretty sure this was just a Region 1 set. Plus it's been out of print for a while, so that might be why it's getting harder to find. You'd likely have to import it from a U.S. dealer.
@ghostspider I've got that too. Didn't see much point in getting the briefcase edition twice. So I have this edition for the swag, and the Blu-ray for the picture/sound quality. Disc-wise, you're not missing anything with that Blu-ray. Just the fancy packaging.
@charmander4533 Whatever. Every second of my videos has a reason for being there, if only being a part of my personal style or expressing some personal opinion or just being randomly silly for the sake of entertainment. Don't like it? Don't watch. Thanks.
@dpImagine It would take far too long to list every difference, there's quite a bit. But in short - alternate music in several scenes, different opening sequence, several alternate takes and shots throughout, some new scenes, some altered scenes, overall the MOST different cut of all 5 versions. Very interesting to see if you're a fan of the movie.
@Zaranyzerak Thank you for the summery of differences. That's exactly what I wanted to know and it answers my question perfectly. I will have to finish watching the Theatrical version then watch the Work print so I can appreciate the differences and what the outers version as well!
@dvdmike007 Interesting, all I know is I never saw anything but the International cut out here. I only had the one Laserdisc edition (talking about the pre-Director's Cut era - OF COURSE I got that one too when it came out), as it was the best one out there bar none for a loooonggg time. Good to know the original cut WAS available in some form. Was it a U.S. release? Or Japanese? Or U.K.?
@ArabDragonArtist Why would the DVD version be better? Of course the Blu-ray is better, it's high definition versus the standard definition of the DVD. I have both. I received the DVD version of the briefcase set as a gift, several months before I got my PS3. I later purchased the Blu-ray version to have the movies in the best possible quality, and kept the briefcase set for the collector's packaging and swag.
I Watched this, and Jumped On Amazon to see If Its there. Got the HD-DVD collectors edition Briefcase For Twenty Seven dollars. I am thinking I got one hell of a deal. Granted I don't have a HD-DVD player. I also got John Carpenters The Thing In HD-DVD Collectors as well a while ago. I'm feeling faint, am so happy you showed this.
@320storm I did, but sold it a while back for the Blu-ray edition. Annetta has the deluxe collector's set of the Blu-ray. I did a review of it somewhere...check the Multimedia Chronicles Master Index on my website, it should be listed there in the Blu-ray section.
@1990SuperGeek If that was me watching it for a literature class, i would have scored an A++++++++++ lol... Its easy to study when you are interest immensely in the subject matter :) how did you go with it anyway?
NIce vid bro i'm a big fan of blade runner i had a old vhs i used until it gave up lol. I like how you take your time to explain the little things and how you add your own little flavor to it keep it up man.
That would cost me the same, if not more, than the set I have. Why would I re-buy the set just to have the Blu-ray logo on it? The contents are exactly the same. Plus I like the packaging on the DVD version. I plan to keep both, as I am an OBSESSIVE Blade Runner fan and they are BOTH major collectibles for someone like me. Just poke around amazon or ebay, I'm sure you can find it out there somewhere.
Who's nervous? There's no point complaining to me about the length, that should be obvious from the description. I don't cater to the ADD Generation. And I put a LOT more into my vids than simply describing the contents of a box, often filling out the reviews with personal stories and anecdotes. Blade Runner happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies so I have a LOT to say about it. Don't like it? Don't watch it. Simple as that.
marialfabeta: Piss off. If it's SO hard to pay attention for 25 minutes, then don't bother. Z works hard on his videos, and he doesn't need douchebags like you complaining because he's telling people who are actually INTERESTED, EVERYTHING they need to know. Don't like it, go watch an amateurs two minute review, while we'll stick around here and listen to someone who knows EXACTLY what he's talking about.
I just watched the deleted scenes archive yesterday on disc 4, and I have too say that the voiceover narration used for it, the takes of Harrison Ford that never made it into the movie, were considerably better than the ones that actually made it into the movie! Harrison sounded less boring, and it wasn't so badly written. Why did they scrap the clearly better narration.
And here's a final cut enhancement so small that I bet not even a crazy blade runner fan like you noticed. In the very first shot of the city titled the "hades lanscape" the smokestacks that shoot fire also have lights on them. In all but the final cut version, the lights simply "flashed" on when fire shoots out of them, but in the final cut they "fade" on and are also more properly synced with the fire.
Oooh, nifty! I'll actually be watching Blade Runer again either tonight or tomorrow for a review video I'm doing, so I'll keep an eye out for that one! :)
So do I, Blade Runner is actually not one of my all time favorites, but if there's anything that I admire about it, it's those damn amazing special effects! Oh, and the music too, that kicks ass! I still like Blade Runner though, I just don't love it like some people
Wait, you said that the Dang. Days doc. goes into detail about the making of the directors cut, and the problems in making the F Cut. I just got done watching the whole thing yesterday. There was only a brief mention about the Directors Cut by Hampton Fancher, and didly squat about the F Cut. I only have the 2 disc edition which has only the F Cut and dang. days. Either the 2 disc has a cut down doc. or you were mistaken which is fine, everybody makes mistakes, I'm just confused is all :)
Ah, my bad - I might have been a bit mixed up - I had just finished watching EVERYTHING form the entire 5-disc set, which DOES have some docs that are specific to the individual versions - including a huge featurette about the Final Cut. My bad! Dangerous Days is still awesome, though - by far the most in-depth doc about the movie ever made! :)
Ridley Scott especially is just brilliant with his camera work. Watching any one of his movies is just a sin. Alien, Gladiator, Americna Gangster, Body of Lies, Legend, are all ugly without widescreen. I am officially done yaping away. Please carry on.
You know what I hate? The older dvd releases were likely double sided. One side is Full Screen, the other side is Widescreen. Why in the holy mother of fuck would someone watch the full screen side, when seeing the "actual good version" of the movie is just a flip away. Full (fool) Screen sucks balls! I believe the original 1997 Blade Runner dvd was like this. Blade Runner especially blows in Full Screen!
Oh, you're preaching to the choir man! ESPECIALLY with something like Blade Runner. In the FOOLscreen version you're literally missing darn near HALF the picture, not to mention ruining the beautiful shot composition. I actually have a video on my profile page under my Favorites that compares the fullscreen and widescreen versions of Blade Runner. Thank god widescreen is finally becoming the new "fullscreen" :)
jerry perenchio! what a hardhead! but finally we got served and we got served brilliant! wb is sometimes bitchy like hell, but with ridley scott's fight they agreed it was time to give in!
it's told that there is less than one percent of differcence in dvd to blue ray! i have the dvd and it jus blew me away, so how can the blue ray be better! this is one of he best science fiction movies ever! this is the dvd in my colletion i am most proud of!
1 percent? Wow. Whoever told you that is talking out of their ass. SD = 720x480 resolution. HD = 1920x1080 resolution. Do the math! With something like Blade Runner especially, with all the intricate detail in the model work and such, you REALLY see the difference. I'll be posting some screenshot comparisons in my HD Rants series in the near future, hopefully including some shots from Blade Runner.
well, bad information! but i don't mind yet, still don't have blue ray, but the blue ray disc is fairly cheap to get now via amazon, so when i get a blue ray player blade runner will be the first blue ray dvd i buy! so well thanks anyway! but actually who cares, in whatever form this movie comes, it will always be brilliant!:)
You must be aware that the final cut fixed pretty much every visual blunder in the movie right? No more obvious Zhora double and no more strings on the police spinners. Ridley Scott did what George Lucas couldn't. He touched it up, without being overly intrusive. Ridley Scott FTW!
Oh, I am most definitely aware - there's a 3 hours documentary about the film, and some featurettes specifically about the FInal Cut. Also being intimately famliar with the International and Director's Cut versions, I spotted a lot of the fixes on my own too. :) And yes, Ridley did it RIGHT!
How were you able to get 24mins of video , I didn't think it was possible ? You know, the Blue-ray edition is amazing, I was blown away, its just some incrediable footage, and the quality of the movie was enhanced, which is just great. But, the price was a let down over here in my country, it was so high as 120 Dollars, it's pretty high. I loved your review on the Laser disk, I learned a lot, thanks !
I have a Director's Account that dates back to early 2006, and I'm a YouTube Partner. I haven't had to deal with the time limit for a looooonnnggg time. :)
Yeah, I've heard that outside of North America the prices can be a bit crazy sometimes...
This briefcase was not available in Europe. The only thing we got here were the 2-disk special edition and the 5-disk ultimate collector's edition + the pictures that is shown here.
Wow the set looks amazing, I can see why this DVD won awards. Watching your video really makes me want to watch the film. I'll have to borrow it off a friend sometime.
If you don't already have it and you love the movie as much as I do, it's well worth getting. If you've alreayd got the 5-disc Blu-ray set, though, it's really a matter of how much the extra swag is worth to you. The disc contents are exactly the same (except the Blu-ray has all 5 versions in HD, of course)
What exacly is the Workprint? Is it a version with all production sound, or a version with every scene ever shot, nothing cut out? Can someone clarify?
The Workprint is just tha t- a workprint. It's an early cut of the film. Which means a lot of the music is temp tracks, there are some shots and scenes that didn't make ANY cut of the film, different takes, etc. Just generally a rough cut of the film before it was all "polished" for the final versions. There's quite a few differences between the Workprint and the various final versions.
The International Cut is basically the same as the theatrical cut, except it has a few additional bits of violence and gore that weren't in the theatrical version (such as seeing Roy's thumbs go into Tyrell's eyes and blood shoots outs, and we actually see the nail go THROUGH Roy's hand). Otherwise they're both pretty much identical, narration and all. Those gory clips were added back in for the Final Cut.
It does. This voice-over was removed in later versions of the movie, which is very unfortunate because I really like it. It reminds me of those old detective movies.
Mine is the final cut, but I have never seen the 1992 so-called directors cut. But I have seen the theatrical cut once on TV. A far inferior version that was. I actually don't own the briefcase edition, just the 2-disc final cut with the dangerous days doc. No plans on getting the briefcase since the 2-disc comes with the best parts of the briefcase edition. I'm also not the biggest Blade Runner fan, I think it's OK, but really odd and depressing.
Yeah, I lean toward the Final Cut as well. I have a soft spot for the International cut simply because it was the first version I ever saw, and it was the ONLY version on video for a very long time. But as far as being the best interpretation of the story, with all of the ambiguity and openness to interpretation intact, it's the Final Cut every time.
I'd say check out the Final Cut first, since it's Ridley's definitive version. After that, have fun exploring all the rest of 'em! If you want a HUGE contrast between theFinal Cut and the next one you check out, I suggest the International or Theatrical version next - they're the versions with the voiceover narration (and numerous other changes).
I have to respectfully disagree with you on that. I didn't see Blade Runner until the 'Director's Cut' was the *only* edition available. By the time Dekker was chasing the first replicant, I was lost. I couldn't understand the plot at all and ended up hating the movie. Later, when I saw the theatrical edition with the voice-overs everything finally made sense!
The Final Cut lacks the absolutely vital plot exposition. Watch it after you understand what's going on- it will be *much* better.
I don't think the exposition provided by the narration is vital at all. If anything, I find it condescending - telling me things that I could figure out for myself through the actions and dialogue of the characters.
The main reason most consider the Final Cut and Director's Cut to be superior is that it DOESN'T explain everything - it leaves many things open to interpretation, which it how it was MEANT to be. Certain things are meant to be ambiguous, fo rthe viewer to interpret his.herself.
I've got nothing against ambiguity and leaving things for the viewer to interpret. Heck, I love Serial Experiment: Lain.
The problem with the Director's Cut was that it was *so* obtuse that for someone like me, who didn't have *any* familiarity with the story, I couldn't even begin the process of self-interpretation.
Fair enough, but it's really not a complicated story - Guy hunts down rogue replicants. Some philosophical musings about the nature of life and death. The suggestion through visual clues that the protagonist is himself a replicant.
A large chunk of that is actually LOST with the narrated version, which simply explains things away (and often in ways that go against what the original intent was) and eliminates much of the ambiguity in ways that lessen the overall impact of the film.
For example, without the explanation of the significance of the photos in the narration, there's no reason for the viewer to suspect that the snake girl is a replicant before Dekker shoots her (and nothing until *much* later in the movie to back up his assertion of that fact to the bystanders.) As a BR virgin, I just found the actions and dialogue of the characters utterly incomprehensible- especially the 'tears in the rain' scene.
Maybe FC is better for a newcomer than DC- I'm unable to judge.
Well, the identity of all the replicants is shown in the scene where Deckard gets his assignment.
As for the photos, the significance of photos to replicants is illustrated twice - first when Leon goes back to his apartment to get his photos, and again when Deckard is talking to Tyrell about the significance of memories. Photos are also a vital piece of evidence in favor of Deckard being a replicant - his apartment is littered with photos, continuing the theme. (cont'd)
All of which is conveyed visually, no need for narration explaining it.
The point is, ALL the clues are there visually, it was never intended to be narrated. The narration was added at the insistence of the studio. It's a film that invites multiple viewings to form your own analysis and spot the clues along the way. But they're definitely all there!
And yes, you just happened to catch me when I'm checking my messages. :)
I guess it really comes down to matters of taste. For me, the DC felt awkwardly paced and confused. While it may have required repeat viewing in order to pick up on all the clues, the initial viewing was sufficiently off-putting that it really didn't *invite* a repeat viewing.
Someone else might very well have viewed it as intriguing and gone back to watch it multiple times.
I'm going to have to re-watch the FC with that in mind- maybe it does a better job.
Normally there is - unless you've got a Director's Account that dates back to 2006, or become a YouTube Partner. In my case, I've got both so I don't have the time limit.

Good to know the original cut WAS available in some form. Was it a U.S. release? Or Japanese? Or U.K.?

is the dvd version better than blu-ray. Can you Answer my question?
ArabDragonArtist 1 year ago
@ArabDragonArtist Why would the DVD version be better? Of course the Blu-ray is better, it's high definition versus the standard definition of the DVD. I have both. I received the DVD version of the briefcase set as a gift, several months before I got my PS3. I later purchased the Blu-ray version to have the movies in the best possible quality, and kept the briefcase set for the collector's packaging and swag.

TheCartoonman13 2 years ago
That would cost me the same, if not more, than the set I have. Why would I re-buy the set just to have the Blu-ray logo on it? The contents are exactly the same. Plus I like the packaging on the DVD version. I plan to keep both, as I am an OBSESSIVE Blade Runner fan and they are BOTH major collectibles for someone like me. Just poke around amazon or ebay, I'm sure you can find it out there somewhere.

marialfabeta 2 years ago
Who's nervous? There's no point complaining to me about the length, that should be obvious from the description. I don't cater to the ADD Generation. And I put a LOT more into my vids than simply describing the contents of a box, often filling out the reviews with personal stories and anecdotes. Blade Runner happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies so I have a LOT to say about it. Don't like it? Don't watch it. Simple as that.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
marialfabeta: Piss off.

Why did they scrap the clearly better narration.

masseffect6789 2 years ago
And here's a final cut enhancement so small that I bet not even a crazy blade runner fan like you noticed. In the very first shot of the city titled the "hades lanscape" the smokestacks that shoot fire also have lights on them. In all but the final cut version, the lights simply "flashed" on when fire shoots out of them, but in the final cut they "fade" on and are also more properly synced with the fire.
Just a fun fact that I noticed by accident :)

Oooh, nifty! I'll actually be watching Blade Runer again either tonight or tomorrow for a review video I'm doing, so I'll keep an eye out for that one! :)

Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
So do I, Blade Runner is actually not one of my all time favorites, but if there's anything that I admire about it, it's those damn amazing special effects! Oh, and the music too, that kicks ass! I still like Blade Runner though, I just don't love it like some people
AVGN92 2 years ago
Wait, you said that the Dang. Days doc. goes into detail about the making of the directors cut, and the problems in making the F Cut. I just got done watching the whole thing yesterday. There was only a brief mention about the Directors Cut by Hampton Fancher, and didly squat about the F Cut. I only have the 2 disc edition which has only the F Cut and dang. days. Either the 2 disc has a cut down doc. or you were mistaken which is fine, everybody makes mistakes, I'm just confused is all :)
AVGN92 2 years ago
Ah, my bad - I might have been a bit mixed up - I had just finished watching EVERYTHING form the entire 5-disc set, which DOES have some docs that are specific to the individual versions - including a huge featurette about the Final Cut. My bad! Dangerous Days is still awesome, though - by far the most in-depth doc about the movie ever made! :)
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Agreed, dangerous days still kicks ass! Thanks for clearing that up

Sorry *Watching any one of his movies in "full screen" is a sin. Not watching one of his movies! Also mispelled American. NOW, I am done yapping!
TheDarthPotato 2 years ago
Ridley Scott especially is just brilliant with his camera work. Watching any one of his movies is just a sin. Alien, Gladiator, Americna Gangster, Body of Lies, Legend, are all ugly without widescreen. I am officially done yaping away. Please carry on.
TheDarthPotato 2 years ago
You know what I hate? The older dvd releases were likely double sided. One side is Full Screen, the other side is Widescreen. Why in the holy mother of fuck would someone watch the full screen side, when seeing the "actual good version" of the movie is just a flip away. Full (fool) Screen sucks balls! I believe the original 1997 Blade Runner dvd was like this. Blade Runner especially blows in Full Screen!
TheDarthPotato 2 years ago
Oh, you're preaching to the choir man! ESPECIALLY with something like Blade Runner. In the FOOLscreen version you're literally missing darn near HALF the picture, not to mention ruining the beautiful shot composition. I actually have a video on my profile page under my Favorites that compares the fullscreen and widescreen versions of Blade Runner. Thank god widescreen is finally becoming the new "fullscreen" :)

MrCarnivour 2 years ago
1 percent?
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
well, bad information! but i don't mind yet, still don't have blue ray, but the blue ray disc is fairly cheap to get now via amazon, so when i get a blue ray player blade runner will be the first blue ray dvd i buy! so well thanks anyway! but actually who cares, in whatever form this movie comes, it will always be brilliant!:)

You must be aware that the final cut fixed pretty much every visual blunder in the movie right? No more obvious Zhora double and no more strings on the police spinners. Ridley Scott did what George Lucas couldn't. He touched it up, without being overly intrusive. Ridley Scott FTW!
FilmCrazy92 2 years ago
Oh, I am most definitely aware - there's a 3 hours documentary about the film, and some featurettes specifically about the FInal Cut. Also being intimately famliar with the International and Director's Cut versions, I spotted a lot of the fixes on my own too. :) And yes, Ridley did it RIGHT!
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
How were you able to get 24mins of video , I didn't think it was possible ? You know, the Blue-ray edition is amazing, I was blown away, its just some incrediable footage, and the quality of the movie was enhanced, which is just great. But, the price was a let down over here in my country, it was so high as 120 Dollars, it's pretty high. I loved your review on the Laser disk, I learned a lot, thanks !

AmericanNohbuddy 2 years ago
If you don't already have it and you love the movie as much as I do, it's well worth getting. If you've alreayd got the 5-disc Blu-ray set, though, it's really a matter of how much the extra swag is worth to you. The disc contents are exactly the same (except the Blu-ray has all 5 versions in HD, of course)
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Ah ok. Thanks for the info.

and one more thing-
What exacly is the Workprint? Is it a version with all production sound, or a version with every scene ever shot, nothing cut out? Can someone clarify?
creatingausernamesux 2 years ago
The Workprint is just tha t- a workprint. It's an early cut of the film. Which means a lot of the music is temp tracks, there are some shots and scenes that didn't make ANY cut of the film, different takes, etc. Just generally a rough cut of the film before it was all "polished" for the final versions. There's quite a few differences between the Workprint and the various final versions.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Does the Iinternational Cut have Harrison's voice over and the Happy Ending? Or is that only the Theatrical Cut?
creatingausernamesux 2 years ago
The International Cut is basically the same as the theatrical cut, except it has a few additional bits of violence and gore that weren't in the theatrical version (such as seeing Roy's thumbs go into Tyrell's eyes and blood shoots outs, and we actually see the nail go THROUGH Roy's hand). Otherwise they're both pretty much identical, narration and all. Those gory clips were added back in for the Final Cut.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
It does. This voice-over was removed in later versions of the movie, which is very unfortunate because I really like it. It reminds me of those old detective movies.
TonyDetelder 2 years ago
Which is your favorite version of the film?
Mine is the final cut, but I have never seen the 1992 so-called directors cut. But I have seen the theatrical cut once on TV. A far inferior version that was. I actually don't own the briefcase edition, just the 2-disc final cut with the dangerous days doc. No plans on getting the briefcase since the 2-disc comes with the best parts of the briefcase edition. I'm also not the biggest Blade Runner fan, I think it's OK, but really odd and depressing.
creatingausernamesux 2 years ago
Yeah, I lean toward the Final Cut as well. I have a soft spot for the International cut simply because it was the first version I ever saw, and it was the ONLY version on video for a very long time. But as far as being the best interpretation of the story, with all of the ambiguity and openness to interpretation intact, it's the Final Cut every time.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I saw this movie for the first time this past weekend....its really good
assassin216 2 years ago
I haven't seen the film yet,?i got the blu ray of it, which version should i watch FIRST?
supercolton 2 years ago
I'd say check out the Final Cut first, since it's Ridley's definitive version. After that, have fun exploring all the rest of 'em! If you want a HUGE contrast between theFinal Cut and the next one you check out, I suggest the International or Theatrical version next - they're the versions with the voiceover narration (and numerous other changes).
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I have to respectfully disagree with you on that. I didn't see Blade Runner until the 'Director's Cut' was the *only* edition available. By the time Dekker was chasing the first replicant, I was lost. I couldn't understand the plot at all and ended up hating the movie. Later, when I saw the theatrical edition with the voice-overs everything finally made sense!
The Final Cut lacks the absolutely vital plot exposition. Watch it after you understand what's going on- it will be *much* better.
jmbpiano 2 years ago
I don't think the exposition provided by the narration is vital at all. If anything, I find it condescending - telling me things that I could figure out for myself through the actions and dialogue of the characters.
The main reason most consider the Final Cut and Director's Cut to be superior is that it DOESN'T explain everything - it leaves many things open to interpretation, which it how it was MEANT to be. Certain things are meant to be ambiguous, fo rthe viewer to interpret his.herself.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
I've got nothing against ambiguity and leaving things for the viewer to interpret. Heck, I love Serial Experiment: Lain.
The problem with the Director's Cut was that it was *so* obtuse that for someone like me, who didn't have *any* familiarity with the story, I couldn't even begin the process of self-interpretation.
jmbpiano 2 years ago
Fair enough, but it's really not a complicated story - Guy hunts down rogue replicants. Some philosophical musings about the nature of life and death. The suggestion through visual clues that the protagonist is himself a replicant.
A large chunk of that is actually LOST with the narrated version, which simply explains things away (and often in ways that go against what the original intent was) and eliminates much of the ambiguity in ways that lessen the overall impact of the film.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
Oh, and LAIN was awesome. I love that one too.
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
For example, without the explanation of the significance of the photos in the narration, there's no reason for the viewer to suspect that the snake girl is a replicant before Dekker shoots her (and nothing until *much* later in the movie to back up his assertion of that fact to the bystanders.) As a BR virgin, I just found the actions and dialogue of the characters utterly incomprehensible- especially the 'tears in the rain' scene.
Maybe FC is better for a newcomer than DC- I'm unable to judge.
jmbpiano 2 years ago
Wow- you're quick. :)
jmbpiano 2 years ago
Well, the identity of all the replicants is shown in the scene where Deckard gets his assignment.
As for the photos, the significance of photos to replicants is illustrated twice - first when Leon goes back to his apartment to get his photos, and again when Deckard is talking to Tyrell about the significance of memories. Photos are also a vital piece of evidence in favor of Deckard being a replicant - his apartment is littered with photos, continuing the theme. (cont'd)
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
All of which is conveyed visually, no need for narration explaining it.
The point is, ALL the clues are there visually, it was never intended to be narrated. The narration was added at the insistence of the studio. It's a film that invites multiple viewings to form your own analysis and spot the clues along the way. But they're definitely all there!
And yes, you just happened to catch me when I'm checking my messages. :)
Zaranyzerak 2 years ago
All right- I concede your point.
