I believe she was a very disturbed little girl. She experience abused and neglict and of course the combination of mental family problems and social outside atmosphere is a lethal combination. To make some disturbed people sadistic to other and enjoys inflicting pain to get attention or control.

I think anyone would be if their mother was psychotic, sexually abusive, had a drunk violent father and grew up in a home where violence was a normal acceptable thing. She was neglected not only physically but emotionally and that does a lot to a child and effect their emotions. I think thats also what caused her to be so sociopathic.

Some are a direct result of how they were raised & what they've experienced and some turn out the way they do because that's who they were meant to be, good or bad. I don't believe that Mary was doomed to be a murderer, as in she was 'born evil'. Her mother shares the blame in incubating a killer with what she subjected her to. Mary still has to take responsibility though.

I work with behavior disorder kids and I can tell you in most cases there is something in who they are who makes them who they are. The reason she was exposed to these things is her mother was also a psychopath. So now you have a combination of genetics and environment. I'm telling you, it is not just environment.
@fifimsp I agree.. many children grow up in dysfunctional sometimes abusive situations but grow up to lead fairly normal lives. Take 4 siblings for example, all growing up in the same home. Will they all be murderers or drug addicts or have character disorders? Some individuals are more resilient than others and have personality traits that allow them to grow up unaffected by their upbringing.
