does anyone has a video or recording of this version of Daniel Variations shown in the documentary? It's much slower and far more beautiful than the CD version being sold =/
Different Trains by Reich is a stunning work + possibly Reich s best piece. plse see our video work + response "PUSH/Pull" to this landmark work at : TheSmack77 x
To all Michael Nyman fans: You MUST watch the video of "Let There Be Light "... it's a song by MICHAEL NYMAN with rock noir band BELLADONNA and it's based on his music from "The Piano". Nyman himself plays piano on it... search for "nyman belladonna" here on youtube and you'll find it!! :-)
listen to what he says at the beginning of the second part of this documentary. that explains quite well why he does'nt feel like a part of the european musical tradition and why is he on his right to feel like that.
it's funny because phasing is something that anyone who has played with delay time on a pedal has had happen to them, but the way reich organized it is freaking amazing.
Check out the book "The Rest is Noise" by Alec Ross. There is a great section on how Reich came to his musical discoveries. Amazing musician and amazing life...
Reich is one of the few composers around these days who is producing wonderful, interesting music. He's developed his style, it's more melodic, harmonic, even slightly jazzy. Different Trains is a masterpiece. I love Desert Music, You Are Variations. Probably my favourite piece of his is Cello Counterpoint...very complex and moving.
His earlier stuff is much more repetitive. I still enjoy it, but it requires more concentration to listen to.
I was totlay suprised after recently hearing about Reich. We were doing the same thing (at different times). A couple years ago, I started doing songs with only a few sounds. I did one track sampling 2 short lines from Harold & Maude and repeated them over and over with very few variations. I did other ones using drums. I'm glad that someone else does it, but I'm upset that I wasn't the first (I thought I was).
I thought id post this due to the lack of decent Reich material about. This is a South Bank Show featuring interviews with the man himself, analysis of his career and performance and rehearsal footage of his major works (Four Organs, Drumming, 18 Musicians et al).
every time i entered a room and hear music i said:
turned it off, turned it off, turned it off, turned it off, turned it off, turned it off, turned it, turned it, turned it, turned it, turned it, turned it, turned, turned, turned, turned, turned, turned, it's gonna, it's gonna, it's gonna, it's gonna, it's gonna, it's gonna be monotonous

I dont like this guy. I'm not a big fan of Brahms, but anyone who disses Mahler or Sibelius like that is just completely ignorant.
