"Dr. Eggman" has always been his name in Japan. In the West they changed his name to "Dr. Robotnik" until Sonic Adventure 1, where they decided to unify the two names.

@Groudon0199 the real name is Ivo Robotnik, but Robotnik is for the Japanese game and anime, Eggman is only for some games and American anime.

I'm aware of his real name. However, he was always referred to in the Japanese games as "Eggman." He was nicknamed "Eggman" by Sonic and the others, which stuck with him. SEGA of America localized his name as "Robotnik" before going with "Eggman" starting with SA1.

@Franchico60 You have it backward. Eggman is the original Japanese name; Robotnik is an American construct. The Japanese adopted the "Robotnik" name for sake of story on Sonic Adventure 2, where likewise the American version started calling him solely "Eggman" game-wise.

In the beginning Dr Ivo Robotnik was the formal name. Eggman became popular later, I don't know why, maybe because of some crappy cartoon series or something. Then it started to stick.

But it's always been Robotnik, he was created after the chaos emeralds exploded in the face of Sonic's good friend Dr Ovi Kintobor. That is the official original story anyway.

Not been a big follower of the later games, maybe things have changed a little now, or alternative time lines and such have come about.
