i cannot believe what i'm reading. what the fuck guys. the guitar is obviously plugged in. there is noooo way a guitar can sound like that without heing plugged into an amp, speaker cab, di box, etc. if it wasn't plugged up, you'd hear the pick striking against the strings much more than you would hear the actual note ringing from the strings. fuck i can't believe i actually have to exlain this. damn i knew most youtube users were dumb, but holy shit.
Before I've bought any electric guitar, the first thing I've done is to play it UNplugged. You can tell a lot about the instrument's basic tone and woods that way. I happen to like the brighter, cleaner tones anyway. If I was into metal or shred, it might not be quite such a valid or relevant test. One of my guitars is a Tanglewood copy of a Strat which has a fabulous ringing tone when played unamplified - this really does translate into a lovely tone when amped up. You upload is a good example.
I don't like this guitar, if you're playing with the neck pick up it suonds like a bridge pick up, if you want to explain the unplugged qualities of a guitar i think the neck pick up is better. I don't know I've got humbuckers but your sound is like a bridge humbucker. maybe with gibson singol coils is different
My guess is that the reason why this guy recorded his guitar unplugged is because he noticed how resonant the guitar sounded right off the rack. The Melody Maker really is a unique guitar... it sounds amazing and the MM pickups sound absolutely amazing for single coils. Gibson marketed an even cheaper line of guitars under the "Kalamazoo" brand in the '60s. Similar setups... one or two single coil MM pickups. Switched between a Fender Mustang type body and then an SG body. MMs are awesome!
Really ?! it's great ! because I haven't the money to buy a les paul junior like billie joe armstrong, also i want to buy this guitar, it's so awesome if she had the same song ! =D
I have three Melody Makers and I alos have a Faded SG. The thin nitro finished Gibsons really resonate. I will play my SG or one of my MM's unpluged for hours when my kids are sleeping becaus ethey sound so very loud and harmonic unplugged. You could easily take a good condenser mic with a good preamp and get a sound this bright and loud from an unplugged MM; especially if it had new strings. Go strum an unplugged Faded SG....you'll be very surprised at the volume.
@youg0tsnip3d No - it's unplugged. I recently tried a Melody Maker and got the same sort of sound - those things really do sing out before you ever plug them in. Once amped, they give a much fuller sound. They may not be expensive, but unless you want a lot of gizmos and more than one pickup, they're well worth checking out.
not only am i serious, i'm completely serious. anyone who can't obviously desipher a plugged in electric guitar to an unplugged electric guitar, needs their freakin ears checked.
i agree w/ the post below. maybe the poster intended to say 'without distortion'. in that case, yes, he's dead on. but this guitar is obviously plugged into some form of amplification. if you can't hear that, you're an idiot.

not trying to get into a youtube battle lol but its actually possible that its not plugged into anything. the way youtube processes their videos, they actually adjust the volume of certain things to either quiet down something that is too loud, or make something louder that is too soft. its possible that either through poor camera quality(as someone already mentioned), or youtubes processing, that the guitar sounds plugged in even if it isnt. or it may just be plugged in lol. rollstarmusic?
it's like when you play an unplugged electric guitar through a telephone... it will sound plugged in, with the distortion of the telephone... same thing with digicams.
this guitar is plugged into some kind of amplification device (be it guitar amp, or internal speaker). no unplugged, electric, guitar sounds like that.
Did you see the other video?? there isn't any wire and its obvious it is unplugged! That's why I think in this video it could be unplugged sound too!!
I am not fighting!!! Just trying to show you that, in case this vid have de sound recorded later plugged, this guitar sounds awsome and very loud unplugged so, there is no reason to think this one is plugged!
are you retarded? do you see it plugged in? the input is right next to the knobs, my friend has an epi lp special and sounds that loud when unplugged... its from the lack of paint and clearcoat... douche
Hey raidereddie , I believe Leslie was playing a Les Paul Jr. at that point in time. I may be wrong, so maybe looking up some old picks would be a good idea for us both....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This guitar is so overpriced it drives me out of my fuckin' skull. I could make this guitar with better materials for half the cost. Gibson just loves to rape people for the name; same with Martin.
Gibson puzzles me. You can spend six grand on a nice US made Les Paul and at the same time you can buy a US Made Melody Maker for $350 BRAND NEW!!
The Melody Maker is a 'student guitar;' no intonation adjustment, one single-coil pickup, super bare bones. They do one thing and they do it GREAT! They are US made, sound great, and play excellently. This guitar is awesome, affordable, well made, and stylin! Play a few and select the best one -- each one sounds and plays a little different.
I have an Epiphone Special II which is basically a 2 Humbucker version of the Junior...which fits in a Les Paul case, and I was wondering if that would fit if I bought one of these.
bring the case to check, but i dont think so. i tried gibson les paul cases (waaaayy to big), epi les paul cases (just plain didnt fit), generic cases, and sg cases, and the epi sg case was close enough for rock n roll. none of the other cases fit. doesnt mean you shouldnt try though!
so much hate.....
