Yeah. i lived there for a number of years leaving in 2004 to go to NZ and now been here for 6 years. Really miss Cairns and the surrounding area, lived in smithfield, Kuranda and the town centre and worked You get to the point where all the instructors toss up who will do the next dive cause theyre sick of it!!
Never had any muggings or hassle when i lived there(about 4-5 years) and loved the laid back lifestyle. Research it yourself...not keen? then dont live there...simple eh!
I didnt mind Cairns but didnt like the locals attitudes simply because I wore no shoes and a singlet which I couldnt understand. Also would be much better without traffic lights and very fast drivers. Loved the Lagoon!!!!
Loved Cairns....lived there for 3 years...now living in Canada....why? Cause Im stupid. I miss cairns. I miss the esplanade, the cane sugar fields, Palm cove, barron gorge, and the chill lifestyle. You guys have it all!
We have travelled the world, I'm an Aussie, my husband is an American who works in Africa an we live here and LOVE it. It's hard to take holidays as we have it all here.
wavo18, I was actually in your home town of Cairns from the 18-25th of June and it is certainly a fantastic place. All the attractions around Cairns were fantastic.
I think you are being such an ignoramous saying that Townsville and Melbourne are both crappy places. I have not been to Townsville so I can't make a judgement on that, but I certainly know that Melbourne is not a crappy place. Have you even been to Melbourne? Saying that the whole of Melbourne is crappy is so generalised.
Hello wavo18, I have just discovered that you are the same person who has been bagging Melbourne and favouring Sydney yet you live in Cairns.......You can't help yourself can you, townsville is your other main target for bagging. unbelievable........
cairns is ok but a warning to all you backpackers you will leave the place hungover, poor, pregnant, sunburnt and very sad to leave the awesome friends you met be wary though some places are a bit dingy and some locals will try to rip you off, trust me i have been living here waaaaaaaaaaay too long
So much natural beauty around CAIRNS (Holloways Beach, lovely!) but I agree, I lived there from '92 to 2006 and it attracts the worst kind of people, greedy landlords, greedy employers (the worst wages in AUSTRALIA, especially in the hospitality industry)and the pubs are dire at best..I lived there waaaaay too long and left 18 months ago and don't miss it one bit!
Is there a rivalry between Cairns and Townsville? Sounds like it to me. This sounds like the main rivalry in North Queensland. I think the main rivalry in Australia is sydney, Melbourne, a battle that sydney will never win because they know that they are second best.
i so agree with you. cairns was a diapointment for me. i went from sydney and came back with empty pocket and alot darker. everything is toooooo wait TOOOOOOOOOOOO(thats bettre) expensive. the beaches were dirty and not a single wave. but nothing can be said about the great barrier. and the rainforrest there. they are simply amazing
the beaches are nice further up the coast but if you are a serious surfer cairns is not the place for you (the reef stops any real waves reaching the shores)
you're gonna love it, dude. i went there two summers ago (it'd be winter there) and i wanted to move there the second day i was there lol. i guarentee you'll never wanna leave after you visit.
I'm sure I will love it because all the photos of the scenery around Cairns look absolutely spectacular. I want to go and see the daintree rainforest and go on the skyrail and many othere things as well. I don't know that I would want to move there I am from Melbourne and I think it may be a bit too hot and humid in Cairns during summer. Hopefully you can come back to cairns one day.
I've been to Townsville - nice place and good people but Cairns is way way way better. I prefer the green of a tropical rainforest over the brown of Mount Isa by the sea, sorry. Also no racism please :)
We are going down in June/July - hopefully staying near Cape Tribulation/Coconut Beach area, thank you for the preview! It will be my first time seeing "blue" water. I'm really looking forward to touring the Daintree and snorkling the GBR.
Im sure u will have a great time, plenty to see and do, many islands to visit and rivers streams waterfalls and plenty of rainforest. Thanks for your comment.
And by the way Jim none of these photos were taken in Cairns...Port, Palm Cove and every other photo does not show Cairns. If you are English it would be like saying Coventry is in London. Cairns is far more beautiful than Port Douglas, regards Steve, Cairns
Point taken Steve, although the majority are on Cape Trib the garden shots are in Cairns (Redlynch)and the exercise was really to show my O/S rellos the general scenery of the area. Thanks for the comment though.
No, it starts off over looking the Daintree river and the first beach is Cow Bay. The quality of the photos was much better when I put it together and it seems to have lost pixels somehow. Thanks very much for your comment :-)
you're lucky. Sat here in the frzen uk.

The town center is usless unless you wanna buy crap sold by a people that are not even aussies let alone Nth Queenslanders.
All the locals moved away years ago and now live up in the tablelands or Cooktown like we did.
The sotherners are moving up here as well and fucking everything they touch just like they did to Cairns

Golden beaches of golden sand, silky sunsets that glow on your hands, as dawn awakens on this marvelous land, lay back and enjoy as mush as you can -
come to Queensland as soon as you can.
