no one, and i mean no one could improvise like garner... he once said "i hear the notes in my head and hope to catch it with my hands".... i think you caught everyone erroll
I like the way he does a "fake stride" in his left hand, acting as his own metronome, if you will, to strike a slow pulse. Amazing. I've never seen that done before.
Otro monstruo del escenario que se lo pasaba pipa tocando...ja,ja,me ha hecho llorar, pero cómo me he reído también con sus bajos obviados... su mente sigue otra línea además de lo que toca...increíble
It aways astonishes me when someone records a thumbs down after listening to this fantastic jazz artist. Oh well, it's like opera purists who detest Maria Callas, I guess. Unique and supremely talented individuals have always had to put up with people who think that they know it all. I say: Here, have a seat at Erroll's piano bench, and try it out for size!!!!
The correct title of this piece is Penthouse Serenade, not She's Funny That Way. All you have to do is sing - "Just picture a Penthouse way up in the sky..."/ The on;y thing similar are the 5 last notes, and that is debatable. Even the bridge with- "We'll take old Manhattan..." is right there plain to see.
dontheshark -- Erroll made the Penthouse Serenade s lasting tribute to his great talent.. I fell in love with his playing when I was 17 (1954) and have tried to emulate his touch, ever since.
@ChonQuahog Thank you! You saved me from many sleepless nights. I was picturing Bobby Hacket playing "She's Funny That Way" but it wasn't processing. Now that you said "Penthouse Serenade", I got it. Would have bugged me a long time before I came up with it!
I've been playing jazz piano and watching jazz piano players for 55 years -- Erroll Garner is my absolute favorite because he had fun while playing and was both an entertainer and a brilliant, original piano player.
cool. I played piano only 10 years, i stopped (i dont know why) but for me there are: Bach, Rachmaninov and Erroll Garner, they bring new ideas, new music, new live. THere many good piano players, but EG is just... extreme. His touch of the piano is way different and the sounds that comes out is so sweet and soft. Everybody can have technique but not many has the imagination to use it. EG is deffinetly one of them !!!!
You can see Garner moves his left hand as though he is playing bass notes but he is not actually striking the keys....it's just his way of keeping the pulse, like reverse stride.
Yeah guys this is Penthouse Serenade. In actual fact I've heard him play so many versions of this, and in my opinion here we have one of the best. Don't know about you, but Erroll's playing has so enriched my life for nearly 40 years since I discovered him.
same to me , i am 25 and i listen his music since i was 23, i dont know.... cannot stop. Everyday . His style is incredible, so addictive, so... brilliant !!!!
yeah al oh u are right but we are missing the POINT this simply is the master class from the man made from ryhmn- beautiful on al levels and expresses the pureness and unkying nature of notes and how they can be tickled together--
what a hoot!
