I used to have a Commodore Vic20 All it's programs and games where on Tape...
you could connect up the 5 1/4 disk drive from my Commodore 128 and it would load games off the disks they where SS SD disks course I always notched them so you had two sides 500KB in total... you could store your entire game Library on one tape I personally liked the cartridge Rom games you could get an EPROM and load a game from a console onto your cartridge
It's actually quite possible to get almost all old computers to communicate with new computers in this manner, it can be done with a handshake method. Just to show my inner geek. All it takes is a bit of code on both ends to get the to understand the data.
If you have a super serial card, you can try the original apple game server. Requires java and a null modem cable. Advantages: Faster, supports a few disk-based games. Disadvantages: Slightly more finicky, but once you get it working you can also use stuff like ADT Pro to transfer disk images. Fun!
I LOVE THOSE OLD COMPUTERS! YOU SO SUCK!!! (not really - I am just envious) WOW THAT'S SO COOL How you have to do the game data to load in. I remember those days. I even had a Timex Sinclair that you loaded games to and from audio cassettes.
Urgo - are you interested in adopting a 50 something year old son? You make a cool dad! But you would probably forbid me to touch that classic computer - so never mind. The adoption is off. :-)
Love old games like Pacman and Ms Pacman! and original Zelda
@ImTheDaveman LOL! I dunno how much they are going for at the moment but you can probably still get an apple iie off ebay for $100 or lessish :) Then just plug your phone in and bam! Games :)
Very cool stuff! I'm reading the Steve Jobs bio right now, so I just read how he and Woz designed that computer! I'm gonna try to find one for myself on ebay!
@132L7 Yeah its really great so far. And if you listen to the audio version of it Wil Wheaton is who is narrating. Even funnier when he's reading star trek references :)
Quite a nostalgia trip. I ran my first Radio Shack Color Computer, and the CoCo II, off of an audio cassette player. I still have the cassettes. With the CoCo III, I upgraded to *dual* half height double sided 360k floppy drives, in a single enclosure like you have those full height units in. I was the shizzle then, boy. OS-9 Level 3 on one drive, and the apps on the other.
Cool to see a website that has these old games in the original cassette encoded format!
@anmoose lol nice :) The computer you see in this video was the first one I ever used.. or well same or simular model, used it in kindergarten.. the first computer I had at home of my own was a 286. By then it had a little more memory but not too much. 6mhz, 512k ram that we upgraded to 640k and like a 10 meg hard drive I think plus lots of 1.2mb floppies.
