No offense taken. You're right, Dean's take on the Martian tripods is kinda ugly but they have a weird, almost cybernetic and organic look to them. But the effect of them being totally alien is perfectly presented, they sure ain't water towers on the march!

I like the look of the tripods from the new Speilberg WotW movie, they did indeed get all the design points perfectly! Best depiction on sceen yet! As for the Martians themselves, they should have been octopods as in the Wells novel.

for your infomation max is used in hundreds of movies, here's a list, also no program is really better than the next, I use lightwave, 3ds max and maya and I believe it's the artist that makes the difference, the truth is I could use blender to make something worthy of film. I just don't like when people say certain programs are better than others. It's the artist that matters, max is used in many films by the way despite thaoti people say....

Hi & thanks :)

The Footage is 3d tracked, so I have put low Poly "stand ins" of the real buildings within my 3d program and applied a "matte/shadow" material in 3ds max onto them (this material blocks everything which is positioned behind them - in this case the Tripod model). Thats the wohle trick. :) The Chimneys were a bit tricky, because they got not this of a perfet rectangular shape (they are a bit irregular shaped) - so a bit of polymodelling was necessary.

That's true - I faked a lot of sloppy mistakes away with blurring, jaggy movement of the camera and a number of other "tricks" to make all those mistakes not this obvious... but nevertheless: I hope you like it anyway :)

I have to agree with you TippmannHawk. Unlike many people who do not like it, I did read the book, and found it to be a great modern verison of it, right down to the hudson fiery scene. There were no interlacings in the first place... I just put those distortions in to make it look more real - together with MoBlur, DOF, faked BrightnessCorrection and desaturating the colors the crude modelling of the tripod were not this obvious (it's a pretty simple model - take a look at my website to learn more about it).

3ds max, combustion, matchmover... those are the programs used. Work time total (including the crude modeling of the tripod): 7 hours (really). That's why this Video is actually a bit poor in quality... 'cause without those distortions you would see it's a fake almost at once. But the distortions added some realism to it, so acutally I am happy with it
