@Wooflays in an interview I read John talked about the lyrics in Sleep Forever in particular as hearkening back to Censored Colors, and if you pay attention you can really hear the borrowed sentiment. As far as the story of their meaning, I'd guess just like any good lyricism, up to the listener to draw their own conclusions, the ones that make you think the most are quite often the best. I really like the point you made about that sort of irony, I hadn't noticed until then but it's really cool

It's amazingly ironic isnt it? theres sections and sections of chanting lyric almost like a church choir in this song and album and gourley seems to just spout existential lyric that is seemingly anti christian. I'd love to know the story behind alot of these lyrics.

It is not the mere act of re-using material from previous albums and works. Portugal has evolved a particular tone, message, and philosophy that has coursed itself through out their discography. There is nothing wrong with creating a unique feel for your music comprised of similar lyrics that ultimately converge together to create an all-encompassing philosophy. Perhaps you should re-listen to their discography and listen for that message.

Breaking an addiction to security, you might say. I would say it's about the end of our lives, and arriving at one's afterlife. The song, I think, has an atheistic message, because they are rejecting the idea of an afterlife. They don't "need him like you do", and they don't "fear him like you do." They just want to sleep forever.

I know, as an atheist, my sense of morality is often overwhelmed and without a sense of "God" to support me, I wish I could just sleep forever.
