  • without exclusive nods to Criterion, here are 5 foreign flicks that should embarass anyone making films in Hollywood circa 2012: The Human Condition, hours long 3 part Criterion epic, Japanese. 1990 Armenian film called The Yearning, watched it from Facets on VHS. Vidas Secas, neorealistic film from early 1960s Brazil. A Mexican film from 1961 called Yanco. French film from 1967 called Blissful Alexander. 1970 Yves Montand film called The Confession. And...Il Grido,Leon Morin,FreezeDieComeToLife

  • Good guy Good guy.

  • nice beard yo!

  • Or the Belgain film: 'Man bites dog'???

  • @georgekaplanful I enjoy that movie.

  • @CameronMcCasland You should watch District B13. It's newer than the the others. Plus it's an action movie. But I love it. It's French and if you watch it please give me feedback.

  • Great picks! I have yet to see Pickpocket but I want to get to it as soon as I can. Bicycle Thieves is one of my favorites and The Spirit of the Beehive is a peculiar case for me. I liked it a lot. I don't know why. I can't even explain the movie but it got to me on a visceral level. Then on the interviews in the special features i learned that not even the actor got the movie when they first read the script! Then I thought I wasn't so lost after all! LOL! I simply love it.

    Thanks for sharing

  • @freshymint1 very good. When you see Pickpocket, let me know what you think.

  • Gilliam I think used Spirit in 2nd from last film, in the use of the railroad

  • @PtAltmVansanTarr i think your right

  • Why Spirit of the Beehive? I can't understand why this film is recommended over others.....

  • @PtAltmVansanTarr I had watched it fairly recently before making this video and it moved me. I like what it has to say about the power of the movies to shape your life. These are not always my favorites, just some that i enjoy.

  • GREAT LIST! You should check out White Wedding from South Africa though. Very good film! Lemme know what you think, there are clips on whiteweddingmovie. com KEEP UP THE GREAT BEARD!

  • @EiCoolguy i'll keep my eyes peeled for it. thanks for watching

  • sick beard! Im gonna have to check out all your recommendations soon bc I really enjoy foreign films! Last year i saw White Wedding which I thought was really funny but extremely powerful. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it in the future!! whiteweddingmovie. com

  • @drbrth thanks for the comments. I've never seen white wedding, Ill look out for it.

  • Great films. I wish I never sold my criterions, but kinda hesitant at buying them again...EXPENSIVE! hahaha. great vid! Subbed!

  • @FormulaDGoSpeedGo yea they mad expensive, but the trick is to see if the dvds are on sale

  • @martinezmarcio1 yeah, best to shop around. Netflix and Hulu also have alot of these.

  • @FormulaDGoSpeedGo heard Hulu Plus was planning on adding the complete criterion collection. Might be a way to rewatch on a budget.

  • hey if you want to see some good movies from the netherlands you should check out the following titles:

    Vet Hard (Fat Hard)

    TBS

    Flodder

    Flodder in America

  • @T0m291189 I'll make note of it

  • young santa claus?

  • @wesbeebub you nailed it. Better watch out...

  • You're wonderful.

  • is this guy muslim ?

  • is seven samuri a good film to get on the criterion collection

  • @rapist41 Seven Samurai is wonderful.

  • @neilpiano I have not. ill have to check it out

  • @DVDCOLLECTORDANIEL Criterion is a dvd distributor, who showcases some of the greatest films in the world. do a search for Criterion collection and watch a few titles. might change your world.

  • I've watched M and Spirit of the beehive. Both were excellent, and yes you really should check out the Spanish film Viridiana, cuz spirit of the beehive an viridiana are the 2 best spanish films. Also , i recommend you watch Stalker and The Cranes are Flying, both russian films.

  • @tool619 great suggestions, ill try and check them out

  • Good call on M. Great film, I always preferred Fritz Lang to Murnau even though the last laugh is one of the best silent films ever made.

  • @bigtoe512 agreed

  • i need to see M. and diary of a country priest was awesome. good review!

  • @buffilms let me know your thoughts after you watch it

  • @CameronMcCasland its free on netflix so i got no excuse to watch it

  • How about the French film "Baxter"?

  • @greyhoundfriend123 been meaning to see that

  • pan's labyrinth and city of god are wonderful films

  • @imablackgirl agreed

  • Nice vid! I'm getting into the Criterion Collection myself. I now have Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and "Throne Of Blood." Awesome packaging. Some of the sets can get pretty expensive though, and recently I got "The 400 Blows" on Essential Art House.

  • @scenester64 yeah, the trick is waiting on sales and keeping your eyes peeled for used stuff. Netflix has a lot of them if you just want to watch and not collect. also most public libraries stock them.

  • Hey dude. Looks like you have cool tastes. Keep up the cool vids. I'mma get a start on watching your list. and I'll tell ya what I think. I am ashamed to say I haven't watched these films. You've probably seen it, but Werner Herzog's Stroszek was a good one for me. As well as Jaque Tati's Playtime. It had a nice 1920's silent screwball comedy feel for me but still pretty pastoral.

It was refreshing to see someone with a foreign film list without Oldboy in it.

  • That beard officially rules!

  • buy Viridiana, The Exterminating Angel & Simon Of The Desert all by Luis Buneul Very Good Films

  • The only Criterion I've seen from your list was Spirit Of The Beehive. You should check out some of these CLASSIC movies on Criterion Collection: 1. Fanny & Alexander by Ingmar Bergman 2. Ran by Akira Kurosawa 3. Tokyo Story by Yasujiro Ozu 4. Band of Outsiders by Jean Luc Godard 5. 8 1/2 by Federico Fellini 6. Viridiana by Luis Bunuel 7. 400 Blows by Francois Truffaut 8. L'eclisse by Michelangelo Antonioni 9. The Human Condition by Masaki Kobayashi 10. Night and Fog by Alain Resnais
  • @fernandoiscrazy i have all of those except Viridiana

  • @CameronMcCasland

Well good for you now you've seen 9 out of 10 classics! One more to go!

  • have you seen pans laberinth?

  • @UnDeadTroll47 :D best movie!!!

  • I have seen The Hidden Fortress on TCM-Turner Classic Movies

  • great selection! Have you seen Cinema Paradiso, Old Boy , or Amelie?

  • @Jamiekimme0643 I've not seen Cinema Paradiso but enjoy the other two thoroughly. I'm familiar with it, just never taken the time to sit and watch it. Thanks for giving this a look.

  • Great list. But even better than Pickpocket is Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar. =)

  • @mariagcavallo Balthazar is great. I watched it last year for the first time, Still prefer pickpocket but great stuff.

  • Dude love the beard, wish I had one like that, stupid hormones. Full respect to your love of films.

  • your a beast bro ...buy more

  • very cool

  • Hey, I see you're a fan of all things cinema. I was just wondering whether you have seen 'London After Midnight'? Starring Lon Chaney Sr as a rather hideous vampire like character. You should check it out :D

  • I'm a fan of Changey. I've seen the recreation done with photos, that was on the Warner Brothers set, but sadly London After Midnight is a lost film. I keep hoping a copy will pop up somewhere and I have hope that it will after discoveries of lost scenes from Metropolis and some Marx Brothers turned up in the last few years. Heres to hoping.

  • @CameronMcCasland Indeed. I am still hoping after a long time that there will be a copy at some point. Also, I have seen certain photographs of Chaney's make up and certain sets etc. But it would be incredible to actually see such a classic film. Ah, we can only hope, for now.

A quick question... Do you know if there are copies of the 1923 German film 'Die Strasse' starring Max Schreck. Im aware that it has been distributed by certain companies, but I am yet to find a copy of it anywhere...

  • to my knowledge they have never released

Die Straße on dvd (at least not stateside) . I have never seen it, but I believe TCM has aired it before. If I were guessing, I'd say shooting an Email over to Kino Is your best bet. If anyone was going to release it, I think it would be them. Silent films are fairly scarce on dvd.

  • you should get long hair to you beard

  • Are you high? (Not related to the recommendations, all these films are brilliant)

  • you have the most ridiculously amazing beard/

  • @AlligatorZebra thanks

  • best beard on youtube - hidden fortress, good pick.

  • Yeah! great films you recommended!

  • Epic beard. I am jealous!

  • @edssdd thanks. you can have one too

  • hey man, just watched Pickpocket, gotta say, thanks for the recommendation, I loved it. Reminded me of Taxi Driver, not sure why but it did. Also I picked up Hidden Fortress from amazon. Keep doing these.peace

  • Bicycle Thieves is GREAT! i watched it when i was young and i loved it and look into vertigo its also a great movie

  • Bicycle Thieves!!!

  • These are excellent picks. Bicycle Thieves is great

  • Fritz Lang kicks ass! And The Testament of Dr.Mabuse is another great Fritz criterion release.

  • very nice but just to let you know my collection is better and i know about more cool stuff than you.

  • Cameron, got to watch the Bicycle thief this week, thanks for the recommendation. Very good, but what a sad ending. If you like this type of film I strongly recommend Malena, Starring Monica Bellucci. Very emotional and sad but bits of great humor. I kept thinking while watching Malena, what a great Wonder Woman she would make.

  • I just stumbled across this video and subscribed. Nice beard btw.

  • @laynix thanks so much

  • chungking express is such a great movie. i still don't totally understand it, but every time i watch it i'm glued to the screen..

i have also seen M .. way ahead of its time.

have you seen any films by shinya tsukamoto? i always recommend bullet ballet, but it's way more tame than his usual fare, ala tetsuo

  • @harvey101107 I haven't but Ill check it out

  • Wow, excellent choices. M is a great one, as is Spirit of the Beehive. I have yet to see Bicycle Thieves, but I've been told numerous times that it's a must.

  • how many dvds do u hav!

  • i honestly have no clue how any movies I own. somewhere around 3000 give or take a few.

  • Thanks for taking the time to put this out Cameron! I'll definitely check out the middle three! I have seen 'M' and 'The Spiit of the Beehive' which I really liked. I do have a recommendation for you if you haven't seen it. It's been a few years since I've seen it and would love to see it again, called 'the Five Obstructions'. As a film makker yourself I think you would get a lot out of this I as did.

  • no problem. I have heard great things about Five Obstructions, but have never taken the time to watch it. I'll seek it out.

  • I love netflix for having movies like these available to see...

Great choices...There are ones I haven't seen like Spirit of the Beehive and Pickpocket...I'm going to put that on my list...Great video....

  • let me know what you think when you watch them

  • I own spirit of the beehive. Fantastic little film. The Frankenstein obsession was great.

  • coolest beard EVER!

  • thanks

  • Wow peter lorre playing the child murderer. What a shock. ahahah. That guy was the coolest villain.

  • agreed

  • Great vids Cameron

  • Why did you take this down and reupload it? and the beard is badass!

  • it didn't transfer correctly the first time.

  • oh ok, i was watching it then poof it was gone on me.

  • I would suggest : La Antena by Esteban Sapir

Here is the trailer and yes it is a pretty weird movie but so enchanting it draws you in completely. Pure cinematic magic.

    /watch?v=nnxCpKQ7DYU

  • Herbstmilch by Joseph Vilsmaier

A movie about germany during world war two but somehow is only a sidenote to 'normal life'. Impressive personal drama that never gets dull but when you think about what the story is about.... life really.

    Trailer at:

    /watch?v=OzPAd8GJSIE

  • I'll check it out

  • The first vid I have seen of you and... a guy that is sugesting M, Bicycle Thieves (would have picked Ran for Kurosawa)

    can't be bad. ;^)

I will check out the other two because of that.

  • it was honestly a toss up between this and Ran. Let me know your thoughts when you watch those movies

  • Badass beard.

    E

  • thanks
