Why? There's not difference in the software of windows running in a vm vs running directly on a machine. It's just a hell of a lot quicker to have two machines in a window on one, than actually set up two different machines as a demonstration.
PFsense doesn't run inside windows! It's its own OS, and it was in its own vm. He just used windows in a second vm to connect to the web interface of pfsense.
Besides, Vms' are totally amazing for just this kind of stuff. It's possible to setup a bunch of vms' and use them for testing stuff like network infrastructures and such, where in the old days, you actually needed like 8 physical machines.
Noob question, can pfsense box take 100 base t tomato firmware dsl and serve our network with gigabit performance or will it be limited to 100 base t ?
Yes, the NIC facing the LAN just need to be gigabit ready, and you need good enough cables for gigabit. OF course the WAN interface will still be limited.
@XmortdreadX just give it a go its not to difficult, just make sure you have 2 ethernet ports, one for lan and one for wan. And that will fly. My P4 bearly gets over 5%cpu usage.
pfsense is AMAZING! This demo barely scratches the surface. One of the best free distros I've ever seen. It deserves to be up there with Ubuntu and Trixbox Asterisk.
This is almost like m0n0wall. What you do is get an old computer like a pentium 3 or newer or athlon 800mhz or faster. 2 network card if using a good switch/hub or 5 network cards like the 3com, SMC or Intel pro based cards. 64mb ram or more. Load the OS image to an old HDD or Compact Flash card with IDE support. Boot the computer then setup like the video here. The $60 routers you buy like the linksys, D-link or even belkin they burn up after a year or so. Where the pc will last.
M0n0wall was easy to get it up and going provided the NIC cards were supported in my opinion. IT worked alot better than the Linksys routers I have used in the past. Due to being the PC is more powerful and has alot more CPU power to handle Torrent, P2P connections without cooking itself to death.
pfSense is amazing. I currently have four sites using it with IPSec vpn's between all of them. Three of them are using regular x86 hardware, desktop/servers. The other is a netgate m1n1wall 2d3 embedded box. It's still in testing but so far it's awesome. I will soon test it out with a microdrive.
Nice video keep up the good work. I'll be looking forward to future ones.
You can install a wireless card in to a Pfsense box as long as the card is supported by FreeBSD or you can us a seperate access point connected threw ethernet, connected to the your switch, or right to the pfsense box. At home I us to apple airport express N for my WIFI
worst demonstration ever for being ran inside a Vm on a Mac . should have been ran on a native XP machine or Windows based machine.

Use Google DNS instead, 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4 is easier than 4.2.2.2
