I had this bootleg LP back in the day. I even bought it at a record store. At a party someone took it off the turntable and melted it on top of my old tube amplifier. Think it was bootlegged during the recording of " Nashville Skyline." Thanks for the memories, GD! .
The magic these two men made together is timeless. Cash and Dylan were friends and sang what they liked. If it sold, great, if not, they still loved singing together. For the many critics that panned Dylan's voice over the years, "Those that can do, those that can't are critics"
I have seen Dylan maybe 10 times since 1965 and cannot wait to see him again.
@moobada "Mountain Dew" is a Grandpa Jones composition which he first recorded in the late 1940's or early 1950's. Grandpa Jones' definitive studio version, with his rollocking vocal, and five string banjo played at a breakneck tempo, is posted on YouTube. It's great fun! For a quieter, country harmony style, go to the Stanley Brothers version also on YouTube. Carter Stanley's lovely lead vocal, and flat picking style, combined with Ralph Stanley's high harmony is great country music.
@moobada Everyone knows Ralph Stanley today from the "O Brother" movie. He's had a great solo career. But country music lost maybe its best brother act when Carter Stanley died at such a young age.....he was 41. Carter Stanley was a great vocalist, guitarist, and composer....and harmony singer with Ralph.
Two real legends and iconoclasts. I'm going to get this cd. Also searching for something like this but w/Dylan and Henrix. For the younguns who don't know ... Jimi Henrix was also a huge Dylan fan.
all of you should know, mountain dew refers to moonshine, the soda was named after that. Why would johnny cash and bob dylan have been singing about a soda?
@gduwen Is this a commercial CD of the tapes they made during the recording sessions for Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" album? They recorded a lot of duets at that time, but only one was finally chosen for the LP. The rumor was that all the unreleased recordings were bootlegged and achieved wide distribution. I know that "Mountain Dew" was one of the unreleased songs in this group.
@Stonegolem42 you are too stoned, dylan straight pemps this song. and the whole dylan/cash voices rock together ...dylans voice is waaaaaay more bluegrass, johnny cash is def more country oriented.
mmm. soda pop rules.

I really like this version of this song but no one ever did it like Grandpa Jones! He put so much into his performance.

Bob Dylan really doesn't have the voice for this song. Johnny Cash rocks it, though, as can be expected. Where'd you find this?
Stonegolem42 3 years ago 9
I found it on Nashville Sessions CD by both of them.
