I think that if you really want to learn what filmaking is and how to write for cinema, you can't go wrong studying the films of Samuel Fuller. Pickup On South Street (1953) is a "little" film about little people, but it has such a texture of reality to it. Slice of life drama, one of the best kind and the sort of movie which is almost never done anymore. Listening to Fuller describe his scenario is a wonderful education.
One of the greats.
