It's obvious that he has a box of cards instead of the deck after pulling the pen (you can see it at 4:35). But how the hell does he make that seven of diamonds show up backwards!?!?
I don't buy any of this Penn & Teller let some pass coz they want them in their Vegas show. If they want them in their show, they would book them anyway. Be nice if that line of reasoning would just stop. It's a tad insulting
4:35 - He takes the seven of diamonds & puts it in a brand new box. Unopened but there still is a decent "magical" hole where the card can be introduced & places perfectly between the 8 & 6 of diamonds.
*Notice the plastic seal is only on top of the box.
It's all about quick hands, psychology & illusion.
@ObviouslyChris ur wrong mate. He puts them back into the same deck of cards that Penn chose from, thats the only way he can mark the position of the card Penn chose. That's also the only way he can remove the duplicate card (i.e. wud have to remove the other 7 of diamonds. Its more complicated that you say. Somehow he gets the original deck of cards into that new box.
This is weird, this show is like spawning a new type of magic. Magic for magicians. You purposely "slip up" in your presentation to misdirect a knowledgeable magician. That deck switch was a little bit too obvious. I'm an amateur magician and I saw that. But, I get the feeling that he wanted that to be obvious to a fellow magician...
I was curious why I always see Penn with a red fingernail, so I looked it up. This was my favorite possible reason:
"When [he] first began performing, his mother told him to get a manicure because people would be looking at his hands. In response to this, he had all of his nails painted red as a joke. The one remaining red fingernail is in honor of his mother."
You can look him up on Wikipedia to see the other possible reasons.
@tomdewilde1 The only explaination for the card going into the right spot in the deck is that hee got the original deck that Penn chose from back into the box andsealed it up somehow. If he put it back into a brand new deck with a trick slit, he would also have to remove the other 7 of diamond.
@bBoyMikE13 Go to Penn Jillette's wikipedia page. There's a section about it. Basically, three proposed reasons:
1. It means he once shot a man for asking personal questions.
2.When Jillette first began performing, his mother told him to get a manicure because people would be looking at his hands. In response to this, he had all of his nails painted red as a joke. The one remaining red fingernail is in honor of his mother.
3. It's just cool and can also sometimes provide excellent misdirection.
This just confirms what I was suspecting. Ben & Teller let some pass who they think have good showmanship and think will entertain their audience. They see what happened, they even say it. Look from 4:26 forward. But they let him pass because they don't know how he got the card but he takes the card and slides it in the deck.
@saykoshey Yeah I can see the deck switch and I can guess when he slided. But how the hell could he put the card exactly between the 6 and the 8 of diamonds (Penn was not forced when he took the card, he took a random card). And when the fuck did he put the deck inside the box and how the hell he wraped it in plastic.
@lautaa33 When he takes out the new deck he does something to the deck. @4:27 you can see him take out the new deck en @4:29 you can see him slide in a card with his index finger. Seeing as it's a trick deck, I'm guessing there's something there which allows him to pit in the card and he takes this mechanism awa when he takes the joker away which is there to make it look like he has a stack while infact he has a box.
@musicinspiresme79 When Penn was a kid his mother was always telling him to keep his hands neat and clean so he paints one nail red as kind of a dedication to his mother. I'm not joking either
Watch really close, When he pulls out the pen he pulls out a new deck with the plastic wrap very carefully opened and there is a slit in the cardboard with two cards sticking so very slightly out (the 2 cards being the 6 and 8 of diamonds) when he takes the card back he slides the card upside down in between the 2 cards then fully pushes them back in. While he is talking he folds the plastic wrap back up and with some residue glue it will stay together so he can show that the plastic is intact
@MinecraftPuzzleMaps There are many ways he could have done it. i would try shaking the pack downwards frying to force a few cards out. i don't know exactly how but some way he did. They are usually really clever to come up with things
@SockSauna You assumption suggests that he would already have to know which card Penn was going to take, otherwise there would of been two 7 of diamonds in the pack.
@soulsanctuarymusic1 I think you're totally right. Penn chose a random card. Shaun had to somehow mark the position that Penn chose from, and then slip the card back into the original deck after it was back in the box. Penn could have chosen any card.
@Piemanthe3rd I agree, this is definitely an excellent example of someone who absolutely loves what they do. It just makes the performance much more fun to see
Assuming it's a forced choice, I can see or infer every other step (you don't need to cut a slit, you just need some clever preparation and a bit of Zig glue), but from the video I cannot be sure whether it is (a force) or not, and I'd be a little surprised if Teller didn't spot that. Then again, maybe he was just puzzled by some other part of the trick, and didn't bother to mention it.
What he says at 6:22 makes no sense, though. It should "mean" that was the deck Teller had shuffled.
Could it be possible that he forced the 7 of diamonds and simply switched Penn's signed card with the one that was already in the deck at 06:46 ? I don't think he does, but it would be a simpler explanation...
This is definitely the most impressive card trick I have ever seen. Most tricks, I can think of at least a few ways that it could have been done. For this... I have no clue.
First of all the seven is forced. the position he is holding his 2 hands before penn gives him the shuffled deck is perfect to palm some cards. He got like 10 sevens that he placed on top or near the top of the deck.
Now look at 4:20 when he pulls out the pen and is switching the shuffled deck to a "sealed" deck + a lose card on top which is the joker at 4:45. Finaly he takes penns card and inserts it to his gimmik box which allows him to slide the card in at exactly the position of the seven.
04:18 - He forces the 7 of diamonds somehow, as it would make the trick easier.
04:26 - There is definitely a deck switch where he replaces it with a sealed deck missing the jokers, premium cards, and the 7 of diamonds. On top of the sealed deck is a face down joker card.
04:36 - He places the signed 7 of diamonds under the sealed deck.
04:39 - When he reaches to take the pen back he appears to reach out with both hands for a split second. I think here he is moving the signed card to the top of the deck.
04:48 – When he removes “one” card he actually removes both the signed card and the joker card but only shows the joker in a rather awkward manner as if he was trying to conceal the signed card.
04:55 – He seems to take an inordinately long time to just put a joker back into his pocket. I assume here he is also placing the signed card up his sleeve.
06:02 – There is a quick snapping noise made when he opens the sealed deck but I don’t think he actually does anything here.
06:06 – When he reaches to take the cards out of the deck he must place the signed card into the deck. I assume that there is some mechanical means to prop open the deck to the correct position so the card can be inserted or dropped in quickly.
@paisiello1 nope, the card is inserted into the new deck at 4:37, he has a slit in the bottom of the pack and 2 cards sticking slightly out (the 6 and the 8) so he can insert the 7 back in it's place that he removed before from the deck.. deck preparation looks like this: open the plastic on the bottom, open the pack from the bottom cut a slit in plastic + box remove 7. glue everything back in place & let 8& 6 stick out of the pack
@1990enter You are probably right that he is inserting it in the deck at this point but you forgot that the jokers and premium cards are also missing from the sealed deck. I assume it is relatively easy to tamper with decks and re-seal them.
@1990enter Doesn't make sense. He shows off the bottom of the deck to Penn, who states that there isn't a cutter's slit. Not to mention, he's done this trick twice before on other TV shows. Maybe, MAYBE you could fool one or two people. But four? And one of them's a trained magician with 30+ years of experience under his belt? Yeah, no.
@1990enter Penn is the one that shows the cards. The magician would not take the risk of putting 10 seven of diamonds at the top and then ask Penn to show the cards. Plus, even with 10 sevens in the deck, the chances of Penn getting one of the sevens is only 20%. Those are too much risks. He must have forced the seven of diamonds by other method.
@dmarkwith: At 4:51 he puts the Joker in his pocket, I don't see any visual evidence that it's Penn's card. (Although it might have been doubled.) Nor would that explain how he got the card into the box.
@keiko52 Still the signature remains. This is kind of magic I like, you can clearly figure switched decks;everyone can;you can also come with a THEORY of forced card,a lot of ppl can,but theres a thing NO ONE can figure or even come with a theory.
wow... just wow... the trick seems pretty straight forward.. but the secret to getting that card in the right spot of the deck.. is just beyond what I coukld ever imagine. this guy's clever. the selection dosn't seem forced.. makeing the trick even harder... just wow... and funny
At 4:51 you can see him slide the card into his pocket. And, as Penn pointed out later, you can totally see when he swaps the deck at 4:27. Cool trick, but watch the video a few times and you can see exactly how it's done.
A great effect by an extremely accomplished and talented performer. You should really see his "Shape of my Heart'. It is so totally well secripted, with nuance, drama, pathos, and comedy...the culmination of which is pure magic...awesome.
@Thesis010 That's really is a great trick to do and the easy part is to figure he swaps the cards the most amazing thing (and the part I would like to figure out) is how fast and exactly when he does it, =D
@SomethingRules It's a gag that derives from something his mother said, I believe. When he got on television, she told him to make sure his hands are always neat and clean for the cameras, so he purposefully painted his nail as a message to her. That's what I remember from way back, I could be wrong. But he has that throughout Bullshit!, and now here too, so I'm guessing it's become a trademark.
Maybe he had 52 different resealed decks sewn throughout the inside of his clothes so that whichever card they'd pick he'd present the deck with the flipped card...ok, I've got no friggin' idea!
The moment I knew Shawn was going to this Show, I knew he would do this trick, Thumbs up if you were in Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp last year, and you saw it!!
@4:28 closing the upper lid of the "new" deck cover, he replaced it when he was getting the pen "secret slit in his jacket" by using his 2 hands (which has the plastic seal "glued to it" so the top and bottom, sides are ok BUT not the corners!!)..... :)
It's obvious that he has a box of cards instead of the deck after pulling the pen (you can see it at 4:35). But how the hell does he make that seven of diamonds show up backwards!?!?

Solution:
4:23 - Magician puts deck into pocket.
Pulls out new box.

@Thesis010 That's really is a great trick to do and the easy part is to figure he swaps the cards the most amazing thing (and the part I would like to figure out) is how fast and exactly when he does it, =D

@SomethingRules watch the film
ff7walkthru 6 months ago
@SomethingRules It's a gag that derives from something his mother said, I believe. When he got on television, she told him to make sure his hands are always neat and clean for the cameras, so he purposefully painted his nail as a message to her. That's what I remember from way back, I could be wrong. But he has that throughout Bullshit!, and now here too, so I'm guessing it's become a trademark.

@vladtastic His fingernail is painted that way because it helps with misdirection. you look at the finger instead of what you should be seeing
AmericanPunx 5 months ago 2
@AmericanPunx also notice the fingernail is painted on his non dominate hand. You should watch his other hand when he is doing misdirection
AmericanPunx 5 months ago
@AmericanPunx He does it for his deceased mother. watch?v=Gxq9ORifmOs

@vladtastic, I believe he does it to honor his now-passed mother.

Maybe he had 52 different resealed decks sewn throughout the inside of his clothes so that whichever card they'd pick he'd present the deck with the flipped card...ok, I've got no friggin' idea!

Glad Shawn fooled Penn & Teller, if anyone could it would be him. He was actually born not far from where I live in Manitoba.

@4:28 closing the upper lid of the "new" deck cover, he replaced it when he was getting the pen "secret slit in his jacket" by using his 2 hands (which has the plastic seal "glued to it" so the top and bottom, sides are ok BUT not the corners!!)..... :)
