The new Conan the Barbarian movie is way faster than the old one for example, not just movements but the over all editing have seen an increase in cuts over last couple of decades.
Did they use live action models and then animate/draw each cel to match the movements? The movements, slower than actual, are realistic and obviously "animated". There were a ton of artists who worked on this.
@maryted According to Wiki rotoscoping was indeed used for the Heavy Metal movie. For some other prominent uses of rotoscoping see Lord of the Rings (1978) and A Scanner Darkly (2006). Don Bluth also used the technique for his arcade games Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.
