  • Well done BBC!

  • if you havent seen the streets of asia, you havent seen the world.

  • THUMBS UP IF YOU'RE WATCHING THIS IN 2012! :)

  • Believe me, the real challenge is in Jakarta. You just haven't seen it. The best drivers on the world, all gathered there.

  • i used to walk theses streets everyday, these areas are not the poorest in Manila. believe me.

  • 8:55, there's a dog on the car roof! XD

  • It's a heartbreaking documentary. Thank you.

  • The video shows a lot about the way of life of most Filipinos who live in the city. It's an eye opener to the harsh life and how resilient Filipinos face them. That's why it's not a problem for any Filipino to live and adjust well to living conditions in some parts of the world.

But the docu also shows the need for government to act on measures that would reduce if not eliminate the causes of poverty in the country.

  • Matuto naman tayo magalit. Di puwede ganito. :((((

  • I'm a Filipino. We may live in a worse condition compared to other countries but we can still do something about it. For the Filipinos who have watched/will watch/are watching this video, let's not bash our own country. Instead, let's do something to make a significant change.

  • 24:10 Boobs!!!! :D

  • This was hard for me to watch -facepalm- xD

  • 08:50 and there's a dog in the roof :D

  • What does the oligarchy have to do with "regard for any rules"? I've lived in the Philippines for 10 years, and think I have a pretty good grip on the country. But I just can't bridge the gap on your comment.

  • Man this is a great doc! I felt the triumph with Josh when he got to the end of the route!

Ppl living in rich countries, thank G-d for what U have, for real!

  • Haha. The pirates of the carribean theme song killed me!

    I will report you anyway...

  • @crazykailash lol you you have a clean beautiful soul. :)

  • funny how I'm learning so much in my own country from a documentary made from another. i would never want to experience this in my lifetime. i was really touched by this.

  • The dog on the roof of a car is like the movie Salt. Haha!

  • i actually cried along with josh while he's showing empathy to rogelio and the woman who cooks scavenges. i don't think he completely understands what they're sharing but he feels the story and cried as well. such a big heart.

  • @joyscenes FAKE AND GAY

  • It's the first time I'm seeing a jeepney that's using turn signals!

  • i bet he cannot last for about a year driving in Manila.

  • very real! he must try driving a deadly bus.. the safeway bus company!lol..its like a bullet train running within 100kph-150kph.

  • Like a Bus

  • It's easy to predict whether a car or any other four wheeled vehicle is about to cut you...motorcycles, on the other hand, are a nightmare. They cut so suddenly and so quick without fear as if they feel like they cannot be killed.

  • it amazes me how famous imelda marcos is. majority of the foreigners i've spoken to know about her. and here she is even known as a former president! astounding.

  • Comment removed

  • Josh- you have a good heart. You are the best! God bless you and your family.

  • It is such a shame that Josh knew the Philippines because of Imelda Marcos and her 200 pairs of shoes.

  • I'm a south korean.

s-korea used to be way poorer than philipine.

s-korean used to say "It would be good if my country is like philipine"

I think national charater of philipino is major proplem.

they don't have any eagerness to succeed.

many of them idle their life away.

and the reason they have too many children is not becuase of the Catholic but they are too lazy or foolish to contracept. if the Catholic is the reason , how are many prostitutes and adulteries in Philipine explained?

  • @jazzyman1 With all due respect, you seem to be over- simplifying the problems of my country. The problems that the Filipino people face are as numerous as they are complex. In the same way that it took a confluence of many factors to make South Korea what it is today.

I'm sure that you must not have meant to insult us with your comment as you sit on your high horse. Still, I urge you not to be so quick to judge our character, when you know so little about the humble Filipino.

  • @jazzyman1 I agree. The problem is the national character of most Filipinos. Quite a number of Filipinos think that Philippines has lost all hope possible, thinking lowly of the country. Instead of actually doing something to solve the problem, most just carry on with their lives with only themselves in their mind.

But I disagree that we, Filipinos, aren't eager succeed. Just look at those Filipino workers who'd rather work overseas to earn money. But then, this example shows my 1st point above.

  • @jazzyman1 You are right bro, if you are looking at the frame of the picture. Try to look at the whole portrait, you will surely have second thoughts. It is safer to personalize in your position, but you are way off brother if you generalize. I work in one of your Hyundai shipyards before, supervise korean workers do easy jobs that some have a hard time doing it right. So I use the word "he" or "she" to describe the person's character but not the word "THEY."

  • 13:03-13:13 Ice Cream Music xD

  • Welcome to one of the most deadliest roads in the Philippines, Commonwealth Avenue. 32:39

  • wtf 8:54 dog on roof of car lol

  • Salute to Josh and Mang Rogelio! But I definitly Hate Bus driver, Jeep Driver, Taxi Driver and Tricycle driver who has no regards with traffic rules. and what is worse is that motorcycle drivers are growing in numbers everyday, they too are hardcore on the road. which leads to more accidents. These drivers do not have real license which is why they disregard traffic rules and they buy/get fake ones. Being a passenger you struggle for your life, Being another motorist you also struggle everyday.

  • Reality bites!

  • Good vid

  • thumbs up for Mr.josh and mang rogelio....

  • My mother was born in the Philippines, luckily she lived in a more wealthy family since the gap between between wealthy and poor is so HUGE. It seems like there's just no middle ground. She was the youngest out of 12 children. She told me it's like a competition. The church doesn't allow condoms, and religion is such a huge influence over there. The population is just going to keep growing, & there's just no space. Whenever we visit, groups of homeless children would beg to us for food..

  • im an american pinoy but ive never adapted with the heat in the philippines. but it was a good time there. jollybee, chowking, adobo, all those food, and sm mall, oh was such a good time.

  • man, black people are bitchy, @ 43min 04sec

  • Manila has plenty of buses, as in real buses. He could have driven those; not jeepneys.

  • @davidgkessel I think the producers picked a jeepney driver because jeepneys are more commonly used for transportation instead of buses

  • Living is easy. Surviving is hard.

  • @razorramon191 Ninja Dog.

  • CJ! You returned to San Andreas from Liberty City?!

  • At 5:20, the narrator says, Filipinos have no "regard for any rules." THAT PRETTY MUCH SUMS UP THE PHILIPPINES AND THAT'S THE REASON Y THE COUNTRY IS POOR AND CONTINUE TO SLIP DOWN THE ASIAN ECONOMIC LADDER. It has no discipline, the political and legal system are corrupt. And the Filipinos refuse to change it. Heck, the country is still relying on World War 2 jeepneys that look like trash cans with engines.

Until the people revolt against the oligarchy, nothing will change.

  • @1818JoseRizal1898

    filipinos are brainwashed

  • @chickenmanokout I am a filipino, and i agree.

  • @chickenmanokout I agree. That's the perfect explanation as to why the Philippines is poor. It's already 2012. While the other Asian countries like Vietnam and Cambodia are rising up the economic ladder in Asia, the Philippines with its supposed ingenuity, skills, talent, Christian faith and English speaking ability, the Philippines is nothing but a hopeless septic tank overflowing with backward mentality and corrupt bullshits.

They keep saying HAPPY NEW YEAR, but nothing is changing.

  • @1818JoseRizal1898 don't generalize

  • @paopao242 its ok to generalize, particularly when you make an accurate generalization.

  • @razorramon191

hhaahahahah xD lol, looks so funny

  • Tears is the voice of Heart.

  • Bitch please... Go to Makati, Ortigas, Alabang, Eastwood City, Global City... We have Glorietta, The Podium, Shangrilla, Mall of Asia, ETC... ETC... ETC...

    Now that's poverty.

  • Great Job....Josh is now a Filipino :)

  • My gf lives very close to that A1 driving school, just tatlo kalsada away :)

  • Mr/Ms Politician, contractor, public servant, private stakeholder, Juan: Every single Peso you unjustly take more than what is due your service contributes to adding another shanty on the banks of Pasig river or somewhere else where people are not supposed to live in. It is awful to watch this reality and only a stone wouldn't be moved by it.. Now to all those I've mentioned above, I dare you to watch this video with your children and answer honestly when they ask you why there is such poverty.

  • I am a Filipino and I am so proud of you Mang Rogelio, I am proud of all the jeepney drivers and of all those parents who are responsible enough to work hard for their living. May God Bless all of you. I hope that the government may find some time to pay attention to this poverty.

And most of all I am so proud of you Mr. Josh.. a big man with a big heart..

  • 14:57 - conversation got boring

  • @tvt96 AY GIRL! XD

  • this is something we are not proud of as Filipinos... but then, surviving through this kind of situation in our country hardens us, thus making us tougher, despite the calluses and emotional challenges we face everyday... that makes us who we are... that makes us proud in every way...

  • @rexyflexx tama ka dyan pre. We lived in San Andres Bukid (represent!) We still have a house there. Mas matatag talaga ang pinoy kahit saan lugar, kakayanin. Here Aussies take everything for granted, they whinge that their job 'sucks', 'too hard', pays 'too little', they hate the people around them for the littlest things eg being stuck in crowded trains. I challenge such people to go to Ermita or Tondo live for a year catch the LRTs earn very little and eat next to nothing.

  • Just watched on australian SBS TV... What a great Doco story..... I was in manila twice this year...yes that is how these poor people live .,, thanks BBC from an australian

  • what a heartwarming story... brought tears to my eyes. Mang Rogello is right all Filipino's share the same idealism that if they work hard they get rewarded but sadly its not, but still we work hard still hoping... J. West is awesome. kudos to BBC for airing stories like this.

  • Take that, you corrupt officials and lousy politicians! You and your ghost-employee sons and daughters are the ones who should eat pagpag.

  • Great docu, BBC. Endearing and an eye-opener at the same time. Josh, you're one of the many wonderful Brits I know. Bless you.

  • @askherbs Josh needs no blessings. Those poor people in Philippines need it.

  • thanks mum and dad for immigrating to Oz........I have to go back now and give away money instead of shopping for shit I don't need.

  • TOUGHEST PLACE TO BE A BUS DRIVER..... Group. On Facebook Come join and see lots more

  • What an excellent documentary about the Philippines. i just happen to browse onto this and I'm glad I did. As an American who's spent a few months in PI I have grown very attached to the culture and people. Josh had an awesome experience and it's heart warming to see his compassion. The driving he did was insane! The epic music was perfect lol. I hope to help people in PI whenever I can, and make tons of pinoy friends. Good stuff.

  • an eye opener to say the lest!!!!

  • I'm from manila and my reaction is :(

  • what a very nice documentary, I can't help but smile at the end of the video..

I'm a Catholic but after watching this, I must say that Catholicism must be stopped here in the Philippines and RH Bill must be passed.

  • this is the TRUTH about Philippines and everyone should know about it.

  • As they say, if you can drive in The Philippines, you can drive anywhere.

  • @swaggaking35 Why? At 3kmph, it's easy....

  • If you're still there, God... Please. Please. Please help eradicate poverty in the Philippines. We don't have to be a rich country. I don't mind settling not having all the luxuries, just give everyone a respectable means of living. Please be there. Please .Please.

  • @miiica Stop doing nothing and do something.

  • Oh gosh, I go there every year since I'm half Filipino. Being a passenger is very stressful..

  • I'm not saying we're poor, But we are living a high quality of life. But Yes, when going to school, I always commute using the Jeepney or Bus. Even the rich adapted the system of transportation here in the Philippines. In the eyes of many countries, It's a catastrophe living with this kind of system. I hope the Philippine government will watch this video and fix the problem, also, stop commiting GRAFT!

  • fuk sake this is so heartbreaking, yet we get people whinging about all kinds of crap..fuk the people who whinge about stupid things..think selves lucky you got roof over your head and clean water..josh went on a journey that he didnt expect when he went to the Phillipines..then to make matters worse the nonce paedophiles go over there and abuse their kids....dont anyone tell me that there is a god.

  • Did anyone notice the dog surfing on top of the truck's cab at 8:53? Anybody? ANYBODY?

  • @zerggon yes....

  • Not all Filipinos eat "pagpag". I didn't even know what it is. But after watching this documentary, I was speechless! I am a Filipino Nurses working here in the UK who sometimes moan from time to time. Now, i won't! Life in the city (Manila) can be really tough.

Unfortunately, most of the people from the province prefer to live and work in the city and live in slums. And this is what I don't understand.

  • Starting at 35:00, Rogelio started talking about sending his son to a good school and no matter how much he tries, he can't get himself out of poverty.

He doesn't realize he's living a better life than the rest of his fellow Jeepney drivers. He owns his own Jeepney, his house is made of stone, and he said that he used to live in a real squatter's place before and managed to get out.

Mr. Rogelio, your hard work is paying off. You've been a good host for Josh. You will succeed.

  • @triadwarfare "You will succeed."

He will not succeed. How will he succeed in a closed and corrupt society like the Philippines. That's like building a house made out of ice in hell. In a country of 90,000,000 million Filipinos, only 185,000 have decent jobs and homes. The rest live in poverty like Rogelio.

The only way for Filipinos to succeed is to annihilate the oligarchy's corrupt monopolistic business practice and the unjust legal system that they control.

    Philippines=Hopeless

  • @1818JoseRizal1898 It's impossible to eliminate corruption as there will always be people trying to take advantage the system even in 1st world countries.

I agree that he has a dead end job and I won't expect if he'll be able to buy a house in a subdivision, make a savings account, or send his kids to universities but what I see is that he has pulled himself up where he owns his own jeepney, constructed his own house, and he doesn't have to eat pagpag like the ones in Tondo.

  • @triadwarfare he sealed his life when he had 8 kids... what an idiot.

  • @thanksforyouruploads He only had 3 children. His children are already old and have their own family but they're all just living in the same house so that's why they have 8 people, not 8 children of his own. That includes his wife, his immediate children and the children of his children. They can't just move out because they don't have a stable income. Were you listening properly? Don't insult someone's intelligence if you can't get your facts straight.

  • @triadwarfare my bad.

then his kids are failures!!! when have kids when they can't get a job?

looks like they need to cane the grandkids so that they don't fcuk up in life.

  • @thanksforyouruploads Manila isn't a place for them. Mang Rogelio says he wants to stay in his hometown but he can't because he says there's no income there. The only solution now is for the Philippine government to expand their metropolitan areas outside of Manila. The Philippines has so much potential but it is so underdeveloped and everyone is just cramming up Manila because of the negative perception of the provinces. I hope this will change soon.

  • @triadwarfare err... u still have hope for their incompetent government?

    for real ?

the best thing he can do is to ensure his grandkids don't fcuk up like his kids.

don't marry early, don't have kids till u can get out of the poverty line.

  • @thanksforyouruploads If people are as gullible as believing the contraception being a sin... that's the problem.

  • @triadwarfare Overall, he's probably much more happy than the average spoiled North American. He's a great guy.

  • You are definitely right..! I do agree with your very humane opinion Indigilmer...

  • this is why my father and mother worked hard to get into Canada because of the life style in the Philippines ..

  • 29.14 looooool

  • Josh, you're the man! thanks bro for sharing your precious time in the philippines....long live bro!

  • 22:54 naka sala! haha.

  • i love this documentary...

  • I feel so sorry for these people who work all the hours god sends for basically peanuts, if i won the lotto, I wouldn't give to charity so the greedy fat cats could steal the money..i would go straight into the heart of it and get my hands dirty in countries like this, so as i know exactly where the money would be going. I bet these countries dont even have the luxury of lotto like we westerners do! these people deserve a chance!

  • @tauro2 actually, it maybe ironic but there are hundreds of lotto ticketing outlets in the Philippines. A lot of varied people line up for a chance to win and live a better life. Its actually sad that even a family who lives with almost less than 4 dollars a day would still spend for lotto tickets. It has greatly become a source of false hope in the country.

almost every barangay in the country has a lotto station, and a barangay has a very small population, like 6,000 to 30,000 or so.

  • @sulayanan ..i didnt know that, but i guess its much harder for the guy in the vid to just go out and purchase one like us and still have lots of cash left over, if he buys one or two tickets, to him thats probably like a days wage and someone in his predicament just cannot afford to throw money away like that, knowing they have a family to feed and there is a very slim chance of winning, its much easier for us in that respect..

  • This video demonstrates again that people are people, doesn't matter what nationality they are. It all depends on what opportunities does your society offer to you.

  • check out the dog on 8.52-8.55

  • presidente panoorin nyo to baka ma mulat ang mga bulag na mata nyo. gastusin nyo sa tama ang buwis na binabayad nmin.

  • Pasakop na tayo sa America, China, Hapon at mga taga Inglatera.

  • I <3 THE PHILIPPINES!

    I <3 FILIPINOS!

    I <3 MY COUNTRY!

    Mabuhay, Pilipinas!!

  • @8:53

Amazing DOG, only in the Philippines

  • Mr. Josh West, I am Cebuana and had British bus driver partner who complains a lot, and I did share this to him and hopefully, he will find life easier than he thought. I'm proud of your character and being humble. You are such kind-hearted person. God bless you always

  • recooked amp,,,!

  • @08:52 That DOG is epic! thumbs up if u see it!

  • @08:52 That DOG is epic! thumbs up if u see it!

  • Some of this episode is absolutely heartbreaking, i though i had problems in my life .... i really don't

  • I really like this documentary.. very nice Mr. Josh

  • Love the Pirates of the Carribean background music at 53:40 ! :)
