This boss battle was not how it happened in Sonic CD. In the original game, sonic had to race metal sonic in order to save the kidnapped amy while robotnic fired a giant instant-death lazer behind the both of you. At the end you win the race and the gate shuts, trapping metal as he is vaporized by the lazer.

In case anyone didn't know, there are seven chaos emeralds, and when you have all seven, you can become super sonic, who has a glowing aura around him. You can also have hyper tails and hyper knuckles, super silver and super shadow.
