I wouldn't want to see the english version. The French Revolution needs to be viewed in FRENCH, although my French is not 100%. I would appreciate subtitles, though.
Yes, well, for those of us who don't speak a word of, the English language version holds slightly more resonance as we can actually understand what they're saying.
Yes, I see your point, but it does sound more authentic if they speak French, doesn't it? Certainly if they have would "dub" the French actors in english, it would be awful, because the movement of the lips doesn't match the speaking...
I don't know. There are scenes that are in the English version that aren't in the French version: it's a lot longer! And I heard somewhere that they had the actors dub themselves, which gets amusing as it becomes extremely obvious which country they're from in a few cases, as the actors sometimes have strong accents. The movie was made by a lot of different countries. But there are a lot more cute scenes: Robespierre and Camille imitating Sieyes' pamphlet has to be seen to be believed!
Yes, I think you're right about the actors. Klaus-Maria Brandauer, he plays Danton, is an austrian actor. He speaks english quite well I believe, but not french, this is not his voice.
True that, but as there's no subbed version, if one doesn't understand French, one must watch the English version (which has this amusing moment where the actor playing Saint-Just falls into this strong accent that's just make one wince) to be able to understand it. (I needed to show it to someone who knew absolutely nothing of French Revolutionary history - as in the comment "I thought Marie Antoinette got away" was uttered at one point - and found the English version to show her).
I wish there were english subtitles, but at least I know a little french, and also, I've studied Marie Antoinette/Revolution era, that i have an idea what's going on.
@PlainYork I keep looking for it all the time, but nothing ever turns up. I guess it's up to the film makers or distributors. Perhaps they believe there's no market for english subtitles. In which case, they would need convincing.

To answer to all questions about the langages, this movie was shot once in English, and once in French.

Did Jane Seymour, Sam Neil and Peter Ustinov speak in French during this movie or was this movie originally in English and then dubbed in French ?

I watched the first segment of this and it looks very interesting. The costumes are gorgeous! Too bad there are no subtitles after this. :-(
