  • wow. MattScottUK is a complete asshole. nice playing by the way

  • its nice! missing jazz there just take it slow ^^

  • Nope! This isn't playing the blues - this is what a drone sounds like! Take some lessons and learn the basics - the left-hand should compliment with blues chords. This is terrible!

  • Thanks. This video was uploaded in 2007, please check out my more recent stuff. Plus this was on a Clavinova, the left pedal sustained the left octave While I played the bass and solo licks.

  • @Tony07UK I'd like to add to this and say that the Blues are from the heart - the very essence of the music. There is no "way to play the blues". It is what it is. I rather enjoyed it.

  • @AngryGoats If you go to any music shop you will find books on Rock music, Jazz & Blues .. precisely because each style has a different history, rhythm, scales ~ jazz is jazz, blues are blues .. they are different, hence, there IS a way to play a particular style. All music styles have 'rules' - even though music is born from creativity it is creativity based on principles and rules ~ improvisation isn't random. Hence, there IS a way to play blues; there IS a way to play jazz and rock.

  • @MattScottUK That's true - and that's how you find the cookie cutter variety of musician. Those who learned it out of a book and follow the rules. Blues was born from breaking the rules. There are styles and that's what makes the Blues the Blues - but who is this douche to say that you have to play with your left or right hand or what to do when you're playing?

  • @AngryGoats You've missed the point! According to your theory a monkey could sit at a keyboard, "break the rules" and you would think it's good blues. 'Breaking the rules' doesn't necessarily make for good music. There are specific patterns & rhythm in blues .. it isn't random .. not just 'anything' can be defined as blues. Tuition books are meant for guidance - also, the blues era has passed; it was born out of the 1920s - 1960s.

  • @AngryGoats Pro blues players to listen to are B.B. King, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix .. Elvis and The Beatles also did blues compositions.

  • I think you're missing the point. B.B. King, while he may be great, he is a very 'standardized' musician, as in he has been playing the same stuff for decades. He is more built towards people who call a song for him to play because he's played it a million times. The reason why I used this style is because, at this time I was not that good at comping, and this way sustained chords while I can play bass at the same time and a solo. This IS BLUES, its a 12 bar style w/basic blues chord changes.

  • @JetForceF22 You've missed the point - you're crap! You can't compare yourself with B.B. King or anyone else .. because you can't play! You think prodding around on a keyboard and calling it blues makes it 12 bar style ?!! Your left-hand is just a dead weight .. no rhythm there whatsoever. Your right-hand plonking around randomly .. also doesn't make it blues. Don't think you'd sell many CDs unless people needed a coaster for their mugs!

  • And just because I am making a legitimate argument with you don't turn to bashing me just because my argument is legit. The problem with typical youtube viewers is that when they start loosing an argument they immediately start bashing and name calling the person who is making a valid point. Personal attacks like what you have made I do not accept, constructive criticize I can accept, but remember how old this video is before you start trying to feed me a can of bullshit, asshole.

  • While I will admit at this time my overall technique was not this good, Blues shouldn't be relegated to what the book tells you. Just because the 2nd measure chord doesn't go to 4, stays at one, or does something random like a descending major third, or augmented 5ths with a major triad built off of it, then the next chord is a decending 2-5 progression until it reaches the 5th measure then resolving to a 4 major instead of a dominate chord, does that not make it blues?

  • @JetForceF22 Don't flatter yourself ~ you have NO technique! Nothing to do with books - you simply can't play.

  • Just because I have 'no technique' here in this video doesn't mean jack shit anyways. This video as I said I made at least 4 YEARS AGO, and now it is designed to gauge my progress as a musician and a pianist. If you want to be an asshole feel free to do it somewhere else, I don't accept douche bags bashing me because they don't like my old ass video from when I was in high school. Please be considerate next time of other human beings, I'm not a fucking brick and have no emotions you know.

  • If the song doesn't follow a 12 bar progression is it not blues? If the changes are not typical blues changes is it not blues? My answer is No, there can be different variations and takes on even the most traditional styles of music, and Blues should not be relegated to this kind of standardizing. I have heard blues played a million different ways, and some so obscure that it takes a chorus or so to even recognize it. But because its not the norm you cant say that a different style is not blues.

  • @JetForceF22 You've missed the point again ~ you have no blues style. 12 bar blues is a million miles away from your 'Hammer horror' background droning.

  • Well you may not enjoy this but it seems other people do. If you're going to blatantly be an ass then I will gladly block you, I don't need a troll telling me how to play music, when I specifically said 'I admit My technique here was not that great' because I made this video at least 4 YEARS AGO. So you can take your genuine asshole trolling to another video, if you want to make some constructive criticism next time then please do instead of calling me crap and saying I simply cant play

  • I have a song uploaded titled, "No Better Time." At 52 seconds in the song, I use the Gb, Ab, B, Eb, then the F, Ab B Eb, and play a little lead with my right hand. I just happened to run across them one day and I think there are some good possibilities there. By the way, your licks, riffs, (whatever you call them LOL) sound good. I am not that good with licks.

  • Haha well thank you, if I were you I would start learning to play leads and licks/riffs in the key of C on the 12 bar blues scale, then after you get that down you practice moving them to other keys, I learned in the keys of C and G because there the easiest pretty much, then down to F, and Bb and so on. This piece is actually transposed to Ab from G because I wanted it to be in Ab because it sounds good but its hard to sound good I haven't really practiced in Ab too much lol

  • Minors with 7th's do sound good. I noticed you are playing in Ab. Try these chords if you get a chance and tell me what you think. I cannot remember what chord this is but the notes are, Gb,Ab, B, Eb, (play Abm chord with other hand.) After you play that slip the Gb down to F (keep hitting the) Ab, B and Eb keys and play the Db7 chord with the 2nd set of notes. I think it sounds really good.

  • Hi Jet, Enjoyed your blues. I am a beginner myself but have you tried using 7th chords in place of minor, or is that the way you want it to sound. You are hitting some nice lead notes, sounds good. I played a Yamaha Clavinova the other day in the VA Hospital chapel. It had a good sound and showed what chords you are playing. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting.

  • Thank you for you comment! I've got 7th chords down, and I was messing with this one day and found some of the minor 7th progressions (and major seventh passing tones) work really well towards the end of the blues form. I'm working on different voicings on chords by starting them in different locations (off the thirds mainly which also creates substitution's)

  • I'm trying to figure out how to add more to my style instead of straight blues. I want to be able to play like say Jimmy Smith/McGriff and do the Count Basie voicings one day and thats what I'm working to I got a lot of theory to learn and I can see what I can do now and how to get different sounds. Thanks again for you comment and good luck with you musical studies!
