Alternatively, pull the hood cable tight with some pliers, while someone else presses down on the hood, slides a hand underneath and squeezes the lever. Then it opens.

@eponymous Right, that will only work if the cable or sheath hasn't broken on either side of the two pins, the lever is only for the secondary hood release after the hood cable is released.
