Met Gales at BB Kings in Memphis...he was a real prick and burnt. Sad to have that much talent and wasting the vessel it came in. Gales is playing Eric's licks on his ride..that is so LAME...play something of your own! Oh wait...he doesn't have any...
@cookingnotes Eric is great, but if it weren't for Jimi, I don't think we'd know who Eric Gales even is. Nothing against Eric, but he hasn't written any songs that even come close to what Hendrix produced in the short musical life span that he shared with us. To compare the two is not really doing either of them justice.
Gales is such a awesome guitar players.......watch him play..National Anthem at Gibson Lounge..the whole cub stopped!!! Everyone just stood,,there with their mouth open....No Kidding,.,.,.
@rockinrandy327 what you said here led me searching for that version but still cant find it here. this is what i found; the BB King's Memphis' version and the North Lawrence Ohio version (after Voodoo Chile)
Oh man. Hit the wrong key on my iPhone there! Didnt mean that question mark. Anyways, a song should be allowed to evolve and be experimented with. Sometimes it will be better, sometimes not.
Because they can! How boring it would be if they played it just like Hendrix. Why be a carbon copy if you can personalize it? When I hear a cover I hope it's not identical to the original?
jimi's guitar playing on the original version is eloquent, lyrical and beautiful. why add a bunch of nervous noodling triplet arpeggios and scales? these guys are talented but jimi was and remains, the voodoo child.. ☮
right, I've heard covers of Hendrix's original work, and it's always derivative and inferior (no I heard one I loved) - but nothing can touch Are You Experienced as a seminal work, a touchstone of Western cultural shift - Jimi turned us all on - on the other hand, the two Erics are nice to hear jamming, too
Who else when they first saw this thought "Well this can't be the same "Waterfall" that I'm thinking of..." and then when you heard it thought "Oh wow that is so cool they would do that..."
I beg to differ. I think this is absolutely gorgeous. If you meant quality, well yeah it could be better. But it doesn't deface the performance one bit.

I don't mind a cover. What I DO mind is when musicians can't even play within the spirit of the song. Neither Johnson nor Gales could practice a little self control and play a song that was ambient before ambient was even a word. Hey fellas, you'll get plenty of chances to play a million-notes-per-minute, howsabout playing only a few that work.
i like EJ's playing, but it sounds like he rolls the tone knob all the way back, and i hate that tone. Gales kills it though. i wish he had done all the singing also. Johnson has such a weak little voice.
It's great to have this artist back at his craft and the freedom to give. Hope Eric contiues with this amazing, spiritual provoking aproach to music. Sly said, " take it higher". I say continue to touch those that feel and welcomes your art. The world is in your hands. Peace and love be with you and I'm looking foward to your next creation.
I like EJ a lot, and all interpretations are welcome when it comes to Jimi,,,BUT the thing with covers are that the groundfeeling should be maintained. And in this particular number the FEELING is much much more important than any overkill by skilled guitarists. To capture the mood of jimi´s composition takes alot more than just being a wizard ( technically) on an instrument. It takes INSIGHT. !!!!
the guitar is a st. blues made in memphis tn.,,,im a long time friend,,,theat goes all the way back to high school when we both played drumsin band and church,,,lol its funny that we laugh at that when we talk about it
i'm so feeling this ....you have to hear past the distortion and bad sound quality and feel the tune for what it is.... I wish I was there for that.......
@thecarlfia56 I was about to talk hella shit but then I saw your channel and subscribed. I'm sure that Jimi would have liked this too but everyone is entitled to a little trolling... : )
I know what you mean triggerhappy6... I saw this tour Oct. 2008 and it had the same effect on me as well... What a great show... So many talented musicians under one roof at one time!! I was in music heaven that night!!!
both performances on this song from eric gales/eric johnson playing together have left me nothing short of feeling goosebumps and in complete awe, just complete awe.
what a nice comment. sorry dude, that i sound cheesy but i mean it. nowadays everyone either brags or insults-it was a delight to see that there are people out there that actually have a brain, and use it...

2 of the most incredible guitarists of all time together!
Johnson's glassy smooth tone and lighting fast fretwork is perfectly complemented by Gales' gnarly riffs and screaming notes.

A shame the person filming wasn't more center, as E. Gales was much louder than E. Johnson, but it's not a complaint in the end.
I think playing with others brings out the best in Mr. Johnson.
