  • Mike gets an idea for a song: brings it to Brian who proceeds to find the music. He's at the piano, chords and notes are flying all over his brain, his fingers can't keep up with the notes in his head, all Mike can do is just sit and sing his part over and over again. While coming up with the chord changes, Brian is SIMULTANEOUSLY also coming up with background vocals, and when he finally asks Mike what he thinks Mike couldn't care less: "Yeah, sure!" Yeah, thanks Mike.

  • pmoyer50 he wrote the words for good vibrations . that by itself is great .

  • mike love is not a very good guy in some ways but he was crucial to their sound and one of the best lyricists in pop .

  • @biblerockets I don't think so.

  • @biblerockets : Sure, if it's about hot dogs, cotton candy and caramel corn he's a great lyricist.

  • Gosh, after amazing songs like Cabin Essence and Surf's Up, 13 years later MIke get's all excited about recording 'Going to the Beach'.

  • If you take Dennis out of the picture ( and I do appriciate his stuff like Baby Blue and Love surrounds me ) the Beach Boys were always really Brian ,Carl and Al .Mike Love has a voice for sure which contributed in a big way but he's was always more of a side man with an ok voice , who knew that the money and royaltys were in the song writing ...which was never his forte .

  • "we have a catalogue of many songs" understatement of the century... haha ;)

  • I've seen lots of BB pictures, but honestly I've never really seen any of Mike without a hat on. He had a real combover going in this vid. I wonder if he's totally bald now.

  • @peterp21 : If you got their early All Summer Long album his receding hairline was obvious even back then. He's a man of many hats - not talents.

  • @pmoyer50 Yep, ML unfortunately got the bald gene early in life. That sucks, but I can't insult him over it like a lot of ML haters love to do. Guy had no control over it, and worked in an industry where his appearance took on a lot more importance.Hell, might as well insult BW for being a fat smelly pig in the 70s if we go that route. Sure ML was not *the* talent in the band, but that's OK. Not all 5 guys have to have the same talents. It's about chemistry. ML was integral to the BBs

  • @peterp21 : Okay, you've made your point about the hairline thing. But Mikey wasn't integral to the completion of Smile - if anything, he's probably most responsible for it not being released in 1967. Brian Wilson was the Beach Boys when it came to great music coming out. If it wasn't for him, they never would have amounted to anything.

  • Mike is bald

  • GOD had an idea: I need to create a musical group that is based on 'family.' It will need a creative genious--the 'soul' of the group, so I will name him Brian. It needs a 'spirit' and I will name him Dennis. It needs compassion and the voice of an angel..he will be Brian's messenger and his name will be Carl. The group will need a cheerleader and he shall be Mike. And, finally, the group will need a loyal friend. and he shall be Alan. The BB's are the sum of it's parts.

  • I do think Mike made at least some degree of positive contribution, but whatever this amounts to, I can't think it being worth the trouble he has caused...stifling Brian's creativity...and eventually relegating the Beach Boys name to the status of an oldies band instead of the pioneering artistic force which more accurately depicts the band's legacy.

  • @kalibria I'm not into the "conventional wisdom" aof ML being this supervillian. Look, ML had differing views of what the music should be and he had his issues with PS and Smile. But hey, he had a right to his views as a part of the band. And to be honest, the man did sing everything BW asked him to on PS and Smile. But ML gets blamed for stopping SMile. He didn't. Brian's drug issues and generally psyching himself out because of Smile killed it. If BW wanted it out, it was coming out.

  • @peterp21 also the dramatic withdrawal of Van Dyke Parks from the studio after an argument over lyrics; doubtful he intended it to be permanent, since he expressed surprise that SMiLE was shelved. Again, no blame. Drugs? Pshaw: Brian said of LSD that it simply showed you the entirety of what you were capable of. Hardly the words of an acid casualty. Brian endured such physical abuse growing up it's no wonder his nerves were frayed. All 3 brother's credit their Dad's key initial role. No blame..

  • @atrios28 Responding to an old point here, clearly drugs had a negative effect on both Smile and of course Brian's existence thereafter. At some point the Smile sessions and Brian's behavior got more erratic and I believe it coincided with his getting more and more into the drug scene. And if you think BW's early use of LSD did nothing but make him see things more creatively, you're wrong. BW himself said he started hearing the voices 2 weeks after his initial acid trips. Not good.

  • @peterp21 The word "drugs" is used for everything from aspirin to heroin. It's conventional ignorance reinforcing. Re drug scene: on New Years Eve that means the heavy alcohol use & abuse which is easily one of the hardest of hard drugs when road fatalities, homicides, rapes, molestation, spousal & child abuse are added to the 200,000 yearly alcoholism deaths. Where's Brian's LSD quote? He said speed & booze debilitated him (+ anti-psychotic caused-facial tics -- tardive dyskinesia).

  • @peterp21 I'm so glad somebody has pointed out the tragic folly of B.W. fans deluded into the notion that the best way to honor him is with Mike Love-hating. As Brian said: "You can't make everybody happy, but you can make some people happy...I'm not happy--I don't feel as happy as I should. Once in a great while I think that life has been a rip off for me...But then I think: look at those Beach Boys, how great they are...Look at Mike Love and what a great singer he is."

  • Dennis Wilson RULES !!!!

  • 2:10 reminds me of something that would be on South Park for some reason lol. That comical way Mike tries to "rehearse his voice" then someone just comes over the intercom "Mike...Mike" I picture a south park drawn Mike Love....hilarious lol

  • hahah i like how mike has a picture of the maharishi beside him when he sings @ 0:30

  • @2:40 It's amazing what Brian can do to a song thought up by a idiot. Brian is a legend

  • @1:41 yeah great one Mike! Maybe he got inspired from taking a shit! taking a shit! Boy.....what a dick

  • Mike's eyes look all squinty and scary

  • lol Mike Love looks like SHIT and can't sing!

  • Mike Love really looks like crap

And then when he's with brian on the piano, brian is like "come on idiot u can do this, thank me your rich just cause of me"

  • mike doesnt deserve the right to be there

    HE DIDNT LIKE PET SOUNDS

HE SHOULD HAVE BE FUCKIN DEAD BY THEN

  • @jammmon

    HE LOOKS VERY STONED HEEHHEHEHEHE

  • What song are they singing in the beginning?

  • @Queenfan778

Goin' on from the Album Keepin the summer alive

  • Mike Love is a tool

  • thanks!! very very interesting!... specially the wilsons, obviously...

  • Must have been winter cause they all have beards.

  • This has got to be the most fascinating footage I have ever seen on You-Tube. I have been a fan forever - even met and recorded with Dennis and Brian - and this is truly a treasure. Why none of this was ever included in all the documentaries is beyond me.

  • Mike Love is a dick too.

  • see Brians looking at his mouth he's deaf in one ear! such a shame

  • Mike looks better without a hat. Less fruity..and this song goin to the beach isn't half bad...But Mr. Love is talking about it like it's some new masterpiece lol...gotta love it

  • Yeah. I love how Mike is so happy that he has something to offer. Then Brian just came and arranged the song in two seconds.

  • Hahaha, the face Carl makes when hearing "Going to the Beach" is fucking classic.

  • @runnersdialzero33 Your comment re: Carl's expression really made me laugh. It was so true!

  • Mike without a hat! I love Mike!

  • Carl knew it best! "Goin To The Beach" sucked balls!

  • Whoa amazing to see Brian & Carl put th melodies, brian is a genius... Wasn't in the Big Sur Studio owned by Al?

  • what the hell is wrong with mike's eyes?

  • @crinkleman123 there is a devil behind them.

  • @SnuffyWuffles Thought so

  • Say something useful or shut up! If you don't know anything to say, don't say it. Just calling Mike names tells us nothing.

Profanity is the inevitable linguistic crutch of the inarticulate motherfucker.

    — Bruce Sherrod

  • goin to the beach my girl

  • i just pointed out the obvious, BW now out sells the beach boys, how sad, since no brian, everything mike love touches falls apart thats why he hangs on to the band name, he has no solo work/sucess under his name. he sung hard bass lines????!! he may as well talk then! he has 7 wives and sued every beach boy in the band any reason why he is hated so much? it appears im not the only one then .. weird isnt that people dont hate dennis or al that way.. look at reality and understand it

  • O God, calm the hell down. Every member contributed to the overall blend. Creatively speaking, Brian and Mike were incredible because they bounced ideas off one another. They worked well together. No one was a musically talented as Brian, I think. However, Mike was definately the word man. He may be an ass, but give credit where credit's due.

  • how do you know when mike love is at your front door? ?? you dont ...he cannot find the key and does not know when to come in....

  • if mike is that talented which song did he write alone first of all that was a hit, NONE! what song did he ever write alone!? none what instrument did he play none? (yes right he played the sax in kokomo!!) how can you even write melody or a song climing that if you cant play an instrument or read music? i can write lyrics does that make me a musician? useless piece of shite mike love

  • . He sings thru his nose, sure; but he is not piece of shit. In reference to your other question, what BB aside from BW wrote a "hit "for the BBs ??? Johnston's Barry Manilow's durge doesn't count. Mike did not play sax on kokomo. He used it as a prop in the shows. So llighten up. The GROUP together is where the magic used to lie. ML sang some very hard bass vocal lines, and he does read music, as BW used to WRITE OUT the harmonies for them all to read.

  • mike has as much takent as me which is zip, he is also almost as bad as landy

  • youhave no idea what you're talking about.

  • The Mike bashing has been tired for a long time. Mike does have talent and contributed his part. The history books have been written and Brian got all the glory, as he should. Just chill and enjoy their incredibly vast catalogue of great tunes.

  • That's right

    JHP

  • Love them. Every second, every fricking track of their entire career. When you know them and their voices, and how their voices and their blend changed over the years, like so many of us do, it's a joy to hear them sing anything.

  • Totally agree. I feel very lucky to have witnessed the evolution of these great talents.

  • "I was just walking back from the beach one day, and I thought 'Goin' to the beach! Goin' to the beach!' "

You're a genius, Mike. By the way, Brian wrote Pet Sounds. Just reminding you.

  • @BotswanaBabyBullet Best comment ever

  • Carl knew it sucked.

  • cowboy hat al?! ahah:)

  • Comment removed

  • the complete trust, deference, and love in carl's eyes as he watches brian helps helps me remember the kind potential of humanity :(

  • @harirex What a lovely comment you made about Carl. He did indeed love and respect Brian, Carl's admiration for Brian was evident in many of the excellent videos shown on YouTube. He was a beautiful person, and the world is a sadder place without him.

  • Mike does have talent,but...... not like brian, and correct me if im wrong but wasnt mike love envited to be in the band?Without brian wilson and carl and dennis ther would be no beach boys. Its not all about mike love.

  • ugh. everything mike says seems to drip with ego and condescension.

  • Still AMAZING to see Brian and Mike working on a song, much as they had on so many classics. Like Mike or not, he and Brian had songwriting partnership for the ages.

  • Great video, great to see Mike and Brian working together very well!

  • Mike Love is a brainless retard. A poster child for the simple-minded.

  • That's the funniest comment (and truest) I have read in a while...

  • Gittah, agreed. I do resent Mike for making Brian feel like he had to abandon 'Smile', but without his voice it wouldn't have been the same.

  • everyone gets on mikes case, sometimes rigtfully so,but without that nasally eddie haskell vibe it wouldnt be the beach boys.

  • Eddie Haskell... lol! That's the perfect comparison to Mike Love.

  • it didnt make the record cause you wrote it you fucking douche. you shouldve been gettin brian a cold drink & let him write. This vid proves what an ego this cat has.

  • around 2:30, i think Mike seems quite impaitent with Brian

  • Mike Love was never needed in The Beach Boys. He wiggled his way in the the writing only so he could collect profits later on. Brian Wilson was and always will be the man behind the Beach Boys. Beach Boys concerts are a joke nowadays compared to Brian Wison in concert. Mike love couldn't sing or play an instrument and was a poser that never even surfed.

  • @soulsurfer56 although you have to admit.... none of them really surfed except for Dennis, the only real surfer of the band!

  • @soulsurfer56 Only denny surferd, and not much really. Actually, played an important part in their early career, and I attended a Mike and Bruce concert in Hawaii a couple of months ago, and they were GREAT !! were they The Beach Boys ? No. but the put on a great show, much to my amazement

  • @soulsurfer56

He was, after all, the man who bragged that he wrote "Kokomo" without Brian, to which we all responded "Yeah, we can tell!"

  • @soulsurfer56 Obviously The Beach Boys could have existed without Love but never without Wilson. However, while I'm as down on Love's "Don't-fuck-with-the-formula" stories as any BBoys fan, your total dismissal of him is too strong. He was a brilliant pop lyricist - side 2 of "Today"/ "Good Vibrations" etc etc. Also that unique vocal 'blend' depended on all 5 'boys'.

  • @soulsurfer56 Such a comment is really sad... Mike Love has probably had good reasons to get profits from the past. He's got a very good voice and is a member of the band. Shame on your comment and all those ones who agree with you. You are the same kind of people who blame Yoko Ono for the Beatles split up instead of thinking that's just life leading to a development in the relationships, like it happened in the one between Lennon and Ono in defiance of the Beatles.

  • @soulsurfer56

Agreed. Just watch any of their live performances. Unless he sings lead, he just dances like an idiot and sings "Doo Wa Doo" in the background. Al Jardine's voice was similar enough to Love's that they could have booted Mike from the band and had Al take his place.

  • @soulsurfer56 While I agree with most of your post concerning the Mike Love irritation factor (I saw them in the early 90s and had to suffer a 50 year old Love wiggling in front of cheerleaders singing "Be True to Your School" - Carl, to his credit looked severely depressed) I do have to disagree about him being "never needed". Despite himself, he was a brilliant pop lyricist. Side 2 of "Today"? The '66 single (and vastly superior to the B. Wilson "Smile" remake) version of "Good Vibrations"?

  • @soulsurfer56 Big thumbs down to your comment on Mike. I'm no Mike cultist (plenty of blind BW cultists though), but give the man his due. He was part of a legendary group and played a key role on vocals, as a frontman, and as a lyricist. OK, so he wasn't as talented as Brian. Well, BW was brilliant musically. And that's OK. Not everyone has to be equally awesome. But by that logic, you might as well fire 1/2 of every legendary band. You don't have to hate Mike to love BW or the BB.

  • @peterp21 If Mike wasn't such an asshole I could.

  • This is freakin awesome. Nothing better than behind the scenes - in the studio -takes. Unrelated, John & Yoko's Double Fantasy- there should be a film documntry on that.

  • Oh Goddness The Brothers Wilson : what a magical moment, Brian is a real genius, and Carl is the angel!!! What a amazing video! Thanks

  • That jamming in front of the piano is one of the most awesome minutes of video and audio I have ever experienced. And when Carl pulls up a chair and joins in ad-lib....

  • For sure! Unguarded and real. Brian Wilson respected Mike's talent for writing accessible, commercial lyrics and front a band on stage, and always held out hope that the band could make hits again, as they had in their early years. And Brian? Brian Wilson knows more about music than just about anyone on the planet...

  • brian shares that 'burden' with paul mccartney.

  • FUCK Mike Love HEs a faggot

    Brians the man

  • I'm confused. Everything you read says Brian was a zombie by this time but the guy injects the magic before my very eyes!!

  • I could watch footage like this of the Beach Boys for hours and hours and hours. They are the most fascinating guys in rock history.

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels like that. I can't get enough. and youtube is my beach boys pusher

  • Thanks - Listening to tapes from studio sessions is fun but video is a blast.
