I couldn’t help but notice opening animation has towns CLAYton & CARRboro, then Miriam Thomas’ image. It's unrelated to watch?v=GYQtgKyWirQ; watch?v=YsJyfJ0b-WA or Thomas speaking to a specific 1985 high school graduating class. Unrelated to discussions of single puppy litters with two dog daddies: porn connoisseurs know CARRboro as home to “Adam & Eve”. A later annual shows “CHECKerboard attire” & hathCOCK working with MIRIAM hyMAN on an ABC puzzle, reflecting WTVD 1985-present ABC affiliation
Funny how seeing these snippets bring back memories as fresh as if they were yesterday. The switch from CBS to ABC came 13 days b4 gsnman's 4th birthday. But I vividly remember the period because it was the summer before I began high school. I recall the PSAs the stations ran explaining the affiliation switch--standard whenever there's upheaval in local markets. The announcements were just like the super saturation we're seeing this year explaining the switch from analog to digital
Of course, weeks after the switch, a big story with stations in the Triangle market & across North Carolina was the approach of menacing Hurricane Gloria, which forecasters at the National Hurricane Center predicted would make landfall at Morehead City in Carteret County. Actually, the eye of the storm missed NC altogether with the Outer Banks receiving some wind effects. But WTVD's main weather anchor was Andy Park then & he frequently called Larry Stogner "Suggs"--whatever that nickname means
Watching a WITN (NBC 7 Washington, NC) newscast the night before Gloria was scheduled to arrive is the first time I can recall seeing a forecaster predict a 100% chance of rain. 'If you're in our viewing area, you're going to get wet' & sure enough, there was a ton of rain. One side effect: no school the morning after--no electricity either, but no school. It could be the first time you saw the trace of a pubic triangle since your uncle showed you & your mother where a tick had crawled
Miriam Thomas references the ROYAL OAK postal shooting in OAKland County, MI that left five dead, including the shooter. Disgruntled postal worker Thomas P. McIlvane (374-66-9141) carried out the NOV. 14, 1991 rampage against his former co-workers on the 23rd birthday of CNN contributor and “Washington Watch” host ROLAND Sebastian Martin. Elsewhere in early 1990s North Carolina TV news, Rex ROLAND can be seen in a “First In News” promo for Greenville’s WNCT-TV (CBS ch. 9): watch?v=4uqGWTZn6p0
Miriam Thomas references the ROYAL OAK, MI postal shooting that took place on the 23rd birthday of TV journalist ROALND Sebastian Martin: NOV. 14, 1991. Early 1990s North Carolina TV news included Rex ROLAND at WNCT (watch?v=4uqGWTZn6p0)—a station that also had stalking victim HARRIS FAULKner just before she jetted off to do TV in Kansas City. Unrelated to mom doppelGäNGers: Eastern NC stations provided WTVD with notable talents: KIM Deaner & Keith WHITNEY (WNCT); diabetic George MALLet (WITN)
Unrelated to frequent I-40 LANE changes; touching home base; or UNC Tar Heels basketball player Ulrich “Rick” Fox, this Nov. 20, 1991 broadcast came 17 days before WTVD opened its early evening Dec. 7th newscast reporting the crash of the station’s Chopper 11 in rural Wake County, NC. The crash killed three station employees including MICHIGAN pilot Jim LANE (371-42-3527) and engineer RICK SHErrILL. Sports reporter Tony deBO, then 32, was the crash’s lone survivor (walked .5 mi on broken ankle)
Dear Attmay... This is an example of a newscast that left the MCTYW theme for the revered CHL theme. I wish Buffalo's WKBW had followed suit like Raleigh and Houston, but they stood dumbly by that, à la WPVI in Philly.
If there's a way here on YouTube to use the WKBW news intro video, and dub the classic CHL in place of the MCTYW theme, I'm all eyes and ears for it. Thanks greatly.
Thanks Attmay for these vintage clips of Triangle TV news and other idents! I love hearing Charlie van Dyke doing the voice-over on this WTVD clip! Wish he were still announcing for them.
Ditto here; my sentiments exactly, minus the growing up on WTVD part(I was weaned on WABC).
Another thought... using the WEWS Eyewitness News theme(1986-90[?]) from Cleveland and putting that over the WPVI Action News video intros. How that can be done, I await such wizardry.
KVII-TV borrowed the graphics from 1988-1993

Mike Caplan Isn't he on WLS-TV , Wasn't KGO-TV's Dan Ashley on WTVD around this time? And The text here looks like the 1989 KGO text.

@Dook6 Didn't Caplan leave WTVD for a job in Chicago? I remember seeing him on a station there in the 90s.

do you have any vids of WTVD and WRAL before the network switch? If not, do you know of anyone who does? thank you for your time!

Unfortunately, the answer is no to both questions. But I have friends of my family who have off-air recordings from the era.

Again the chrome ABC O&O/network affil look...incorporating KABC, KTRK and KGO.

All those ABC O&O graphics were done by the lovely KABC graphics dept in Hollywood.

Too bad the Eyewitness Theme doesn't sound like that now.

Thanks for this post. If you have anymore WTVD openings with Larry Stogner and Miriam Thomas please post it.
