As lead researcher for DBT in Northeast, I assure you fly maggot depredation is one of the most insideous dangers to recovery of this threatened species. I have tons of documentation, observational, photographic and video, of these maggots consuming live hatchlings while they are still alive. Spreading old wives tales to the contrary may forestall aggressive action to save these animals from extinction.

Maggots dont eat living tissue, most of them dont, the eggs were probably rotten and the smell attracted the flies, the maggots wont harm the living turtle, only the dead ones or the ones inside the rotten egg (also dead).

A lot of factors can contribute to dead turtle eggs:

1. Bad weather, too cold or too hot.

2. Scavenger dug up the eggs, ate some of them and broke some of them.

3. Bad eggs batch.

I work part time at a marine conservation center. I see this all the time.

Oh yes they do... They enter through the umbilical scar on the plastron and eat them from the inside out. There are two main groups of flies, the Sarcophagidae and the Phoridae...some just scavenge, some prey upon, some both. Some fly species don't even wait until pipping, they bore directly into developing eggs.
