I've myself been talking to many academics and no one have ever said that acting as if it's real is bad, only that it can be ridiculous at some points. Actually why should we marginalize the huge technological gains the last years in more effective engines and energy consumptions.

So, you say reaction latency decreased from 3.3 to 2.9 seconds, but you don't state margin of error or standard deviation for the two results. If you go to the trouble of trying to dot every 'i' and cross every 't', you can't miss that.
