They say that if you listen to classical music, you'll get even smarter.Classical music inspired today's music;since I listened to lots of this,I should appreciate all kinds of music.
@migsrebsaber Yes, it inspired them. But the noise they write nowadays is nothing like classical music; therefore, you do not necessarily enjoy the noise they write today.
I always thought of this work as haunting and this solo is an example of it...wish it were taken a little more slowly.
I have heard it done with boy sopranos as well and it is even more haunting because their voices ring like a bell especially in the high register and vibrate very little.
Nor do I assume there are "accolades"in any other world... I love Bach but I don't put him above a drain digger. I have done plenty of such manual work in my life. And it is good such work. Seriously - we all are "great" in our own ways.
Unlike Handel - who was very successful publically - Bach , like Shakespear wasn't appreciated in his own life, as (much as) he is now - at least he was not widely known. His fame came after his death. Rather paradoxical if not tragic. Also in his day he was considered to be 'behind the times' in his music. "Music's greatest nonconformer" as Glenn Gould called him once.
I certainly wouldn't consider it tragic nor paradoxical; most great men--prophetic, artistic, engineers, mathematicians and scientistst--will never receive their true acclaim in their lifetime.
They don't seek the praise nor the accolades that man offers in this world--they seek to develop their craft and bring joy, wisdom and comfort for all to receive, but it's near impossible for a world of myopic individuals caught in the demands or emptiness of everyday living to recognize true greatness
What do you mean by "the emptiness of everyday living"? I don't think people are myopic - they are busy and have other things to do...which is natural and good. I don't think it really matters. We all die and disappear so it makes no difference. it is not tragic of course..I probably used that little ironically. The main thing is to be happy in life whatever you are doing. But you are right that they (mostly) "don't seek the praise nor the accolades that man offers in this world" ...
@acc96build i called it choral music not opera. although i do find most opera too highbrow. i still say it's hard to beat bach regardless of what he put his hand to
@themusicdr No, I don't like opera much either. Did you know Bach never wrote an opera? I think Bach is the best in every sort of music he wrote :D ... yay Bach!
@themusicdr samething with me, being that I quite dislike Operas and all the singing, but surpricingly I like all of Bachs music regard less. He carries the vioces so well is hard to dislike
You can find the entire text of the passion and an English translation at the site of Minnesota Public Radio. Just do a Google search by typing "Blute nur" Text. It should come up on the first line. Can't put link in here. Sorry.
will you all quit talking about authenticity? Bach himself said in his letters about the leipzig singers that 20 were good, 20 were useable and 20 were useless. Put that ratio in a choir today and sing the cantatas like this for "authenticity".
Too beautiful. Beyond comprehension! I do prefer Gardeners Interpretatino though? I would also advise you to listen to Jan Pieter Leusink's interpretation. He uses Boy sopranos instead of female ones and I have to say that it does add some authenticity to the whole thing :)
Ich bins, ich sollte büßen,
An Händen und an Füßen
Gebunden in der Höll.
Die Geißeln und die Banden
Und was du ausgestanden,
Das hat verdienet meine Seel.

Ach! Ein Kind, das du erzogen,
Das an deiner Brust gesogen,
Droht den Pfleger zu ermorder,
Denn es ist zur Schlange worden.

I like how the lute behind such an orchestra, soloist and choir, can still cut through perfectly without being obnoxious.

Bwilliant conducting, or, on the other hand, good interpretation and leading by 'El Conductor'.

Very somber...and flows quite well, that's what I like about Baroque music.

@quagapp : Hey. I dug graves and can play Bach in the most Schweitzeran manner from time to time. Here, I believe that I can detect the clavichord.

I cant play any music really (except the piano at one stage), and I'm more or less tone deaf - but I love the sound of Bach - so good on you.

@themusicdr This is different from Opera -- It's a "Passion", which is a Christian Oratorio.

interesting.....good is a comparative word, and useable and useless can be quite objective.....who knows what was Bach's standard of good
au2gyg 4 years ago
well from what we know of bach's personality good probably means amazing, useable means good, and useless means good.

There is a boys' choir in the loft, but he doesn't use them much. They were used in Kommt ihr Tochter, and not since.

I also sing in a boys' choir, and we also only sing the start and the end of the first part.
