It depends, if you know ANYTHING about basics of skimming, a fiberglass would be okay, but if you have absolutely NO experiance, then buy wood.

@southphilie it matters on your height... like im 5 foot 2 and i use a medium sized... like around that height use a medium below 5 feet use a small and like 5 foot 5 use like a large...

@southphilie It does not depend on height, only weight. If you go to skimboarding websites like Zap, Victoria or Exile they have size charts... so if you wanted to by a Victoria foamie and you were between 140 - 190 lbs you would buy a large. These size charts are mainly if you are going into the waves or deeper water since you want to float, if your just going on flat water it does not matter as much.

@KILLSWITCH58884 Not true at all. It only depends on weight because the floatation of the board needs to counteract the sinking from the weight, because a 5'2" fat kid would definately sink on a medium board.

When i run onto the board i do my front foot first and then my back. For me it helps alot with getting the board into your imediate control

@momolip67 yes it is, my brother is regular skimming, but goofy snowboarding and skatebaarding. Also alot of how you skim has to do with the way the wind was blowing the day you first picked it up. If the wind was blowing to the right your most likely going to hop on regular. So your just adapted.
