I used to go back to my mums house on a saturday and catch her watching Moto gp in the days when it was on Saturday in the 70s.she was a big fan of Sheene. not bad for a 60 year old woman..
I was a doorman for thirteen years worked everywhere the highlight of all my years is when i was working at a sports bar in chelsea with my freind and barry sheene came to rhe door and we were all over him like a rash . What a lovely guy he stood and chatted to us for about 20 mins one of my heroes from a kid what a treat it was great respect for the man rip barry one of lifes true gentlemen.
so scary..looks like something on the bike broke. 170 in a corner = not fun.these guys crashed faster than i've ever ridden in a straight line! imho barry sheene, one of the fastest ever, a world class racer. thanks for the vid. RIP.
@chrisnapierutube read the title of the clip, daytona has banked corners, at silverstone is where Barry hit the bike on the track as he came over the crest, 2 separate incidents.
OK. So what did the "post mortum" reveal about the motorcycle ? The guy says the back wheel was the prob, but careful look clearly shows an object flying out from under the engine @ 2:13 . ???
John Surtees is the only man to be world champion on 2 wheel and 4. I was also lucky enough to meet the lovely Barry and have picture of me sitting on his knee - and I wasn't a child - I was 25. Sad sad loss he was brilliant
AS young men we followed barry all over england and met him lots of times in the circuit bars and what a lovely lad he was.we had a great laugh with him and its such ashame he died.....
Yea I know in his case it kinda silly how he lost it to a disease after all he's been through :( . he was literally battered but he still kept racing and smiling :P . Much respect Barry r.i.p .
To be honest I had to do some research on him . I only know so much history for me :( . But good call, another brave and fearless racer in an accident unrelated to the dangerous sport they were in.
jeez it's a small world. I am also an open wheel fan and I know about Henry...I saw the accident. Very tragic and unfortunate. I never knew his father was a two wheel racer as well thanks : D .
Those old mad strokers were not as handy ridden as todays stuff, poor handling, vicious powerbands and deadly acceleration, crap tyres and brakes, the golden age of racing, them boys deffo had the balls, its alot easier nowadays and speeds have not really increased a great deal.
I've never really been into racing and stuff but I remember Barry sheene from when I was a kid and even at the age of about six I had nothing but respect for the balls of the bloke!
A pure motorcycling ICON! Besides the great save at 4:55, check out the reaction time in his attempt to save the bike at Daytona (2:14). A brilliant racer we lost to cancer....when will we find a cure?
great bloke and proud to say I met him shook his hand and got his autograph a great loss . odd Sheen and McCray after all they went through and to be lost way far to early and in something unrelated to what they did
Couldn't have said it any beter,I met him too when I was 6 years old in 1979 before that accident, an icon and willl always be remembered by our generation, sad loss;-(
Barry was a legend, I was a member of the first aid team at Donington, Silverstone and Mallory. He was great, I can't believe after all the risks he Embraced.....cancer got him... Not Fair
Even today, when I think about all things motorcycle, two names jump immediately to mind: Barry Sheene & Eddie Kidd. Two men immortalised by their deeds.
Barry rode a Yamaha for a while after leaving Suzuki, the crash at Silverstone was during that period. Barry did race trucks for a while and he also did a season in the British touring car championship as well as commentary for channel 9 & 10 in Australia
This crash was at daytona, and if u look at the slow motion; the bikes blue and white and says suzuki, hope i'm not hallucinating again, have a look tell me what u think?
The first crash is at Daytona on a susuki the second is at Silverstone (still pics of his bike) where he was riding a Yamaha. If you had bothered to pay attention you would have noticed that the commentator says "just 3 weeks and 2 days after his horrendous crash at SILVERSTONE"
I'm from NZ but used to get the Channel9 GP coverage. Barry was great and hilarious, often having trouble with the Japanese riders names who would then be referred to as "that geezer" . Sadly missed
I remember watching the Daytona 75 documentary when it was first shown,it made me want to buy a motorcycle and I been riding for the last 31 years,Sheene was an Icon to all us young 70's lads

And we should not forget the great Mike Hailwood, who raced on both two and four wheels. He lost his life in an uneccessary road traffic accident.

Fair comment. Hailwood raced at the same time as John Surtees. JT`s son,Henry was killed in a Formular 2 race a couple of months ago.

You`re welcome. John Surtees also raced GP Formula one. [4 wheels] I think he raced for Team Lotus and was a World Champion. [early 1960`s]
