@boxxology2011 - Deregulation does work. Enron was not caught by governments, they were caught by . The banking disaster was caused by regulation - not a lack of it. Irradiation of food would do far more to keep food safe than any rule, but it's prevented... by government regulation.
And yes, we would be safer without speed limits. We are less safe because of traffic laws and traffic lights, because they stop people thinking. Speed limits are arbitrary, and are a tool for local revenue.

@abrnt1 - Wow, did you buy a bill of goods. And deregulation didn't cause foreclosures. Government mandated lending did that. Government involvement caused the problem you decry, and it always hurts the economy. Foreclosures happen every time government gets involved in forcing lenders to lend.

As for deregulation look at what happened with the banking industry and stock market. Massive increase in corporate crime and, in order to bail out the banks, the taxpayers lost almost a trillion.

It was cheaper employment that drove companies overseas. Most companies left in the 1980's during which time corporate taxes were heavily cut by the Regan Administration and most unions were busted. Even though taxes and real employment costs in the US have gone markedly since the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, and are similar to the 1980's the US is loosing jobs. Why? Because, Americans wont work for 50 cents per day. Companies will always go to where there is cheap labor.

If a product is made by two companies, 1 in MN and one in Mexico for example, the MN company has to be priced competitively with Mexico. Gov. Dayton wants to make MN the most expensive place, up from #3, to do business. Every company here will have to decide, close or move. Like Polaris did to Mexico.

By raising taxes to the point the US is #2 behind Japan and then putting State corp. taxes on top of it you make it almost impossible to produce a product in the US. You can call corporate survival a choice. It's the same choice you make every time you don't step in front of a speeding car. It's one of survival. Taxes are not linear. By increasing them to far, you drive tha payers away and get less. Tax and spend does not work.

To do busines in the U.S., we should require that all FOREIGN companies have a DOMESTIC office in the U.S., tax them as any other U.S. company, and that they be treated as any other AMERICAN corporation: and penalize them if they are found to use slave or child labor!

@boxxology2011 - Deregulation does work. Enron was not caught by governments, they were caught by . The banking disaster was caused by regulation - not a lack of it. Irradiation of food would do far more to keep food safe than any rule, but it's prevented... by government regulation.
And yes, we would be safer without speed limits. We are less safe because of traffic laws and traffic lights, because they stop people thinking. Speed limits are arbitrary, and are a tool for local revenue.

Free trade is a very good thing for the economy, yes its sends jobs to other countries, but it creates more jobs here. We do have bad government, and Obama is the pinnacle of bad government, pushing it to do things it should not, and making us less free.

@abrnt1 - Wow, did you buy a bill of goods. And deregulation didn't cause foreclosures. Government mandated lending did that. Government involvement caused the problem you decry, and it always hurts the economy. Foreclosures happen every time government gets involved in forcing lenders to lend.
Obama is not our worst President, but only because LBJ and FDR set the bar so high. Obama has increased the size of the federal government exponentially, Bush was wasn't good, Obama is far, far worse.

Outsourcing makes the products we buy cheaper. My laptop costs less than my VCR did 20 years ago - and that's without factoring in inflation.
Since 1992, we've lost 391 million jobs. And gained 411 million jobs.
A study by Dartmouth Univ. found that companies that sent jobs overseas hire twice as many people here.

@mpc91 I've seen the companies who sent jobs overseas close their factories here leaving numerous people unemployed. The so-called jobs being created in place of the lost ones pay a fraction of the wages lost. Factory workers now have to work fast food. that's not a great trade off by any definition.
As for deregulation look at what happened with the banking industry and stock market. Massive increase in corporate crime and, in order to bail out the banks, the taxpayers lost almost a trillion.

The banks went because of a regulation called the community reinvestment act (Carter 77 rev Clinton 95) giving SUBPRIME LOANS (meltdown ringa bell?) to those who could not pay them back. Defended tooth and nail by Frank D Mass and Dodd D CT plus virtually everyone with a D behind em. The derivitives were bundling those loans as GMS's and sold like bonds. Fannie and Freddie, run by dems. you have none of your facts right. Absolutely none.

They then bundled the mortgages together and sold them to banks all over the planet called Guaranteed Motgage Securities. When the housing bubble popped, there were not enough tax payer dollars to cover it and down went not just our economy, but those every where else with us. Not from deregulation

It was cheaper employment that drove companies overseas. Most companies left in the 1980's during which time corporate taxes were heavily cut by the Regan Administration and most unions were busted. Even though taxes and real employment costs in the US have gone markedly since the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, and are similar to the 1980's the US is loosing jobs. Why? Because, Americans wont work for 50 cents per day. Companies will always go to where there is cheap labor.

@ThePhnxman1 Absolutely wrong and here's why. Taxes are not really paid by corporations. They are passed down to you and I in what we pay for a product. Competition drives the end price. If a product is made by two companies, 1 in MN and one in Mexico for example, the MN company has to be priced competitively with Mexico. Gov. Dayton wants to make MN the most expensive place, up from #3, to do business. Every company here will have to decide, close or move. Like Polaris did to Mexico.

Any DOMESTIC corporation that wants to outsource should be liable to the same laws and conditions, and TAXED at the same rate they would be if they were here.

For every job that's sent overseas, a better job is usually created in the US by the same company that outsourced the old one. It's just not as easy to show the new job on the TV news as it is to cover a plant closing.
Shouldn't we be trying to get companies to want to relocate here, voluntarily. You can't force them to stay, they'll just leave altogether. They have that right.

Companies like Sprint, for example, have outsourced thousands of jobs overseas and to the Phillipins. Name me ONE job that they have begun here in the States, after they outsourced: sans qualified personnel and the technology eslewhere.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20 of the 30 fastest growing occupations in the US require highly skilled workers that pay more.

By raising taxes to the point the US is #2 behind Japan and then putting State corp. taxes on top of it you make it almost impossible to produce a product in the US. You can call corporate survival a choice. It's the same choice you make every time you don't step in front of a speeding car. It's one of survival. Taxes are not linear. By increasing them to far, you drive tha payers away and get less. Tax and spend does not work.

@abrnt1 - Everythign fishinwflies said is dead on. But the other thing is that its easy to report a factory closing, but nobody ever reports on the business that opens up. Creative destruction is a natrual part of the economy. We don't have milkmen anymore, but they found other things to do.
And sure, some of the factory workers may have gotten jobs paying less, but some got jobs that pay more, and do so in better working conditions.
