  • anyone who says the 400 was the best ford engine dont know there ass from a hole in the ground. that was one piece of dogshit and to top that off, the 1980 was a F-150, thats over 30 years ago.

  • That truck would have been called an F200 its just about 15 years ago ford started calling their trucks F150,F250 ETC.

  • @TroyM4x4 they started along time ago with the f150 and 250 before that it was just f1 or f2 and in the 70's the trucks came with different packages and they were listed as f200 and different numbers on the tag like i got a dealor tag for a 79 f250 that list it as a 1979 f253, its a camper special, it was before the packages like laiet and explorer really set in i belive. and yess this is in america AMERICAN MADE BABY!!!!!

  • I have had the 351M, the 400 and the 460 in the same 4x4 truck. The 460 drank more gas but performed much better. You can also convert it into a 429CJ. Just giving some advice.

  • I run a 351 M in my '79 on 38s. the 351Ms may not be the greatest motors Ford has ever made but they are by no means "piles" . Im up in the 225,XXX mile range. This truck has been workd HARD on our farm since '84 and its reliable as hell! Been hung up once a long time ago bc of the drop hitch haha. I can't even remember the last time it hasn't started/ran well for me.

  • YA know everyone said the 351 M was a junk motor but I had one and it had plenty of power and I beat the shit out of it and hell it still ran good at a 119,000. miles when I sold it , now my 76 4x4 stepside has a 390 out of a 67 mustang fastback GT it really runs and has almost too much torque with the T18 and 4:10 gears but the only thing it breaks is u joints in the driveshaft.

  • ford 400 is the best sport engine there is. Nothing packs as much HP and Tork in such a light weight engine, the 4 inch long stroke and that 65lb fly wheel makes this engine pull like a train, more power then you will need in a weekend warrior fun truck, nice sounding too.

    also for me 70 model ford trucks are the best looking trucks to this day.

    i like the round features as apposed to the chevy look that is all squares and box type design.

  • @opossom1968 i wouldnt go as far as to say the best engine there is, but it works just fine. And with 44 inch tires you can never have enough power.

  • i have a 1979 f150 with the 351m which is the same motor and it is the best motor i've seen. one winter the radiator froze up and it over heated and oil and antifreeze was puking out the headgasket and that was about 30,000 miles ago and the motor has never been touched and it still runs perfect and will start 20 below without being plugged in. at 156,000 miles it still has balls it pulled a 3020 john deere tractor which is about 8500 pounds with no problem. lets see a chevy fix its head gasket

If you could please explain WHY and LOGICALLY it is the worst motor, I am all ears. I ran a 400 in my old ford years ago, great motor, and they will take a beating. I run all 390's now which are great, but there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the 400 that ford built.

  • Dude, don't let all these haters bug ya. They're just jealous. Too many people think you have to have a big cube engine to make power. I have a 400m in my '77 4x4 and I love it. I also have a 390 FE in my '76 2 wheel drive and it smokes most everything on the roads. If people used their smarts, they would know you can make HP out of anything if you know what you're doing.

  • the only thing wrong with a 400 or 351M is that the cranks were originally milled backwards so they broke when they got twisted hard. a scat crank and some H beam rods with some dome top pistons and a little head work and a 400 can be nasty. I promise..

  • For the love of God, stop calling it a 400m. It's just a 400, the 351M (destroked 400) is the only thing with an M on it.

    Nice rig. Alot of 400 haters out there. Stock, there not super great, but not much from this era is. Just so you 460 fanatics know, it only came with 225hp/375ftlbs from the factory in these trucks. Not all that impressive. Anything can be built though, and factory shortcomings can be ironed out of every engine.

  • My 400 has over 160,000 miles on it and has been pulling around a 78 f150 on 35's with a 6in. suspension and 3in. body for over 30 years. I would say that motor is pretty damn good

  • If emission standards destroyed the engine it was because Ford let it happen just like all of the big 3 did during that time period. It's called engineering and they didn't need to turn the engines into a piece of garbage because of it. Maybe you should check on your history and learn a little of what they did to meet the emission standards.

  • Allright for all those defending the 400M and calling me stupid and everything else I would like to know how many of you that are doing so are running a STOCK 400M. Now it may not be the worst engine Ford put in an F-series, the 351M was a piece a crap also. Any engine can be turned into something good so stock the M series were junk, modified you can turn it into anything you want.

  • @darnucks Technically its a 400 not a 400m, only 351m's had the m designation. As far as being a crap motor, an educated person might think so. However, with very little modification they can be made to snort. Three things kill power in stock form on these motors, compression ratio, cam timing and intake/carb. The heads are basically 2V Cleveland's.  Good cam + hi comp 351C pistons with the w. pins sized down, intake/carb and a few other things and u got 400hp plus

  • @darnucks and as far as the big block argument, 4x4 F-series from 73-79 never came with a factory 429/460 only 2wd trucks did. So for the extra cost of swapping in a big block you could put that money into machine work and parts and make a 400 stomp a mainly stock big block. If you have an extra 1500-2000 dollars to build up a big block and do a swap, then more cubes = more power but don't knock a motor just cause it doesn't make 400hp in stock form, neither does a 460!

  • @darnucks my stock 400 w/ 149,000 miles, and three idiot previous owners running the shit out of it, the bearings are bad in the bottom end, and it still smokes my buddies truck, with a healthy 350. there have been people that have built these with the money to be very powerful/ reliable motors. and a friend has a 400 with close to 10.5:1 compression (factory) that twists drivelines without hesitation

  • Kmon guys, ANY Bblk V8 will do the job, as long as you can do it up and treat it right... Hell, I had a v6 4.0 from my explorer that was done up, It could take on a 351m, with all due respects. It held up fine, Just didn't turn 44's to well.

  • theres alot of parts now for the 400m! there was a build up of a 400m in a magizine and it made over 500hp! it can be made to be nasty if you wanna spend the money just like anything. if you can make a honda have 500hp you can make a 400m have it too!

  • 400 is a funny motor its the only motor ford made that decade that has a different firing order, mine has been reliable 90 mph droped into second gear and it held but it doesnt make much hp, i would suggest 460,390, or straight 300

I have a FI 333 in my 79 and it puts out really good made 493 HP on engine dyno and the turbos still not in..... NICE TRUCK TROYM4X4 hope to see you up at stave!

  • I had a 351M in my '86.. Never had any troubles with it. Powerful and reliable.. Sounded almost identical to this truck. Nice ride dude.

  • The 400m was the worst engine that Ford ever put in the F-series. Way underpowered and unreliable. Much better to have a 429 or 460 .

  • @TroyM4x4 You might be lucky then. I know for a fact the M series engines were considered not very good. My father also had a 400M in his 78 F-250 which he use hard both wheeling and carrying a camper, and construction supplies. He went through 4 of them in 10 years and that was with constant maintenance.

  • hey, i got a couple question for ya, but first love the truck, i got myself a 79 bronco. 1. being that you have a 400 in there is there a rib/fin on the block next to the distributer, i ask cause i need to know if the motor in my truck is a 400 or 351m. and 2. when will it be at stave again.

  • to answer questions: it had about 17 inches of lift, way too much.

    if you plan on just a mud truck then go for a high angle shaft. if you plan to use it for other stuff then go for a doubler

  • first question is when are you taking that truck up there again? second quistion, i have a 84 chevy on 44 boggers with a bout 12" lift, front drive shaft angle is really steep... not sure how much longer it will last. would you recomend the dual t case setup like your truck has? or get a built high angle driveline shaft.
