I'm set on my course to be a barrister (lawyer to our US friends but with a nice Wig) and I'm not sure if this clip makes me terribly nervous or fills me with absolute awe ! Probably the latter !!
To this day, not "Homicide", "The Wire" or any other movie or TV show filmed in or about Baltimore has had a greater moment in cinema than this treasure by the master, Al Pacino! Bravo! Better than "Sunday" or "Scent of A Woman". When are you going to become a lawyer? Today was that day for Al's character, Arthur Kirkland. A Lawyer, at last. Mr. John Forsythe, R.I.P, "Charlie" (Angels). You too had a great career.
"you're supposed to stand for something, you're supposed to protect people, but instead you fuck and murder them" oh man every time i see this part i just get choked up... Mr Alfredo Pacino, the day you leave this earth, it will be a very very sad day... I don't even wanna think about that..
Amazing how he's remained the best for decades, I'd give him the edge over De Niro and Nicholson, on par with Brando, except Al made better career choices, as far as role selection, and didn't grow to view his profession with disdain, as Brando did.
According to Stanley Yalkowsky's book "The Corrupt New York City Judge" the buying of judgeship was VERY common in New York's courts. But here's the thing. According to the Court of the Judiciary there was no such thing as a corrupt judge in the New York City state courts. None. Zip.
I love how it looks like they filmed this scene in an actual NYC courtroom. It doesn't look like those all cherry wood and statues fake ones you see on Boston Legal and Law and Order and such.
"you wanna make a deal? i got insane judge who likes to beat the shit outta women!whattya want to give me frank? three weeks probation?" badass opening statement!!! lol
So many times in this clip he looks like Sly Stallone. The two should be in a movie together as brothers. And if Victor Mature was alive he'd complete the family.
@MARILYN19481 Yeah they still cannot be used today even though with the administering of certain drugs, the accuracy rises to like 99.9% and would be thus hard to fool. So I think in rape & murder trials I think the drugs should be given and the jury should hear the outcomes.
@rlkm93 yeah, but if they were to give oscars, then pacino should have at least 10-15 by now, really. but they have to give them also to other actors as well
He is in tears because he knows he is throwing away his legal career to get at the judge and the flawed twisted legal system that regularly lets powerful people off the hook and has been doing so since it began.
can't stop watching this. is it just me, or do clips like this make people feel....something so much more than when watching a clip tagged "hilarious" etc. granted, they are completely incomparable (lol) but watching a scene like this (and so many others from pacino/de niro) make me feel infinitely "better" than, say, a video of people falling over. duno. anyone?
THIS SCENE IS SO FUCKING AWESOME! LOL! Yeah, send that bitch to jail, ugly old bastard! I love Al Pacino and all his movies. I liked him in, "Serpico," too. He always plays characters who find injustice in the systems they are serving. MAN, THAT SHIT WAS AWESOME!!!
I think this film resonates with alot of people because it is so true. What justice is there in a land where you can be sent to jail for not following someone else's morals, erstwhile, you can be let free for rape or murder easily, esp. if you have the right money. As one client put it, "The criminal justice system is for the criminals, not for the victims." We all see that too often in cases of rape and murder where, in murder cases, the more money you have, you can get off.
But the think i couldn't fail to notice is that the only place he truly excels at are his speeches. There right there in line with the braveheard speech.
should go right to fucking jail" - god i love his acting ,u will never see so much passion in actors this days,he is amazing my fav actor of all time, seen all movies with him
...my only BEEF with Pacino is he normally curses like a sailor....but He is a great actor "Scent of A women prob. His best Performance....Whooo-Aghh...
Pacino is somethin fuckin else... I'm tellin ya! He is tha fuckin man. I always used to think he sucked as an actor but now I have totally changed my mind...
My favorite Pacino flick and my favorite Pacino speech by far. I can quote it word for word, I have seen this maybe 30-40 times. As soon as I hear "she's not lying" with the tear coming down his cheek I am ready to jump the guy. You rock AL, always have and you always will.
"My client... the honorable Henry T. Flemming... should go RIGHT TO FUCKIN' JAIL! THE SON OF A BITCH IS GUILTY!" i get chills whenever i hear that. but my favorite scene in this movie was the scene where you find out that Aggie hanged himself. pacino kicks ass!
I broke into tears at the last bit when he screamed, "You...you son of a bitch, you...you are supposed to save or something, you are supposed to protect people, but instead you are fucking murdering them!"
I'm saying that because he had a baby face up until he was in his early 30s, when his faced finally chisled out, he looked like he aged a lot, just like Dustin Hoffman.
This movie never, ever gets old. After seeing this, Al Pacino became one of my favorite actors. He was so believable as a tormented lawyer that I really got sucked in.
does anybody of u know where i can download this movie from? in english of course, i tried to download it from ares but the only one i found was in spanish....i hope u can help me
this was his 5th nomination just in the 1970s. (Godfathers I and II, Serpico, and Dog Day afternoon.) somehow, he lost everytime and didn't win until Scent Of A Woman, his most caricatured performance. Personally, I think either voters were all jealous of his talent or were so coked up they wouldn't know good performances if they jumped up and pit them. Granted, Nicholson deserved to win in '75, but the rest were unforgivable.
NIcholson should have won in 74 for the last detail, Hackman should have won in 75 for the Conversation, Pacino should have won in 76 for DDA, and Sellers in 80.
Justice for all. I'm thinking Phoenix Wright here.

@CEOTerminator
Well, as the law is an adversarial system, it needs to have a winner.
I see your point, but a Lawyer HAS to believe in his client and represent him to ensure there is a fair and just system.
You could equally say the same about the CPS or a DA that relentlessly prosecutes people that are innocent.
