Also we need a good dreamweaver like software !! come on people with all those distros you are missing the most important part of the operating system which is the Applications !
@tipau Well the speed issue with windows is due to fragmentation of the hard drive. Updates and files gets stored at different places of the hard drive even tough it appears as a single file. You can't blame windows for this problem because all systems, unless it has an algorythm to solve the problem, have the same problem. Tough it only takes a little while with a defragmentation tool to speed up the system again.
But don't get me wrong, I love ubuntu and love to run it on my comp :)
Removing classic menu (and introducing stupid and slow Unity which IS PAINFULLY SLOW on my good old P4 from 2004 year) from Ubuntu to me isn't a positive thing at all. I will still be on 11.04 - to me it's the best Ubuntu version ever (and yeah BECAUSE OF classic menu!)
I wish their would be some great new applications available more often from the software centre. The quality is so low. And Libre Office is beyond outdated, and is barely compatible with Office 2010. I cannot use Libre Office for my college work, no way.
@windowspczone I use Libre Office for college work. Just don't tell the them because they have no idea what you are talking about. They only know the mainstream stuff. Just save it in their format. And you can also update Libre Office.
@tdurb98 Ha I don't need to tell them as I use Microsoft Office for my work currently. Yeah saving it in their format doesn't work. Say If I'm at College using Powerpoint to create a SmartArt graphic... I go home, try opening it in Libre Office and it doesn't display any where near how it should be, thus leaving me to wait until I can use a machine with Microsoft Office on it. I firmly believe it's barely compatible.
@tdurb98 I couldn't risk producing a Presentation in Libre Office, to then try and open it at College and it not open correctly or display properly. It would make it look a mess. And this is even when I save it in the Microsoft Office format. The 2 don't work together, and considering Microsoft Office's high marketshare, Libre Office needs to work around the issue instead of Microsoft working around Libre Office.
I understand LibreOffice, because developers must reengineer MSOffice format, but I can't understand why the same problem I constantly get with different Microsoft Office versions. I make a presentation in PowerPoint2003, open with PP2010 and I get a MESS. I paid for both versions, but I still get a MESS. Especially with diagrams. And the other strange thing is that I never had similar problems with different OpenOffice versions.
@water4fuelh20 A lot change with app. Blender will seem to be hard if you try to cut corners. instead, go to their main page, scroll at the bottom of the page, click on Tutorials, which is under Tutorials & Help. Start from there, and everything about the software use will be clear. If you plan on doing video editing with Blender instead of 3d or games, try metalx1000 here on Youtube. They are excellent. Anyway, beginners should start at the beginning. Check the page I told you about.
@water4fuelh20 Come on! lol Asking for Blender to be simply because of newbies is like asking for After Effects to be simply to the point of Windows Movie Maker, or PhotoShop into MS Paint. It is meant for professional works. There is a clear difference between simplification and improvement. Blender need improvement not simplification. "Learn it to use it my friend". And as for Unity, productivity wise it is slow. You got to go to many loops just to be able to find and access a simple app.
Ubuntu as a desktop will never be successful. It's a nightmare for 3rd party vendors to support. Imagine this, you have to call a company for support for a Linux software. Can you imagine the questions.. what version are you running? Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Redhat, puppy linux etc, then what version of those programs are you running etc etc Then they would have to be trained for all those versions to give a correct answer to your problem. It's a nightmare.
@shawnpatrick9111 then why you are commenting this? - If you dislike open-source then STFU and stay on closed-source which has a lot of attacks from MALWARE
@water4fuelh20 Anyway, whatever MS choose to do with their Windows 8 wont and can't affect me in anyway. Software compatibility is the only reason some of us still dual booting with Windows. And there are alternatives for that. We can always support the alternatives softwares by sending feedback or our own codes. That's what make FOSS so awesome. Right now, the Linux community need more professionals grade cross-platform applications, like Blender for example.
@water4fuelh20 It's up to the customers if they want to buy locked hardware. Apple make expensive locked hardware, and yet they are selling like crazy. If vendors doesn't sell more Ubuntu certified hardware, it is because of us, the hardware buyers. They can't sell the them if we wont buy them.
@alexthehaitian agree 100 percent. Linux users complain like crazy about propitiatory software but yet if they make it open source, they change and hack it like crazy. ubuntu can never be successful on the desktop or netbook market until there is one main version of it AND they can sell and make a profit off software. Just look at all the linux programs that are half finished or abandoned EXACTLY for this reason.
Although this does look good, attractive, and stable, I'd really prefer to wait for the next LTS release. 2 reasons. It will be supported longer. It should be more stable. Also, I still think there are too many clicks to 'find' applications. I have a feeling my launcher is going to overflow.
Looking forward to the final release. I don't want to take any risks of making my one and only system unstable. I might have a sneak peek of it in VirtualBox, though. :P
Is it possible to customize Gnome Shell?
Like, add widgets made for Gnome 2.x? Or are they officially obsolete in Ocelot?
@Linux4UnMe Of course it's available for other distros. It is open source. So there no way to stop others from using it. The fact remain, you see Unity, you'll think of Ubuntu. They introduced it.

I wish to go back to Ubuntu every day, but Unity still doesn't work for me and Gnome3 is even worst. Can someone tell me why I would prefer to use this over Windows?
deihmos 5 months ago
@deihmos 1.Everything is free
2.It's safer - almost all viruses are written for windows
3.Windows loses speed & performance quickly over time, until it becomes a nightmare to use and has to be reloaded. Ubuntu doesn't
4.It has more frequent updates (stable release every 6 months)
5.More helpful community
6.Far more customisable for the individual user
There are more but I've run out of space:) If you're interested it's worth trying it out with a dual boot alongside windows - it's free after all
