  • can you rest you hand on the screen without interfering with the pens input, if not, can you disable finger touch for when you might be drawing?

  • @Vanhhline You can set pen only, yes.

  • then how do you reinstall windows?!

  • @Ykhavari There is a restore partition and software. Or you can get an external USB CD-ROM drive.

  • is this made from taiwan? i mean i know asus is a taiwanese company but is it made from there? if not where was it made?

  • @dance8294lynn No, it was made in China, likely FoxConn, due to the panel used. But that's just a guess. China for sure though.

  • thank you for the review! you did an awesome, clear and honest review! keep it up!

  • Do you know a similar tablet for windows 7 but where the tablet can stack onto the keyboard dock? Cuz the keyboard and tablet as seperation kinda fill some space

  • @Ferzurio None yet.

  • i like how everyone says it has a big screen i want something bigger than paper

  • does art rage studio come with it free?

  • Does this have a slot for mic?

  • Very..very decent review, thanks.

  • I'm wondering...I am a digital artist...I tried using the le1600. It ran too warm for my taste (with my hand resting on the screen while drawing). How warm or does the slate get warm at all while working on it for long periods of time? Can you put this on your lap while you work or is it preferred to place it on a table top? Do you think it overheats? thanks again.

  • @avedelamedianoche It will get warm. But it doesn't "overheat" or anything. It's not unbearable and the case helps with that as well. Lap is likely fine.

  • Wonderful wonderful wonderful review. It was a good length, very in depth, quite articulate, and the explanations were priceless. This is almost as good as if I had the asus in my own hands. Believe me, a baby like this would make my work life so much easier. Thank you for taking the time to go through this. Greatly appreciated.

  • can you use programs of adobe on this thing?

  • @lmmg9 Of course.

  • @mistermarcusgmail how much does it hold? like running several programs? im considering this product for graphic design because of it's ram

  • @lmmg9 Answered @2:10

  • how much weight?

  • @jewel31781 Not sure exactly. A couple of pounds to be sure. I'm guessing 4-5. I'd have to view ASUS specs on their site.

  • also does this digitizer pen support math equations? like if i handwrite fractions and stuff like that will it work?

  • @shatteredgear It won't auto calculate if that's what you mean. I think OneNote has such a feature though.

  • @mistermarcusgmail nah i just mean if i do a fraction if it will display it properly :P or if i do something to the power of 2 for example or square something

  • @shatteredgear Long as you have a steady hand, yes.

  • awesome review you went more in depth than anyone else on youtube, you should keep this up! you sir just earned a sub!

  • This literally weights twice as heavy as an iPad 2. This is one of the first of its kind that uses Windows with conventional laptop hardware in tablet form. I would wait like 5 years for this technology to mature. Let them work out the bugs, weight, price, specs, etc.

Anyone else notice the optical illusion at 26:40?

  • i think the small port you dont know what it is might be a mic? not sure but just a thought

  • the asus ep121 costs 1250,00 euro's in europ + costs for sending. thats 1746 dollars? fair, NOT!

  • Nice review, too bad the price is too high for me. Do you have any review about hp slate 500? I think it much cheeper. This would be really nice if i could watch the review form you! ;-)

  • @HuggytheHusky The HP Slate 500 is $800 and has only an Atom processor and 1GB of RAM. At its current spec it's worth MAYBE $400 at the most. Totally overpriced. I'll not be buying that device until they cut its price at least in half.

  • @mistermarcusgmail thanks

  • Marcus they actually have one that comes with window 7 professional - asus eee b121

  • This slate is brilliant. I have been looking for a pc tablet that runs window.

The reason why I needed window because I need to calibrate my screen with eye-one, run photoshop or lightroom for my photography work. I need to get an instant view of my image by connecting my camera to the tablet.

I do not like apple because of their human rights violation to the Chinese factory workers(Foxconn) =/. I was crazy about Macbook Air until I find out their news.

  • Sorry to the gentleman with that last comment. But....

If there's one thing I hate it's "reviews" with no talking. They obviously tell you nothing. If that's what you prefer, there are plenty of those out there.

    OR

Wenn es eine Sache, die ich hasse es "Bewertungen" ohne zu sprechen. Offensichtlich sagen Sie nichts. Wenn das, was Sie bevorzugen, es gibt viele von denen da draußen.

    Just sayin.

  • That was a great review! I am a college student and I was looking for a tablet that i could write notes and do some computing. Your video has helped me make up my mind.

  • Nifty!

  • Great review, thanks!

  • Got dammit I cant wait until mine fucking arrive!!!! Grrrh

  • Hello. Thank you for the review! Does MS Office with OneNote come with this slate or is it a separate purchase?

  • @MatthewMatician If I recall, it comes only with the starter Word and Excel. I believe you'd have to get one of the full non-starter versions of Office to have OneNote. Since I'm a TechNet subscriber I just used it from there.

  • @mistermarcusgmail Check out asus eee slate b121 which comes with window professional, I don't know if that comes out after you bought the EP121

  • @MatthewMatician Hi, it doesn't come with microsofts OneNote, but it comes with Windows Journal. It is a simple tool but it showed to be very good for taking notes in auditions.

I don't use a pencil since I got this device.

  • why is it that on amazon the 64gb model cost less then the 32gb ?

  • @S69NER Unknown.

  • Very nice review, I was wondering about the input, you mentioned being able to use the fingers by setting the device to accept capacitive input, is this device very good when using the Wacom Digitizer only and using it as a Artistic Tool. I usually draw with my hand on the piece of paper and as such it would be normal for me to have my hand on the screen while using the Tablet to Draw on... is this possible or would I get weird hand marks on it while drawing? Seeking confirmation!

  • @eanhl2004 You can disable the normal capacitive and use just the digitizer. Or you can use just your fingers. Or you can turn both on.

  • Why is the inclusion of the disc ignorant? Personally, if I got one, I would like to upgrade the drive to something in the range of 128 GB, and the only way to put the OS back on would be with either an external drive or a disc image on a flash drive (which can be created with the disc). I think it would be ignorant to *not* include some sort of restore media.

  • @paniconenvy As clearly explained in the video, it is ignorant to include disc-based restore media when said hardware does not have a disc drive. A smarter choice would have been a pre-installed restore partition or a USB flash drive - things the device could actually USE without spending more money.

  • @mistermarcusgmail Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were saying that they shouldn't have included restore media. I agree that a usb drive with the image on it would be a much more useful form than the disc, but discs are definitely cheaper than the drives. As for the restore partition, I don't think that that would be wise given the small size of the drive to begin with. The 32gb version would be almost entirely filled with just the OS files and the restore files.

  • @paniconenvy Negative. A USB drive costs literally pennies wholesale and is made faster than burning DVDs. They also save on packaging material costs.

  • For you guys worrying about the battery life, there is a external battery pack that you can buy that increases you're device's battery life to 9 - 9 1/2 hours. I went along tablet pc review and I heard about the Xpal xp18000 by Energizer. If you're willing to dish out an extra $189 it's truly worth it in my honest opinion.

  • Thanks, it is the best review saw about the EP121.

  • Thanx for the review now I just need to save up all my pennies :)

  • look at that beautiful screen. its got an IPS panel! if only the battery life was at least 5 hours of UNCOMPROMISED use i would buy this for sure. And also thinner and lighter. wish the digitizer is also thinner, it will make holding the thing more comfortable.

Wish List on the next Eee Slate:

    1) LIGHTER (for eReading purposes)

    2) Longer Battery life ( ARM based CPU?)

    3) Cheaper ( $1200 is still hard to swallow)

  • Great video! I am planning to get this to replace the Wacom Bamboo Fun (1st Gen) and Asus UL50VT that I already use for notetaking together. The two devices make for some bulk in the lecture halls and the ep121 would effectively consolidate the two for me.

I'd like to point out though, the "active digitizer" is actually the technology in the screen! The pen interacts with the digitizer using magnetism which is why it requires no battery. Wacom is brilliant!

  • the little unknown button on the left is an emergency shutdown button

  • include a usb flash with a full versoin of widows asus a 8gb flash dirve is prety cheap when not bought retail

  • would you suggest this for use in college? with the journal app it looks like I wouldnt even need a pen and paper any more. is it wi-fi capable?

  • @wenchkinn full wireless. Perfect for notes.

  • Best review ever.

  • @mistermarcusgmail I think that port u didnt know holds and hides the pc information

  • Thanks to your outstanding review i purchased one!

  • best review so far of the eee slate ep121 :)

    nice job...

  • Will Windows 8 work on this when it comes out?

  • @kiro1990122 Unknown as to the hardware requirements of Windows 8. Though I don't see why not.

  • The little dot that you didn't know what it was is an emergency shutdown button

  • Maybe this was already asked, but does it have a restore partition?

  • @techraan restore disc only from what I see.

  • @Jesusbelly241 no lag due to the processor and solid state.

  • hes a black vince vaugn

  • Thanks for the review. But I really have a question. Is this tablet worth it for me to use to take notes during a lecture in a classroom? I will be using the tablet for mainly this purpose -- is this easily achievable? Thanks!

  • @ShasOJeffrey Long as you realize the battery life isn't the longest.

  • Great review, I just bought one, very, very excited.

  • Hi, thanks for the great review, I just ordered an Asus EP121, I'll receive it next Tuesday and I'm very, very excited.

I see that the pen doesn't have buttons though, do you know if there are other compatible wacom pens with programmable buttons that one can buy?

I normally work on a Cintiq and the pen has two programmable buttons that make it a replacement for a three button mouse (for 3d applications) and if this would be available for the Asus EP121 then it'd be great.

  • @Maxinkuk As long as it's a Penabled digitizer, yes.

  • good review.Any good external batteries?

  • @sean1ers unknown. Don't use them.

  • The best review i have a seen on the Asus Eee tablet PC,

  • excellent, u r d best marcus...great review....no ass kissing, no bullshit, cold hard facts, instant subscribe.....good job

  • I think this is so worth it to me. I am a designer and an artist profession and I was saving for a Cintiq until I cam across to the Asus slate and all the small kinks is just a cherry on top that i can manage to make it work. Your review has been most informative and I thank you.

  • really great review, man. i've been researching tablets all night and this is the best tablet review i've seen so far.

  • Leaves the iPad in the dust

  • Finally you showed me what I wanted to see and that was note taking. Although I have a question which, is should I as a college student invest my money in one of these. To me it would be nice to have all my college notes in one place and fully organized. It also seems nice that you could almost organize your whole semester or what ever. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

  • @gbonesrider You're on the right track. It's a lot of money though. Worth it, but still a lot of money.

  • Is this 2560X1440 capable through the mini HDMI? I am wondering if I can take full advantage of an Apple Cinema display via an HDMI-mini display connector. Can the Intel graphics card handle it, I wonder? What's your best guess?

  • @Tohkeeoh7 resolution is going to depend, but I would be surprised if it couldn't handle it.

  • You, my friend, are the go-to-guy for reviews. Excellent job! I really enjoy the no BS, in your face, nut-n-bolts approach. A great mini tutorial, psuedo application test drive. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Just keep at it and I'll do my best directing folks your way. Take care and be safe.

  • @TheAtlasWept Thanks - much appreciated.

  • Love the down to earth Review!

I have always wanted a tablet that has full Windows 7 capabilities; I have the iPad currently, and as much as I like the device, not being able to find an office app that fully supports everything with MS office has been a let down. Knowing about the digitizer and Art Rage makes me feel comfortable buying it because I do PS and office work a lot and iOS's apps cannot compensate that!

  • how do you think this for reading comic book, I have tone of comic book, but there all in cbr format, and it only works on windows not on android or ipad. I really have no plan to used out door so the bettery life it not big deal for me, just n my bed or the bathroom for reading.

  • @mahender6969 comic books will work fine.

  • Hey, canu just answer a question for me.. how the hell can u use this on the road without wifi i mean my laptop doesn't work everywhere???

  • @epiccrib123 Mobile hotspot.

  • I struggle to watch cnet's 2 minute reviews, and I watched this to the end. Thank you.

  • @wrightaboutit That's because CNet's reviews are designed to put the device over, rather than emphasize its positives and negatives. They don't really USE the device. I feel the same way you do though - Dan Ackerman makes me cringe.

  • @mistermarcusgmail Just thought you'd be interested to know that mine arrived by UPS today. From the Palm to Vaio to OQO to iPad, I have been waiting for a full-powered device that was truly mobile for 15 years. I never bit on anything because they didn't meet my work requirements. Handwriting recognition is amazing, DragonSpeech works great, wifi and cell connectivity, pen, bluetooth, spreadsheets, graphic development. I feel like today I finally got that. Your review helped tip me over. Thanks

  • I was supposed to get mine today in the morning but now i have to wait 1 more week because of product availability!!! i hope they don't push it another week..i've been waiting 2 weeks going on to 3 :( :( :(

  • Looking forward to your review of the Fujitsu Q550.

I may end up getting this one, but solely for an Art Tablet (instead of a Cintiq).

It's nice, but just seems too big to lug around to classes or meetings!

  • DAMN brother.. your good , and straight to the point

  • Excellent review. Keep up good work. I am thinking of buying this for my electronic medical records program which is server based. I currently use fujitsu lifebook with windows 7 and wacom enabled pen. This is lighter compared to it.

  • Hm, intersting. My manual only mentions Aero Flip and CTR-ALT-DEL. This is how mine behaved by default when it arrived in mid-Feb. Maybe there was a change. Also the other videos and reviews only mention AeroFlip, if they mention the button at all. Props for even mentioning it.

  • @pellegew I'll double verify when I get it back from work, but I'm fairly confident when I pressed it, it brought up an Asus window. But I will double verify.

  • @pellegew I stand corrected. I think it is the Hotkey service that controls it. Now it is functioning as you describe. I disabled all of the Asus software when I got used to the tablet. See if the Hotkey software is running in the bottom right corner, and if you can change the setting.

  • @ t= 10:10

I have this tablet. Pushing the front button brings up Windows Aero Flip for selecting windows. This is a standard Windows feature. I don't know what ASUS software or settings the reviewer is talking about?

  • @pellegew Depends what mode you're in. It brings up Aero Flip if you're in standard Windows and you have customized the button to do so. By default, mine brought up the Asus status/settings window. Also depends how long you depress the button, as I believe holding it down does something different than a single press.

  • This is one of the longest best reviews I have seen in a while. Keep up the great work, man! You are very good at explaining things and how it's not a gaming/casual tablet. Great!!!!! What are tablets good for? I have a laptop but I am very interested in the Acer Iconia Tablet but I think it's going to be a waste of my money.

  • @VirginsEyeViewDotCom Tablets, in my humble opinion, are VERY hard to justify over notebooks/netbooks. The fact is that when notebooks were $3,000 and netbooks didn't exist, tablets had an opportunity to take over. Now, you can get fully functional portable computers for good prices. As much as I like the Eee Slate, it hardly gets used over my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

  • Well, considering that Windows will take up 16 GB of the hard disk space, then if you get the 32 GB one you will only have 16 GB left and if you get the 64 GB one you will get 48 GB. Is that enough? I feel that you can't do anything with it.

  • @atheistonly The reality is that the future lies in external storage. Period. The days of massive drives inside of machines are coming to an end. If you need a 500GB drive, get an external enclosure and buy that drive. It's a total of $90, and then you're not stuck with all of your content on a single device.

  • @mistermarcusgmail You are right and most 500gbs are about $60 :), I got mine for that price and connect it to my EP121 Slate... install all my software on that. Barely use the disk space that's on the Slate.

  • @atheistonly actually, windows really takes up 8 GB max.... =.="

  • great review thanks, Ill prolly go with an ipad

  • there are programs out such as alcohol 120% or 52% you can trial from download.com that creates images on your drive and a virtual drive on your pc. What I do is burn my dvds to my main computer, transfer the .iso to my eee Slate, and mount on my virtual drive.

Thanks for this video. I am laughing at your enthusiasm for the stylus. I had no idea there was so much to it, and I am now intending to learn everything I can about differences in styluses.

The eee slate does run games on low.

  • @techspert1701d You don't need alcohol... you can get MagicDisc which is 100% free and you can do the same virtual CD/DVD settings.

  • why dose your wallpaper change at 17:34??????????

  • @1softsniper1 Because Windows 7's default is to rotate the wallpaper every so often.

  • DUDE I AM GETTING THIS~!

  • Can you put a 3g card in it? BTW great video, thanks for sharing

  • @aquaphotoboy I would say no.

  • @mistermarcusgmail I am wondering about how to install software on the Eee Slate from a CD. Can you use the drive on you desktop computer or do you need to use an external drive? Can you just connect it to any computer with a USB cable, and instal that way

Also if you can do this from your desktop will it only save the files to the Eee Slate then put the desk top icons on the computer with the drive? or can you access the cd drive from the Eee Slates screen as if it were an external ?

  • @kylerhockey External USB drive is really the only option, unfortunately. You *might* be able to figure out, in Windows 7, a way to share out the optical drive onto the Slate.

  • Can this be used as a Wacom tablet i.e. hooked upto a PC - in case I need more horsepower?

  • @nikhitnair Negative. You would have to have a dedicated tablet that the other machine would recognize as an input device. This is a full computer and would not be recognized as an input device, rather another computer.

  • the port between the 2 usbs is an emergency shutdown, handy if the touch gives out.

  • I can't wait to have this at college.. My fellow class mates all have this cool little laptops and laughed at me for having pen and paper.. I can't wait to get mine hahahahaha

  • The question is, how do you right click?

  • @henik9 Hold down on the screen for a second or two. Circle will come up. Let go and the menu shows up. Or you can buy the option button Penabled Wacom which lets you use that, much easier.

  • I enjoyed this video so much! This looks like the most amazing tablet pc ever! I don't know why someone would buy a non-tablet pc these days since... well this is out :) I have to know though, will it be easy to add Greek keyboard language support and is Greek handwriting to Greek font recognition available? Does anyone know?

  • @ki8ara Well this is just my guess, but I have Windows Ultimate x64, in the "Windows Updates" under "Optional" they provide a whole selection of language packs and such, I do see "Greek Language Pack - Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB972813)" - 51.5MB. So most likely since this tablet runs Windows 7, you will be able to have Greek support. Just my guess =S

  • GREAT REVIEW! I fully appreciate your effort in eleborating everything and it;s functions and your views on it. You just saved me 1.2k bucks.. thanks man

  • Refreshingly down to earth review which showed some things I didn't know existed with this unit even after watching umpteen other reviews. Since it's a want and not a need for me I'll probably pass, but thanks for the showing.

Just as an FYI, an Asus video claims they are pronounced like AY-SOOS and Wacom is Walk-Om.

  • @unzarjones as I am sure other country residents have their way of pronouncing potato, such is the case with those two names.

  • Thanks for the your great review. I have been looking at tablets for a good year now. Though I am retired I am active with my blog and other business projects. I live in Asia and travel often. Though Android seems promising as a mobile OS I love windows and till now didn't think I'd see a tablet I cared to buy. I use a fairly complete MS Office Suite and just haven't found a substitute that can stand up. Again thanks for the eye opener.

  • Is this true that some of the pixels in the middle of the screen are not functioning how they are supposed to? (I read some where that there is a problem on the screen!) so just wondering if it is true?

Also, do you think 64 gigs is enough??

  • @atheistonly saw no evidence of dead or stuck pixels.

64 gb is fine for a tablet. Any more can easily be accomodated by an external drive using USB. The speed of solid state far outweighs storage capacity in a device such as this.

  • Very very nice and good Review. Thank you sow much my brodah from another mother. I will buy one. I think its a nice device for picture editing

  • 7:42, that probally the reset button, try pressing it with a toothpick and see what it does.

  • @rickschravendeel The reset is part of the power switch. That's actually a microphone.

  • @rickschravendeel LOL, good thing he didn't use a toothpick! :D cause it was a microphone!

  • If you buy the accessories such as the case the price would be equal to OEMs!

  • Love this. Been waiting for this since my R2H

  • Do you think this would be a suitable alternative to a Cintiq for concept art work? Is the pen sensitivity/versatility comparable?

  • @spiralgear in my personal opinion, yes.

  • This is an awesome review, definitely put this machine into consideration for my next device. I lost my old computer and am now looking around. I'm a student and don't play any games. I don't care much about the weight and battery life, but I am a little concerned that you said this is a very businessy device. I'm just mainly gonna be doing heavy browsing, light-mid media consumption, and mid word processing. Do you think this device would be good for me? Thanks so much!

  • @instantkorver yeah, you should be fine with the Asus. Just mentally prepare yourself for a slightly heavy device. But you will probably enjoy it, yes.

  • Great review. Thanks for this. Had a play with this last week for a few days. A very fine Tablet PC.

  • 9:13

It's not glossy but it's not dull.. smooth but not too smooth.

    LOL :)

  • Question: Does the 802.11n in the ASUS EEE slate connect to 802.11n on 5GHz frequency? Thanks in advance.

  • @techieeeify No, 2.4GHz. The only 5GHz devices I've encountered in my travels have been the Apple computers and of course custom built ones. Asus Eee Slate is not 5GHz, only 2.4GHz.

  • Assume the storage iis used by the OS installation? If so, what is available for programs and media?

  • @link5280 Windows 7 and the installed programs will take up roughly 15-20 GB of the space, so you figure about 60GB or so free.

  • Thanks for the reply!

As an artist and student, this sounds perfect for me. I saw a commercial for this online that seemed to market it as a video game and movie device. I thought that was weird. What they really should focus on are the students who will love what this can do over the iPad.

  • This is the best review of this I've seen online. Good job, man.

A few questions. If anyone could answer them, I'd be grateful.

    How hot does it run?

And are the fans loud if you run it for a while? (say 1 or 2 hours)

Does it run Photoshop CS5 fine?

  • @Afryte Heat - not hot at all. Gets a little warm but nothing unbearable. Of course, under heavy load (i.e. 1080p movies) it may get a little warmer.

Fans - I wouldn't say "loud" but you can definitely hear them. Not enough to fill up a room, say.

    Photoshop - yes.

  • Great channel, I just subbed! haha I was just wondering, would you recommend this for a college student (i.e. taking notes with OneNote, etc), if cost isn't an issue?

  • @silverwolf731 Long as you keep your charger handy, absolutely.

  • I have been using this tablet for three weeks now. I love it. However, don't lose the Stylus. Asus does not sell a replacement Stylus.

I just spoke with Asus service and you not re-order one (or several as I would like to do now). Nothing in the Asus estore and no date for when it could be planned. You can't use another model as it won't fit into the Stylus "dock". I was told by service this is a "limited edition" product. That wording worries me more than my lost Stylus.

  • @KalBMac Remember that, as per my other video, ANY Penabled Wacom digitizer will work fine. Buy them from Amazon.

  • @mistermarcusgmail .. I have done exactly that after posting. I just don't know if the one I purchased from Amazon will fit into the internal pen "dock". In response to a review posted in a major Canadian newspaper, I posted a comment where I emphasized that I believe the EP121 is a game changer for consultants, educators, webinar hosts and executives.. You can find it in the comments section in the Globe and Mail Technology section (Asus EP121).

    (comment as KalBMac)

  • @KalBMac Penabled Wacom digitizers will work as long as the one you pick does not have the secondary button. That's the only thing that stops it from fitting cleanly.

  • @mistermarcusgmail Tell us about the HDMI output functions. Are you able to project a second screen or just project the screen that you have on the eee slate. I am wondering what the limitations are compared to an HDMI output on a regular laptop. I would imagine you would need a mouse in order to access the second screen.

  • @kylerhockey No, you can do dual screen setups as with a regular computer, and yes, you would need a mouse to access it. IF you do clone display, then your touch input will affect what's on screen, which is very nifty if you're thinking of like a home media setup or something and want a "cool" remote. Though an overpriced one.

  • Marcus, well done video. I really like your fresh take on this device and the fact you are left-handed like myself. You don't see this type perspective at all with other tablet computer reviews!

  • @digitalmandave What's even more remarkable is how beautiful his handwriting is! He may not be into the arts but is handwriting is more of a drawing than a writing!

I also want to add that even if you're just going to watch videos this Eee Slate might be a better choice than an iPad! Because what the iPad lacks (and what drives me off) is a proper OS.

On OS X or Windows 7 I can just download most any file and play them with VLC.

And battery life? Most people carry the charger with them anyway.

  • Has anybody taken this slate apart yet?

  • @starborn600 might check ifixit.
